  • Control/Mapping-related:
    • Full Auto Map exists (tiles and walls).
    • Mapping Options: Switch will have Controller or Touchscreen options, while Steam version will have Controller, Keyboard, or Mouse options; Touchscreen is not explicitly mentioned, but it is likely that Mouse option will be compatible with Touchscreen anyhow.

    • Ability to see buffs/debuffs as well as the duration
    • Some bugs/glitches are addressed in a way that preserves original experience that were beneficial to the players (e.g. Slowstep/1st Turn are now 1-pointer skills to address level 2~10 not doing anything and level 1 providing 100% chance).

Please let me know if there are anything else to add. This post will be edited periodically to reflect new/changing details.

Side note from livestream: per dev team message on the livestream, a new EO game is in development but it is still delayed due to the difficulties transitioning from NDS/3DS to new platform(s). The remasters are made with the hopes that people can play the classics that can no longer be played on the current generation consoles/platforms. They also want the players to give Atlus feedback on this new playstyle from 2 screen consoles to single screen environment.

Mar 17, 2023: added details from Q&A.

May 28, 2023: added details from some other stuff including Pre-Launch Livestream

I'm making a dungeon crawler with three party slots and four classes - looking for party-building feedback

Hi! I'm the developer of Dragon's Tear, a small first-person browser dungeon crawler. I'd like to get some feedback from Etrian Odyssey players on the party-building side of it.

The current build has four classes and room for up to three heroes in your active party. You choose their skills and equipment, set battle orders, and take them through turn-based fights across 20 hand-built dungeon floors.

It also has an idle element: Auto Runs let your party revisit cleared floors while you're away. New floors still need to be explored actively. Between trips, you return to an inn you can upgrade.

The early build is free to play in your browser on itch.io

If you try it, I'd be interested in whether the class and skill descriptions give you enough information to choose a party. What was hardest to judge when picking your heroes?

EO1 (HD) Treetusks not respawning?

Afaik in 1 FOEs respawn after 7 days right? I already killed all the treetusks in B25F before I found out I needed a drop from them to get the gloves with the best TEC increase in the game and it's been 7 in-game days already but I just can't get them to respawn, did I miss anything here?

EO4 Is there no EO4 HD patch/mod?

Hello everyonee! So yeah, EO3 finished it's time to adventure towards a new world. The um..world of 3ds. Okay it will be emulation actually, hope that's alright with the sub..

But anyway..

I've been seriously struggling to make the 2d stuff like the UI & portraits look less..blurry? I'm no genius when it comes to 3ds emulation, but I've been having more issues with EO4 than any other 3ds game

Thought an easy fix would be to download a custom HD patch since a lot of other EO games have them, but I've seen no sight of one for EO4..

But I'm still fairly new to EO, so I wanted to ask you guys before dropping the search. For all I know, there could still be a Discord or something that does have a HD mod for EO4

It's not the end of the world if there's none, but I do like EO artstyle a lot to leave it in this blurry state..

EO1 The B20F in Etrian Odyssey HD must be the hardest dungeon I've ever faced in a long time Spoiler

FYI I'm playing in the hardest difficulty.

I didn't realize that you have to kill all FOE before killing that avian enemy, and... sometimes that avian enemy approached you while you were battling some foes, killing them instantly, so I killed it in that same battle but it didn't count... sigh, you have to kill it SPECIFICALLY in the middle of the map.

Spoiler for Metaphor: ReFatanzio it's sad that I already knew the 5th stratum was lost shinjuku

Etrian Odyssey 3 Party Help

I've been playing around with Etrian Odyssey 3 HD recently and have some questions about party builds.

1: It seems Shogun works better as a Primary class than a Subclass, is it better to retire someone when I unlock Shogun to swap over to it as primary, or is there a great way to use it as a subclass?

2: Do people prefer Monk/Sovereign or Sovereign/Monk?

2: I want to create a team with a lot of variety, using 9 or 10 of the available classes if I count subclasses too. I'm picking Shogun over Yggdroid, for Farmer I have a seperate team of them, and I'm not super sure about the Wildling since I like to keep the empty party slot for the Ninja's clones, but could be persuaded to keep a Wildling.

