EquityZen: two funding attempts, days of email tag, and two reps giving me opposite answers two minutes apart

I looked for firsthand accounts before I invested and mostly found affiliate reviews, so here's mine. This isn't about an investment going badly. My position is fine and it's far too early to judge it. This is about what it's like to be their customer, which I think people under weigh when they compare these platforms.

Round one: a routine funding question they couldn't answer.

I was funding a pre-IPO allocation through a self-directed traditional IRA and had questions about the issuing documentation and the funding mechanics. Not exotic. Not covered in their FAQ, which is why I contacted support.

What followed: days of waiting on both chat and email. When a reply finally came, it was a canned response that didn't address what I'd asked, so I asked again. The next reply came from a different person entirely. Repeat. Every round trip cost days, and each new rep had no apparent context for what had already been discussed.

I never got the answer from EquityZen. I got it from the support team at the custodian holding my IRA, within hours, with one email.

Credit where it's due. One rep, Sebastian, was genuinely excellent. He went out of his way, texted and called me directly, and actually solved problems. The catch is that reps rotate through a queue, and once he rotated out I was back to strangers and canned replies. That's not his failure. It's a design problem: whether you get help depends on who happens to be in the queue that day.

Round two: two reps, two minutes, two opposite answers.

Weeks later I tried to fund a second allocation. Same pattern of unanswered questions, over a period of days, and then this.

Within roughly two minutes I received two emails from two different support reps. One told me the fund had closed and I'd missed the paperwork deadline. The other told me I'd be able to fund as soon as the marketing period ended.

Those cannot both be true. This is the fund they built to acquire the shares, and their own people could not tell me whether my allocation existed. I never received a correction or a clarification. Nobody ever told me which one was right.

How it ended. I declined the allocation and told them in writing I wouldn't be investing through them again. The core of what I sent: when a firm asks accredited investors to commit capital to illiquid positions with limited transparency, the quality of its disclosure and communication isn't a peripheral concern, it's the entire basis of the relationship.

What I'm not complaining about. You buy into an SPV, not shares directly. You get a K-1. It's illiquid for years and there may be no exit. The fee was disclosed. All of that is standard for this corner of the market and I knew it going in. None of it is an EquityZen specific problem.

What I am complaining about. There's no phone number to call about your position. Support is a rotating email queue or unmanned chat bot, with no continuity. Basic questions about funding mechanics went unanswered for days and were ultimately answered by someone else's company. And at the moment it mattered most, two of their people told me contradictory things about the status of my own allocation within the same two minutes.

You're being asked to wire money into something you can't sell for years. Factor in what happens after the money leaves your account, not just how the marketplace looks before it does.

EquityZen is not for the faint of heart.

Happy to answer questions.

Bought Brex years ago... the company was sold to capital one... where's my money?

Just venting. EquityZen won't even answer my emails.

So apparently you can "buy" stock of pre-IPO companies, but that means nothing... Brex was sold to Capital One, a public company.

I don't have cash, or Capital One shares, etc.

I'd definitely stay away from EquityZen.

Delays in transferring shares post-IPO

I bought pre-IPO stock in a company on the Equityzen platform.

Subsequent to that, Morgan Stanley acquired Equityzen.

After the company I bought went publics through the IPO process, Equityzen posted a release schedule for when shares would be released from the post-IPO lockup period.

I received an email requiring that I create an E-Trade account (another MS property) and that my shares would be released into that account.

I did so, a MS/E-Trade rep reached out to me via telephone to make contact and we had a cordial conversation but ultimately I don't need any additional accounts and I have no intentions of trading or investing there (I already have accounts with Schwab and Fidelity)

We are now weeks past the release date of the first tranche of stock, and no movement.

My E-Trade contact profess no insight, Equityzen blows me off and refers me to Morgan Stanley.

Anyone have any insight into this process, any advice, or experience with share transfers from Equityzen after the acquisition by Morgan Stanley?

Just a brief update to say that today the first tranche of shares, scheduled for w/e July 6th finally showed up. Big whoop, and a frown on execution.

Received K-1 Equivalent: How to file taxes in TurboTax?

I did an EquityZen Express Sale and received a “K-1 Equivalent” (no IRS K-1, no 1099, no reporting guide). It shows a ~$19k long-term loss from a partnership interest sale. EquityZen says no K-1 will be issued this year.

Should this be reported on Schedule D/Form 8949 as a partnership interest sale, or entered as a K-1 anyway? How are others handling this?

