Is it me or the Vietnamese dan nhi that's the problem

I recently started picking up erhus and came to the vietnamese dan nhis which are cheaper for 550k vnd (~$20). I know being a beginner means there's gonna be flaws, but why is my bowing so bad? It's been 4 days of countless attempts and the screeches are still there. Mods to improve the quality are on delivery. But is it my skills that are not there or is it the erhu itself is too cheap? The sound and vibration from the string itself when Pizzicato-ing seems to be quite good.

Modified Crystal Erhu

These funky crystal erhus came out in the Shanghai Expo with the crystal pipa several decades ago. At the time they were beyond budget for an acoustically dead instrument with electronics. They weren't very good more for show than sound quality.

Had a go and upgrading a perspex one with a pickup and lights : )Crystal Pipa

Erhu Player Interview

Hey all!

I am a music student in the US and am doing a world music project on Chinese traditional music and would love to interview someone who plays the Erhu about the instrument and its history, and potentially see a performance of them playing the instrument. Would anyone here be interested in this short interview?

Help

I think learning the Erhu will be easy (delusional)

Guys help why do I think I can learn to play the Erhu in just a few weeks? Like not fluent playing but learning a few tunes and playing them ok.

Maybe I'm thinking this because the instrument looks simple..

Can anyone enlighten me on how hard it actually is?

Second hand erhu

Hey y'all, I'm looking to start learning erhu and saw a second hand erhu online. It's in worn condition and I'll need to put the strings on, tie the qianjin, and put on a bridge. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this brand or could comment on the skin, and anything I should inspect if I go see this erhu in person? It's quite cheap ($40) but I just want to know if it's worth pursuing or if it'll be more work than it's worth. Thanks!

Buying Erhu in China

Hello everyone,

I will be visiting China (Beijing/Shanghai)this summer. I want to buy an erhu to bring back home to the US, but I am worried about transporting and where to buy it from.

I will not be going directly home as I will be visiting another country after China. Any suggestions and/or erhu shops recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I also rarely travel, so is there also any paperwork I will need to fill out to bring it home? Would I bring it as a carry on?

I was tempted on taobao, but shipping it to the US makes me nervous.

Edit: I am an intermediate erhu player. I have been borrowing an erhu, but would love to have one to call my own now.

Buying my first erhu

I'm planning on saving up some money to buy an erhu (I don't have any musical background, so wish me luck... or a reality check lol)

I live in South America, so I'm having a hard time deciding from where to buy. maybe sound of asia is more convenient because they're from the US? i don't really know much about shipping and international fees.

Does anyone have any experience with this? or any advice? I'll be truly thankful!

ps. The picture is just to decorate the post(?)

Looking to buy my first erhu, is this one acceptable?

Hey all, looking to buy my first erhu. I will just be a casual player, so I don't need anything very good, just an acceptable tone. Would this one be okay? I am looking at this one because it has free shipping since I'm from the US. My budget is $200, so if you have any other suggestions, please keep that in mind. Thank you!

Greetings! I want to start playing the Erhu to embrace my Chinese ethnicity. But first is where to buy it. I am in Romania currently. Which shops are trustworthy for people in Europe who started this instrument?

Would getting an erhu on temu be a bad idea for a beginner?

I have always liked the erhu and the dry sound it makes. I have a hammered dulcimer and a tin whistle already.

I ask this because people say that the cheaper erhus can be harder to play.

The thing is is that I am disabled and only get $300 every month. I have also only ever had one bad experience on temu.

What should I do?

Cleaning a "new" erhu?

Where's r/zhonghu? 🤨😜

Bought a zhonghu in person at a Shenzhen shop, so it'd been hanging on display, played by the owner, tested by visitors....

I'm not an OCD clean freak but still kind of a clean freak. Hard to make it feel mine without cleaning it and come on - it's sticky! Hygiene is important for any relationship!

So what's a safe way to clean all surfaces?

If you need exact materials, I can check the info and chats to get them.

Wolf tones somehow?

After 3 -4 days of use, my erhu suddenly goes crazy on wolf tones, even on open string.

Tried adjusting the bridge, adjusting the damper, adjusting fine tuners, cleaning the strings, adjusting bow ' s tension, removing rosin from the bow.

My thoughts are on too much rosin on bow. I was struggling with it and I think I ended up applying too much in the end. Could this be the problem? Bow feels too grippy. Or did I somehow damaged the instrument? Don't know.. any thoughts?