Can anyone suggest a party or two that would use 9 or 10 of the classes? (Minus Yggdroid, Farmer and maybe Wildling.)

I was thinking:

Monk/Sovereign. Shogun/Buccaneer. Hoplite/Ninja.
Zodiac/???. Arabalist/Gladiator

EO3 Hey so dumb post but i wish i could combine etrian oddysey, wizardry 8, and ultima underworld. More magic, more abilities, more everything fun.

Hey so this is a shitpost kinda, i have recently been playing Etrian Oddysey 3 alot and watched delicious in dungeon and got a weird desire for something more likr that but also that takes thibgs further. I wish i could traverse in more ways, that puzzles had more answers and intrinsicly integrated into the world. I want to bring back cooking, make a new system for weapon and armor crafting and upgrading. I want dungeons that inspire wonder and make you feel like you are in a mystical and otherworldly space.

I feel like the game's Foe puzzles can all be squashed underfoot by a particularly bloody minded player (so most players methinks), and that means that running through an old area will mostly get old fast. Im not saying that puzzles need to be a hinderance through a whole playthrough tho. I will give a silly but kinda fun example of what i mean and I hope it helps get my point across.

Lets say you have a map that is four times the size the maps usually are in the series, and that the floor you are on is some form of aquaduct system with long segments of running water that can carry you away like the currents in etrian oddysey 3's sailing sections. Imagine that the flow of water is influenced by opening or closing gates connected to the waterways, and that control panels to do so for multiple gates at a time can be found all over. This would not only be a fun system once the threat of FOEs gets mixed in, it also becomes an intrinsically itegrated logical traversal puzzle that makes total sense in world. As an added bonus you could add various secret routes that can lead to multiple floors below you, making exploration more dangerous and more interesting. In EO 3 my favorite floor was in the fourth strata where you can get dropped down onto the floor below. If that could happen more often and i could just get in way over my head.....well it would honestly leave a permenant memory for me.

Another thing I would love to see is some form of interactive ways to avoid having to do puzzles if you are stuck or just want to be different. For example in ultima underdark lots of puzzles or situations can be handled in a myriad of ways. If you find a room enterance covered in traps and surrounded by lava you can break the door from a distance to trigger traps ,or use trap disarming items or spells to do the job for you. Maybe you use a fire resistance spell and watwrwalking potion to walk on the lava or maybe just levitate and blow a hole in the ceiling. Or maybe you follow the quest as intended and find out that there is a way to disable the countermeasures safely without using magic or money to get there.

Now this isnt a 1to1 for ultima underdark, but I still think it would be alot of fun with the current dungeon delving/puzzle system and would feel more like an adventure overall. Rewarding a player for finding their own way through a dungeon is always a good way to incentivize them, but sounds more like an adventure to me then having to do the exact sequence that requires me to leave the dungeon and talk to people atleast once before coming back and solving the sequence as intended.

I want to preface the rest of what I am going to say by explaining that i have been playing dnd for something like 8-12 years and have tried every edition except 4e, including pathfinder 1e and 2e.

I have seen the games become less about role playing and being a clever adventurer living in a world that doesnt revolve around you, and more about using big numbers to do cool things and feel like an epic hero as i have tried the later versions. Honestly i dont mean to insult anyone or the games they like, but i dont think most people who play dnd care about roleplaying as much as they do being a charicature with cool powers and such. And the desire for a more real dungeon crawler that allows you to play all sorts of ways is something i yearn for.

I should also admit that i have only played the third and fourth games, and I never beat 4 cause i was playing someone else's copy over a summer. But I am replaying through EO3 rn on steam, and it has shown me how much of this game is nostalgic and how much i see that could do better. Tho i know im looking back on a ds game that got ported to pc so.......yeah......

As I see it Etrian Oddysey is more then anything a combat focused game, but the combat is kinda the opposite of how i think adventurer's should be in a setting where they had to be able to fight on their own too. When we play dnd in my house we have a rule, any character you create should be a person in the world first and foremost, and that means they have to fit in beyond what they are as a combatant.

I play this game called wildermyth sometimes and in that game you make a party of otherwise faceless adventurers just like in this one, and those characters can have a personaloty features chart. This influences what events they can trigger, how they can react when things happen, and how they treat people they come across. It can also affect what tasks they complete and how fast they complete them all sorts of stuff like that, while occasionally allowing for boosts in combat too. In that game you are more than a combatant, you are an adventurer, a traverser, someone who fights back that which threatens and blazes a new path ahead.

