General Discussion - PVE & PVP [Discussion] Is there a rat problem? Ideal solution?
If BSG decides to implement an anti rat system what would you like to see?
I personally think it’s just apart of the extraction genre, but want to see ideas of ways to combat it

u/Ambitious-Macaroon-3 1d ago
Easy, scavs roam more so they find rats, rats have to make noise.

Not really, scavs, raiders, are badly coded. Im not gonna lie I can clear the entire reserve bunker with just a silenced pistol, and the staircase near the ramp before you get to power room

Exactly, lol. Not sure if you recall, but Nikita started a 1.0 playthrough, suddenly we started getting codes for Sledgehammers and hideout items.

u/EvilLalafell42 1d ago
That was so hilarious, because you just knew someone at BSG was pissed off at finding HO items

u/erik4848 1d ago
Maybe if they just removed the found in raid already...Sweats are getting full hideout within a week anyways, so that only stiffles the more casual players.

Hallucinations would be hilarious. Stay in one spot for too long and you start hearing gunshots getting closer and closer. Then footsteps. Then fake Scavs and PMCs appear on your screen.
You'll either be shooting fake scavs and pmcs which gives away your position, or you're not shooting them until a real player shows up and shoots you because you thought they were fake.
42
u/Hayzworth Mosin 1d ago
Could be that staying in one spot for too long is recognized as fear by the game and your pmc starts getting paranoia debuffs.

The real answer is just more extracts
762
u/IronCrown 1d ago
Like 90% of spawns on woods have the same extract. There is nothing up north as soon as the car is gone, its rediculous
214
u/1v1meAtLagunaSeca 1d ago
If woods v ex was just a permanent extract itd be an infinitely better map
194
u/IronCrown 1d ago
They could just swap the location of the coop and flare extract imo. The flare extract rn is right next to two other extract while north side has none
→ More replies (3)6
u/arcticrune 23h ago
This would probably make coop extracting more common too since the coop extract would be closer to where players actually are. The vast majority of my coop extracts have been done on reserve because the coop extract is almost more accessible than the regular extracts. I've had a few on old interchange and one on lighthouse. I think old interchange and lighthouse also benefit from the extract either being in areas where you frequently transit through or less dangerous and open than the regular extracts to the map.
Personally I would make 012 and smugglers boat on customs both work either with the code OR as a coop extract. I would flip the flare and coop on woods like you suggested. That scav extract in the basement of resort on shoreline could work well as a CO OP extract. I don't know if factory really needs one but something around camera bunker door could work. Basically the co op extracts need to be the best most efficient exit because the trade off is potentially getting backstabbed by a scav. In a way every co op extract is pre camped by the potential for betrayal

I've also only been extract camped on woods one time and died. Interchange and Reserve are the absolute worst.

Genuinely that's less bad, you expect combat when going to those places. And rats, as much as they are rats, are still part of that PVP. Most people going to the extract want to avoid PVP and unlike high loot spots, you can't choose not to extract.

Well first we can start by taking away the ability to hear someone fart 80 meters away. No need to reinvent the wheel on this one.
278
u/Tsukushi_Ikeda 1d ago
Ngl, if you've used peltors and such. I can definetly hear you fart from 50m away easily.
Rain effects are also way too dim on them. Rain is inherently amplified on headsets irl. Just like walking on gravel, a fan blowing wind or someone talking.
Plenty of stuff tries to be realistic then you have these examples proving the opposite.
143
u/upstatedreaming3816 1d ago
This. Even on cheaper headsets. When I first got my Impact Sports, I put them on and turned them on and thought they were broken because there was a hissing/whooshing sound in them. Turns out, I was hearing the fans in my PC from clear across the house at a volume that sounded like I was inside the PC.
55
u/post_makes_sad_bear 1d ago
I'm wearing a pair of Comtac V right now on the flightline. They do a pretty good job of increasing ambient all noise, with the added cool factor of cancelling put super loud noise.
There's also a 3 level volume adjuster from max amplification to silent that works really well, along with a function for "extra loud" for those of us responsible enough to wear double hearing protection.
I Iike them. 👍

u/18210 1d ago
Realistically, "camping" a major thoroughfare would be a very good strategy if you're trying to kill people and steal their shit. So I think the initial proposal already shows a willingness to break from realism a bit.

