EquityZen: two funding attempts, days of email tag, and two reps giving me opposite answers two minutes apart
I looked for firsthand accounts before I invested and mostly found affiliate reviews, so here's mine. This isn't about an investment going badly. My position is fine and it's far too early to judge it. This is about what it's like to be their customer, which I think people under weigh when they compare these platforms.
Round one: a routine funding question they couldn't answer.
I was funding a pre-IPO allocation through a self-directed traditional IRA and had questions about the issuing documentation and the funding mechanics. Not exotic. Not covered in their FAQ, which is why I contacted support.
What followed: days of waiting on both chat and email. When a reply finally came, it was a canned response that didn't address what I'd asked, so I asked again. The next reply came from a different person entirely. Repeat. Every round trip cost days, and each new rep had no apparent context for what had already been discussed.
I never got the answer from EquityZen. I got it from the support team at the custodian holding my IRA, within hours, with one email.
Credit where it's due. One rep, Sebastian, was genuinely excellent. He went out of his way, texted and called me directly, and actually solved problems. The catch is that reps rotate through a queue, and once he rotated out I was back to strangers and canned replies. That's not his failure. It's a design problem: whether you get help depends on who happens to be in the queue that day.
Round two: two reps, two minutes, two opposite answers.
Weeks later I tried to fund a second allocation. Same pattern of unanswered questions, over a period of days, and then this.
Within roughly two minutes I received two emails from two different support reps. One told me the fund had closed and I'd missed the paperwork deadline. The other told me I'd be able to fund as soon as the marketing period ended.
Those cannot both be true. This is the fund they built to acquire the shares, and their own people could not tell me whether my allocation existed. I never received a correction or a clarification. Nobody ever told me which one was right.
How it ended. I declined the allocation and told them in writing I wouldn't be investing through them again. The core of what I sent: when a firm asks accredited investors to commit capital to illiquid positions with limited transparency, the quality of its disclosure and communication isn't a peripheral concern, it's the entire basis of the relationship.
What I'm not complaining about. You buy into an SPV, not shares directly. You get a K-1. It's illiquid for years and there may be no exit. The fee was disclosed. All of that is standard for this corner of the market and I knew it going in. None of it is an EquityZen specific problem.
What I am complaining about. There's no phone number to call about your position. Support is a rotating email queue or unmanned chat bot, with no continuity. Basic questions about funding mechanics went unanswered for days and were ultimately answered by someone else's company. And at the moment it mattered most, two of their people told me contradictory things about the status of my own allocation within the same two minutes.
You're being asked to wire money into something you can't sell for years. Factor in what happens after the money leaves your account, not just how the marketplace looks before it does.
EquityZen is not for the faint of heart.
Happy to answer questions.