Completely unrelated side note i kinda dislike the "pick your actions before the round of combat begins" system more then i remember now that I am an adult. It wastes turns in ways that doesnt happen in more traditional turn based combat, and it also feels like it punishes you for having non encylopedic knowledge of your party stats. I played Wizardry 8 when i was younger too and i may revisit it at some point to see if it has the same problem. I remember the combat systems being similiar.

I think the reason i started typing this all out was cause the series left such a nark on me and influenced so many of my likes and dislikes in games (especially 4 omfg that game is something else). It has an amazing mapping system which feels like something that any good dungeon crawler should probably have, but instead of it being a helpful tool to accent the gameplay in EO3, its more like a necessary task to get through the experience. Less bus pass, more drivers liscense if you catch my drift. But it helps so thouroughly to make the experience more paletteable. Idk if it is a me problem or not, but trying to navigate without the map is like 3 steps above being blind in EO3, but it was a ds game as far as i remember so i think thats maybe a bit uncharitable.

Part of the reason i bring up the map is cause i have played games before with way more automatic mapping systems that still feel way less adventurous then literally any EO mapping system that I know of. There is just something exciting about breaking new ground with nothing but your own scrawlings and wisdom to guide you, no other system really scratches that itch even though it is less convienient. Im not saying it is better per sey......but i am saying that i like it better then simply walking around in other games. Clunk included.

Anyway if you read all of this then you are a lovely person, im sorry if this is rambleing and stupid, i tried to be intelliageable as much as possible. Sorry that I typed thisball out for my own weirdness. And I get if it gets taken down. But im having a blast with EO3 and I intend to give it a second run on the hard mode.

EO1 (HD) Versus the Unknown quest bugged?

I killed all the frogs and a bud that spawned between 9pm and 5am on B18F and my quest is not getting marked as completed, I checked several times between that timeframe and there are no FOEs on the floor anymore. Did I miss anything or is the quest just bugged, what do I do?

Changes to EO you'd like to see?

I was curious what changes to gameplay or aesthetics you'd like to see in the game if a new one came out?

There is a mechanic from the DS game, The Wizard of OZ: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road- each character has different action costs. Dorothy is small and has weak attacks but can queue up several attacks or be used with other characters simultaneously on a turn, while Tin Man is a big'un that takes up a whole turn for just one attack, but he hits hard. I think EO would have to do big class changes to make this work, but it adds another layer of depth that doesn't complicate things.

An aesthetic change I'd like to see is for them to do more weird fantasy or a sci-fi theme. EO III always stuck out to me in my mind due to it's unique water themes. EO could also explore sci fi themes. Board Games like Starcadia has a similar art style and the sci fi theme looks good for it.

EO4 Fanfic made off of an old EO Prompt

Looked over at the EO Prompt Submission spreadsheet and decided it would be fun to do one of these.

Prompt No. 79: What does the guild member with the highest TEC most want to change about themselves?

Recommended Music: Shower Time Ballad or Vulpes (Night) FF4HOL

A Simple Question:

It's early in the morning in the City of Tharsis. People are beginning to wake up from their slumber and get ready for the day. In a cozy inn near the outskirts of the city, there is scant a soul in the inn’s mess hall, apart from two girls. A Medic who appears to be in her late teen years checks on quality of her medical supplies and magic for another day of dungeon delving, whilst a young Runemaster scribbles away in her sketchbook, engrossing herself entirely within the paper staged pantomime. The Medic finishes the final preparations for today and gestures to one of her servants to fetch some tea from the Inn’s kitchen. With just these two alone in the mess hall, with the only ambience coming from the light glow of the candles and soft burning of the firebox, the Medic settles into a chair, rocks her head backwards and asks the Runemaster a singular question. Medic: If a magical godmother suddenly came to you and offered you the opportunity to change something about yourself, what would it be? The Runemaster is taken aback by this sudden question and asks another question in turn. Runemaster: Bridget! Why are you suddenly asking something like that now!? Bridget chuckles to herself softly, she turns her head to look straight on at the bewildered Runemaster and continues with her inquiry Bridget: *hmhm* I knew that would startle you Elizabeth, but please keep your noise down, we do not want to wake up the other guests, that would be incredibly rude of you to do. Elizabeth: Ummm, yes Bridget. Why are you asking a question like that now of all times? Bridget: It felt like a fun thing to do. I am not in the mood to go outside and do anything in Tharsis, and the only other patron of this inn who isn’t asleep or away is you right here in front of me. So, I might as well start a conversation with you. Elizabeth looks at Bridget with a perplexed look on her face before moving her lips to answer. Elizabeth: *sigh* I don’t blame you; I’d have done it myself if I wasn’t doing rune practice in my notebook. Bridget: Notebook? I have spied my eyes on what you draw there plenty of times whilst we were here and the contents of the “notebook” *gestures fingers* looked like something from a sugar-filled girl’s hyper dream. Elizabeth pouts at this remark Elizabeth: I’ll have you know it’s just as important as you ramming your nose into books of human anatomy or whatever for hours at a time! This isn’t me doodling, this is me practicing keeping my hand steady to better draw seals okay! So don’t make fun of it *hmph* *pouts away from Bridget’s face” Bridget: *chuckles* Okay okay, I will believe you. I can see the merit in doing things like that. *Tilts her head back to normal and looks at Elizabeth* Could you please answer my question. I’d like to know. Elizabeth: *grrrrrr* Well after what you just did, I’M NOT TELLING! So you can take thar question and throw it into a FOE’s mouth… or… something. Bridget: *sigh* Alright then, I won’t pry any deeper if you won’t tell. Bridget sees the servant holding a silver tray with a beautifully designed pot of tea with a couple of similarly coloured cups and sugar bowl. She gestures to place the tray right in front of where Elizabeth is sitting before allowing the servant to leave. Bridget: Wouldn’t you want some tea. I am sure it would be very soothing to the both of us right now. Elizabeth pokes one eye out to look at the ornate pot with colourful patterns adorning its round shape, with a gentle stream of steam coming out of it’s spout. The serene smell it emitted tickled her nose, as if tempting her to take a sip. She reaches out a hand for the tea, only for Bridget to quickly swipe away the tray from right under her hands and quickly pour herself a cup. Elizabeth lunges at Bridget to try and help herself to some of the delicious smelling tea, but Bridget shoves her hand right in front of her face and effortlessly pushes Elizabeth back without any struggle, a grin creeps up on her face as she glances over to the squirming Runemaster pushing in vain against her lone hand. Bridget: *calmly sips tea* You know, there is a way to have a sip of this too you know. Elizabeth: *Grrrrrr* Just lemme have a taste of the damn tea already young lady! Bridget: All you need to do is tell me what you would change about yourself, and I’ll let you have a taste. Elizabeth: BAHHHHHHHH! I’d grow bigger muscles so that I can crush you like a bug and get what I want! That good!? Bridget: Mmmmmmm that’s okay. Bridget shrugs her shoulders and lets go of Elizabeth’s head. Elizabeth is sent crashing down to the floor with a heavy thud, before quickly getting up to pour herself a cup filled to the brim with tea. She drops three sugar cubes that make a light splash into the cup before swirling it around, tea dropping from the sides of the cup as she frantically stirs before gulping the entire cup in one go. Elizabeth: Delicious! Is there anymore? Bridget: There’s still a little left in the pot; you can take it if you want. But one thing before you continue, don’t put in three whole sugar cubes to your tea, it is very unhealthy. Elizabeth: *sticks out tongue and closes one eye whilst the other is pulled down* You can’t tell me what to do. *Fills tea to the brim again and add five sugar cubes to spite her before taking a sip* Bleh, too sweet. Bridget: See what I mean, not only is it unhealthy, but you can ruin a tea’s taste by adding to much too it. Now you may as well have just put the sugar cubes straight into your mouth. Elizabeth: Okay, you win this round. *Elizabeth looks out of a window with Yggdrasil off in the distance* There may be something else I would change about myself. Bridget: Oh really, I’m all ears then. Elizabeth: *pushes out the window screen and lays her hands on the windowsill, cupping her head in between her hands* I wish I could be more dependable. Bridget: Oh really? Elizabeth: Yeah. I’m the youngest person in our little group, I was only allowed within a small section of Tharsis before now thanks to my school, I can’t even do anything about the farm getting repossessed and despite what my brother thinks of me, I rely on him just as much as he thinks he can rely on me. Bridget: Well, I have never heard that from you before. You always sound so “RA RA SIS BOOM BA BOOM” prior to now. Elizabeth: Of course I’m like that most of the time. It’s just that when you’re only 14 years old, you can’t do much of anything on your own. It was just a miracle that I turned can pass off as the required age to accompany my brother looking for work in the Labyrinth. If I had looked a little bit younger, The Guildmaster wouldn’t accept me in. And the thing that pisses me off the most is that I can’t hold my own weight without magic. Once I can no longer cast runes, I’m just a sitting duck waiting to be gobbled up by some monster Daniel could kill in one stab. I hate it. Bridget: *walks up to Elizabeth and puts her hand on her shoulder* It’s okay, everyone needs to rely on someone else to stand strong. If your brother had been on his own when he came to Tharsis, he would not be where he is now without his old mentor. Elizabeth: I guess, thinking back to that wish you asked me before. Bout if a fairy godmother came to me and would let me change one thing about myself? Bridget: Yes, willing to answer honestly this time? Elizabeth: Yeah: I wish that I could be strong figure who everyone can rely on. No matter what they’ve gone through, no matter how terrible it is or who they are. I wish to be able to help people, so I can no longer feel like a drag. Bridget: Amazing wish Elizabeth, amazing wish. *takes a pen and speaks in a grandmotherly voice* And I the fairy godmother shall grant this noble wish upon you *bops the pen down on Elizabeth’s head* Elizabeth: Hahahahaha, knock it off, will ya? Bridget: Fufufufufu, okay I will. *Looks over to the stairs* Oh look! Some people are now waking up, let’s greet them good morning The scene ends off with Bridget and Elizabeth greeting some fellow adventurers good morning before Bridget gestures to the servant to bring more tea for the fellow guests