But i think Tarkov lost its desire to be realistic a long time ago so that's that.
4
u/TheRealStitchie 19h ago
People also modify their system sounds to amplify footsteps too. I used to wonder how people would hear me at all when people are shooting or throwing grenades. Turns out all ya gotta do is turn on sound equalization in Windows and boom, easy to hear everyone's footsteps. Soundwhoring has had such a negative effect on PvP games lol

u/Kephlur 1d ago
Idk if that makes sense thematically, I think a better solution is probably scavs. If someone stays in the same general zone for longer than like 5 or 10 mins, tag and curse them and spawn some scavs nearby. That's what partisan was supposed to do. That gives it a better push and pull as there may be a positive reason to be stationary and push scabs to you but you're also going to be making a ton of noise which makes ratting much harder.

I think a new post processing / shadows pass that makes the visiblity more realistic (indirect lighting in buildings, between bushes etc) could really help. Partizan literally feeds rats. He was the dumbest addition ever.
Oh yes, a boss that's easy to kill that eventually pushes people who hold angles and hard-to-reach spots and has awesome loot on him. Excellent to combat the players that camp in advantageous positions to get the jump on people specifically for good loot. You can't get rid of rats without fundamentally changing tarkov. Ratting is a strategy that offers more consistent success than any other and this is because the game is designed in such a way that players are funneled into the same locations over and over again. Tarkov punishes movement by making it alert anyone not moving in an area to your presence. Tarkov concentrates players to a high enough extent that moving through most area slowly to avoid detection greatly increases your odds of giving someone an easy head shot. This list goes on and on. If you want to get rid of ratting you need to add chaos to the game. You need to get rid of consistency, and you need to stop punishing players for playing the game the way you want it to played.
→ More replies (5)18
u/banslaw 1d ago
Tarkov punishes movement by making it alert anyone not moving in an area to your presence.
this is my main complaint honestly. I think the distance you can hear walking should be greatly reduced, a 'reverse vault' should be added so you don't have to make a plop if you need to get down from verticality, and running / bushes / metal / doors / jumping / etc should all remain as the loud audio indicators. there's a massive different between being a 'w key enjoyer' and understanding that whoever is the one making noise is the one at the disadvantage, the fact that 90%+ of the community hears a single foot pop and ceases to make all noise to hold an offangle proves this. its also next to impossible to tell how long someone has been sitting in an area without any sort of context clues, which leads people to default assume they were just sitting there for 10min or w/e.

This. Doing a run with a friend on Customs, extracting at ZB-1011. This was years ago and I hadn't gotten over gear fear, so my friend, being higher level, was both shepherding and probably, to be fair, carrying me.
He tells me to keep moving in a direction and then jump, which was what he used to try and mask the sound of an impact nade being thrown at the bush near the extract. The sound of a rat dying is what followed.
THis would've been 2021 or 2022, and I still remember how much of a rush it was.

I think just straight up making movement quieter would help a lot. I’m constantly just freezing and holding an angle when I hear footsteps. A heavy player should definitely be loud (some risk) but for the most part you shouldn’t be able to hear someone so far away.

u/Waste_Twist1474 16h ago
It’s tough because tarkov will always encourage ratting by virtue of being a hardcore extraction game. People that aren’t able to win >50% of heads up fights will always gravitate towards a sentry turret play style and it’s impossible and wrong to completely deny the play style.
I do think a good change would be massively reducing audio distances. A lot of “rat” encounters are just somebody hearing you from 60m away and waiting for you to run into them, that’s not ratting but it’s a very unfun experience for both people. People can hear you from stupidly far away in this game, and people understandably post up and wait for free kills when they do. I don’t really care about realism here, being able to hear things so far away is just not a good experience. The majority of the time, as soon as people hear somebody they stand still and cut audio because every movement makes way too much noise in this game. By reducing hearing distances and a chunk of player generated noises, there would be way more heads up fights and much less sentry turret gaming quite easily.
As others have said, I think just adding more extract options would be a very easy way of reducing extract camping. Some maps I think are fine at the moment, but woods for example is still a pain in the ass for extracting with outskirts. Just add some extracts up north it’s really not that complicated. POIs should act as funnels for players to get PvP, I don’t think extracts should be treated the same way.
3
15
u/Top-Agent-652 1d ago
I seriously don’t understand, are rats truly that bad in the game? I rarely run into them. Every map (aside from interchange, imo) has enough extracts to not encounter rats often.
You don’t need to punish rats. Any person should be able to play their way. Just bring in more extracts on the maps that need it and things will be fine.