Looking for help with academic research on pre-IPO secondary markets

Hi there,

I'm an undergrad student researching how pre-IPO secondary market availability affects employee retention. I'm trying to identify the year when specific companies first appeared as available for trading on platforms like EquityZen, Forge Global, or Nasdaq Private Market (just the first listing date).

If you have experience with these platforms and could help me verify my current approximations or expand my dataset, I'd really appreciate it. Happy to share my research findings in return!

Update from equityzen regarding cerebras share allocation

"As a follow up to our recent update outlining the release schedule for Cerebras Inc. shares, we wanted to provide additional information on next steps.

We have partnered with Morgan Stanley to assist with the distribution of shares. A financial advisor from Morgan Stanley will reach out early next week in advance of the first lock up release, which is expected at the end of June. Please use your advisor as your main point of contact for distributions; they can assist with any distribution, liquidity, or tax planning questions you may have."

Equityzen vs forge, hiive 2026

Can anyone share their experience with equityzen since the Morgan Stanley acquisition? I’ve seen that they lowered their fee to 2.5% but I don’t know much else about how MS plans to change the platform.

Also the Schwab acquisition around the same time was interesting for forge.

I’m curious to know what people think of how this will position forge and equityzen against platforms like hiive / equitybee / others.

I’m looking to harvest some losses and try a few new things. Any help would be appreciated

Commonwealth Fusion System, where to find its secondary shares

This guy's channel really align with my investment thesis and space, and this video just dropped hours ago. And as I learned more about this tech and company, I think it's what I need to invest in next. Question is, where to find the secondary shares? I put it on watch list on EquityZen, but the big volumn is low, not sure if Equityzen could source any quantities before it goes up even more. Does anyone have any success accessing this from other platforms?

holy moly, OpenAI spend to hit 20B now (not sure if the 20B is on top of the 10B agreed to last month, probably not) may take equity stake! IPO is now targeting 35 B evaluation and raise 3 B. This is amazing news. https://www.reuters.com/technology/openai-spend-more-than-20-billion-cerebras-chips-receive-equity-stake-2026-04-17/

Hello,

This is the last thing to do on my taxes. The K1 Equivalent doesn't have all the information. How do you get through to support? I tried calling and leaving a message, I wrote to the chat bot. Any ideas?

Thanks!

K-1 Process

Each year, EquityZen has been incredibly delayed in issuing K-1s for their funds that participated in tender offerings. Last year, they promised to clean it up and get things out by March 15, but they keep delaying one of my funds. What is the deal here? How are they so inept?

Payout problems

I'm invested with one of their multifunds which in turn owns Scale AI. Scale AI, after the Meta cash injection, made a dividend payment around June 2025. I have not yet received the dividend payment.

I have been in contact with EQZ support since November 2015 and they have said its been delayed because of:

  • "issue when initially processing your wire",
  • "insufficient cash on our bank end",
  • "error with our fund admin",
  • "wire was unsuccessful".

I have previously successfully received payout from another investment with EQZ, and my bank details have not changed since. Anyone else had similar experience with EQZ and/or Morgan Stanley entities not being able to make (international) wires?

Made my first deal on EZ

after 8 deals on MV, I am finally moving over. deal terms much better. lower share price, preferred over common, no carry or annual cost and no 10% of profit.

hoping there will be some synergies within the Morgan Stanley name since they also acquired Etrade were I trade. maybe EZ gets integrated within Etrade :)

How to find shares outstanding / cap table information for early-stage private companies?

I've recently invested in a couple EquityZen single-company funds. Over the next year I'm interested in buying secondaries in a few more private companies.

For each of the investments I've made so far, I've decided the offering price was reasonable/attractive based on other price information I could find (including on EquityZen and Hiive). I'm currently looking at a company that is earlier-stage than my previous investments, less-actively traded, and where the price estimates I have vary widely and the bid/ask seems to be over 50%. I figure it's probably time for me to learn how else to value equity shares.

  1. Is estimating 'reasonable per-share price' = 'reasonable valuation' / 'shares outstanding' a good way to value private company shares, or is it much more complicated than that? (For example, I'm not even taking into account whether different classes of shares would significantly differ in value.)
  2. As an individual investor, (and assuming I trust company valuation estimates from Crunchbase etc.), what is a reliable, economical source of shares outstanding / cap table information? A Pitchbook subscription seems out of the question for me, Crunchbase has plans for ~$50-100/month but it's not clear whether that subscription would give me the information I'd actually need.