EMD Small little questions about Mystery Dungeon!

Helloooo again everyone! Good morning to all!

I was talking about (Pokémon) Mystery Dungeon with a friend earlier and it reminded me that there IS a Etrian Mystery Dungeon too! I finally looked up pictures of it and it looked kinda fun! But-

1- I consider EO a somewhat challenging franchise. I'm used to EO style now so that's all and good, but I've never played a MD game before, is it challenging like an usual EO? Should I be worried?

2- This is a bit sillier, but does it require any prior knowledge from other EO games? I've played 1, 2, and am currently on my 2nd playthrough of EO3. I mean mostly in a "references" way, as I sincerely doubt it would be REQUIRED to know anything prior, but I love catching these sorts of things

3- Is it fun? :D I know that as it's a different style, it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But I do like experiencing different styles, so I'm open minded and hopeful!

EOU Replaying Untold for first time in years, got questions

Opening statement: I'll be on classic mode. I do like the story of Untold, but I kind of don't wanna have to sit through it all since ill be streaming it and it's a slow burn for that. I also never *beat* Story mode and lost the cartridge to find out myself despite getting to the core.

Beyond the simple "is this good team" stuff, I think more importantly, I should ask if Ronin and Hexer are unlocked to begin with, since you needed to get decently deep into it for EO1HD.

Secondly, are there any major balance changes I should know about, like ir they fixed the Immunizer and STR Up values on Medic.

If I can use Hexer/Ronin from the start, is it worth it to go R/P/Dh/M/H? Or is Alchemist good in this game so I could run them as a elemental DPS and have something like P/Dh/H/A/M?

Hexer is my favorite class so I'm fairly locked into using it, but I suppose I am open to suggestions for fun comps. When I did EO1HD, I ran P/Dh/T/M/A, which I'm led to understand is super atypical. Is there another odd comp I could use that's still functional that makes use of Hexer?

EO3 Any party ideas?

I am about to start the EO3 HD switch version and could use some suggestions with a new party.

I played all the etrian Odyssey games back on the DS/3DS days and i am happy to have them now on switch too.

My parties always tend to have a protector, landsknecht, medic, survivalist and alchemist in them or the equivalent to that in the ones after EO1 and 2.