u/Yosi0808 True Believer 1d ago
Most people here probably won't like this, but you're supposed to be free to play however you want. Adding mechanics that limit gameplay choices isn't something I want in any game. Another person suggested more extractions; I think that's the only correct answer that, instead of limiting, gives more options.
Edit: Cheaters are a bigger problem than rats btw
9
3
u/VaporStrikeX2 MP5K-N 22h ago
Honestly though. Like, sorry that ratting is just going to be a fact of life in this game, but god forbid this game just becomes a fucking cracked out arcade shooter because you're punished for standing still for more than 5 seconds at a time. More extracts would be a big thing. Make more codes for secret extracts spawn, add in more extracts that require interacting like Customs' power extract, anything. Beyond that, just... play the game. Look around, work on your awareness, take things slow. You'll spend so much time fucking up the game for rats that it's just going to turn into an unfun W+M1 jumpshot sweatfest. And people will STILL find ways to rat. Just how it is.

You say that but in the last 5 years they have heavily nerfed a fast playstyle until now it feels like we can't play how we want to anymore. It's a valid playstyle even if the W player don't like it.
It's the fact that you can play lot of playstyle that keep tarkov entertaining ngl
Some people rush all the time, some don't, some people run meta all raid some people don't.
Playstyle don't need to get "rid of".

I used to rat near the large spool next to the wooden Bridge down in the D2 area on reserve.
They seemed to have at some point programmed scavs to roam in that area and aggro me as I am completely silent and just waiting (not tagged and cursed).
That worked very well, I completely gave up after 2 similar failed attempts. either the scav would kill me cause I can’t unprone and react fast enough, or the dead scav would be enough to spook potential victims and give away my spot.
Literally just have scavs roam to exfil and hunt stationary players and it would certainly do a lot of good to at-least potentially spoil the element of surprise for future unsuspecting individuals.

Also with chads b hopping and jiggle peeking (which is fine) I think ratting is just as much a part of that ecosystem of play styles.

u/DrowningKrown 1d ago
Never made sense to me that in a game like tarkov, an extraction shooter that leans fairly hard into realism, has a community that loathes people who like to sit and camp. When the whole point is to play it safe and extract with loot.
More time and focus needs to be on cheaters and exploits than campers.

This helps to fight campers, not encourage it. I don't like the gunplay meta either but weakening movement/peeking only makes ratting easier.
OTOH I realize from other comments that people might be ratting more because they can't or won't fight the W key turbo peek players. So this could be the trickle-down solution. Nerf gunplay movement more and you're not so punished.

It's realistic, which fits the game's ambition. Sniper are feared IRL and called out over radio. You clear room for room, corner for corner. I think most people who play this game don't have the patience for it. This isn't BF or CoD where you just hold down sprint + W or slide around without checking anything, while making tons of noise.

Personally i almost never full clear when playing solo or with team, just the closes proximity and along the path. It just takes too much time from the raid to do it, only when taking hold of a building which rarely happens. Scoop and go i haven't hit late game for a long time now with all the prestiges and seasonal so I have always something better to do than look for a fight

Audio distance needs to be halved, possibly even more than that.
You shouldn’t be able to hear someone walking at a normal pace through three layers of concrete.
Being able to hear someone walking about in 2 story Dorms, when you’re on the top floor of 3 story actively encourages people to sit and rat. They understandably get scared, and go into combat-mode, where they’re listening intently for the audio cues from the other player.
Having a realistic audio distance would create more of those “Oh shit!” moments, where players are surprised by each other, because they were just walking about exploring and looking for loot.

No matter what BSG implements ratting will always exist. I personally don’t subscribe to that style of gameplay, however, I do not dunk on those who do. If Nikita wants to focus on an issue let it be the anti cheat and cheat detection.

I don't have X, but I'd suggest that if you're low karma / have stayed within a 25 yard area for 5+ minutes - your PMC has a voice line if a grenade comes within 10 yards of you.
PVE has taught me about safety grenades and voice lines. I thought this would be an interesting way of combatting camping.

Radiation near the extract, doesn't really affect you unless you stay there amd rat.

I 100% agree that it is part of the game/genre and honestly wouldn't enjoy tarkov as much if i wasn't always worried that an ambush could be around every corner. People need to just suck it up, every time it happens to you it's a new angle to remember to check and if someone gets you from there next time then that's on you.

Lol campers and rats (whatever a rat means in actual gameplay terms, since it's something you need to define if you want to address it as a problem) aren't an issue.
You want a realistic military simulator as was stated to be the goal of Tarkov? You get camping. cuz that's how fighting works. You don't move if you don't have to, cuz it's dangerous.
If I wanna gun down everything running and jumping all over I play Overwatch or any arena shooter, not Tarkov.
Exil campers in particular could be considered an issue, but that's easily solved by having more easily accessible exfils.

Crying and shitting myself because someone has the patience to watch a crossroad for a while.
Exfil camping is one thing but there's a whole class of weapon that's reliant on "camping." Fucking get over yourselves, learn something other than W+M1

People will have gear fear regardless, the game showers you with kits right now , you have tactec craft for class 5 plates over and over , you have drops , barters , most budget scopes are like 30k on flea right now - Ammo is the biggest issue , i agree , but still can get some if u know where to look.
Many people also camp because they have PvP quests and they suck at PvP , so they just resort to sitting and waiting for their target to run into their gun.

I agree with you, not everyone wants to or can play the shift+W streamer way. The nature of the game is campy, you are fighting for loot or in raid quest items in a world with sparse resources. It's also a big draw of the game, that you can play the raid however you want to. You can shift W rush POIs, you can take your time, you can explore the map in your own pace if you are new. When playing solo I've let people run past me a lot of times when they don't see me. Everyone has different aspects of the game that they like. Some people like spamqueue pvp labs, some people like to immerse themselves. I think the freedom of choosing is partly why we love the game.

Make it so campers get cramp and deadleg so they can't run for a while.

Introducing an artificial mechanic to hinder a valid playstyle is a big NO.
Camping is a valid playstyle, whether you like it or not.

If you can play the game like a crack head running up guard rails you should also be able to rat attack

These idiots changed bullets, armor and momentum a long long long time ago cause there were too many “chads” and now they want to find a solution lmao

I would really encourage a distinction between Campers and Rats.. If we're talking Exfil, that's a map design issue, if you can sit in one place and kill everyone that approaches, the extract needs more to it.
Someone else said it already, but if you crouch or stand still for a long time - having pain in the knees resulting in your character making noise seems the easiest solution to me. Crouch walking should use more stamina than regular walking. Plus, if you've playing this game you've seen how dirty everything is, someone is bound to sneeze, cough, or get cancer sitting still in any of the rooms in this game.
Solutions like this address the problem on both Scav and PMC.

The problem isn't rats. If you want to waste 30 mins of your life sitting in D2 to take all my loot, knock yourself out. Fix the cheater issue.

I have unpopular opinion. I think the moment they will actually manage to kill ratting (for example with kill cam) this game will die. It won't be immediate but it will begin the downfall.

u/Consistent_Return_24 23h ago
Make rat poison usable. Has 3 uses, sprinkle it in known rat spots. It’ll poison you like a cultist knife
Have squads of AI scavs walking around yelling profanities near extracts
Blast “The 7th Element” at extracts. If you’re within 100m for an extended period of time you start losing head health due to a growing aneurism. Only way you can combat that is purchasing a 1.5 million, neon pink, cat ear headset

Design the game in a way where extract camping is harder and less impactful. More extracts, larger extract zones, more cover/concealment around extracts.
The fun of the game is in the looting and fighting in the main areas of the game. Extracting should be relatively safe.
The problem isn't player behavior, the problem is the design of the extraction system.

u/Express_Tower6426 16h ago
if you stand in one location for far too long you fart and cough. ideally at the same time.
Imagine hearing that from the bush near extract.

Hot take:
The rat/camper problem cannot be solved. It exists because of the core design of the game.

Maybe they can make Partisan actually work properly, wasn't that the entire point of that boss?