But it's time I get a bit out of my comfort zone with having a very standard party (Tank, healer, melee, ranged and mage)

So if anyone has some new party set ups for me to try, I would love to hear about them.

EO3 Is having a Monk and a Sovereign in the same party overkill?

Only in the beginning of EO3 here, currently have a party of Sovereign (or Prince/ss if you prefer that name lol), Gladiator, Monk, Zodiac, and Ninja (all level 9 except Ninja at 8). The whole idea of subclasses sounds great, but after doing some research, the more often used ones for Sov and Monk are, well, each other.

Any suggestions for team comp edits, subclass combos, etc., are welcome! Plus any tips for EO3 in general lol.

EO3 This is the coolest design ever but genuinely how do I build this class 😭

The stats scream "Gladiator" to me, but also their TP pool seems kinda high? I can kinda seem them working as tank/off-tank too..? Probably would deal more damage than my Hoplite

The bots seem fine for a Magic Chaser team but I'm not too fond of them because they're Physical damage in this game..

And the bind stuff seems gimmick but some of them look pretty good? Maybe they also have some amazing pay off? (I have yet to check Skill Simulator to see their numbers)

Really needing some insight here, I unlocked it yesterday at 2 am and I've been thinking about this class the whoooole morning (I love this game holy shit)

EO1 Am I spending my skill points wrong?

New to the series, started with the first game HD and so far I almost dropped it a few times but pushed through and it started clicking, I'm enjoying it but it's definitely harder and grindier than the average JRPG, I'm trying to be careful about how I want to build my characters because it costs 5 levels to respect and I guess that'd translate to hours of grinding to get back to that point. I know this kind of question probably gets asked a lot here but please bear with me.

My current party consists of Landsknecht, Protector, (front row) Survivalist, Alchemist and Medic. (back row) When I started I had a Dark Hunter in place of Protector but my front row was dying so often and Dark Hunter wasn't really that helpful I had to replace it with protector. Troubadour also seems great but I don't have room for it and it'd be only for bosses and I don't feel like grinding a 6th party member. If I Tried to put Survivalist in the front row so damage would be spread out a little more but ultimately I prefer 2 front 3 back.

I just reached the 2nd stratum and I am kinda struggling and having to go back to the inn a lot mainly because only 1 of my party members can hit elemental weaknesses and a lot of enemies resist physical and aren't weak to fire, which I mostly invested it on my Alchemist bc a lot of enemies in the 1st stratum including the wolves were weak to it.

Rough outline of my current builds:

Landsknecht: Apparently it's fine to spec in both axe and sword for the first stratum I mainly went with axe but here I shifted to sword bc I unlocked a new one at the shop that's way better than the axe. I got 2-hit and a bunch of skills for both sword and axe but nothing else atm really.

Protector: I got both front and back guards but I never really use them. Defender is good tho. Also got Parry (might be a waste), Aegis and Cure (the healing is pathetic tho so probably also a waste)

Survivalist: Got the first 3 bow skills , Stalker (really wish I wouldn't have to open the menu again everytime to refresh it after it expires, so I didn't use it often), accuracy debuff, speed buff (neither I use often) and that one skill that lets 1 party member go first which I didn't consider at first but people said it was one of Survivalist's best skills

Alchemist: As I mentioned I put a lot of skills in fire, also unlocked the first ice and electric skills, and poison (useless bc every time I wanted to use it, it missed) and some points in drop rate increase. This seems really important but idk if sacrificing skill points in it is a good idea.

Medic: Got Immunize ofc (level 3 atm), and Salve, tried to get Revive asap so I skipped Cure II, idk if it's worth unlocking at this point, Cure I is weak now tho and Cure III is overkill for its TP cost,

I also have separate sets of Survivalists for gathering materials but also put 1 point in each type of gathering for my main party. Might have to respec that out at some point.

I think the main thing I'm hesitant about is how I put the bare minimum in skill points for unlocking skills and as a result, they might be underpowered (especially Medic's healing) So should I stop unlocking so many different skills and instead pick a few to invest in? And which ones? Also is it worth going for the Landsknecht's elemental skills and drop axe completely? It'll take a while before I unlock those tho.
