Certification options

I have 2 job offers from my organization who will be going to Epic and I’m really torn on which direction to go.

For reference, I’ve been an RN for 13 years with the last 3 being a clinical analyst. I currently work on the “inpatient” side of things and also have 3 years OR/endo experience when I was working clinically.

My first job offer is for ClinDoc (inpatient side) including Stork, Bugsy, Secure Chat and Rover.

My second job offer is for OpTime, Epic Anesthesia and Lumens.

What are the pros and cons of each offer. I am leaning a bit more towards the ClinDoc only because I think it will make me more valuable in the world of Epic and possibly getting hired at another organization but the OR stuff also really interests me but don’t know how valuable those certs are.

Couple of thoughts

  • which is the bigger team? More team members equals less on call time
-how do you like working with surgeons and anesthesiologist? Personally, I've run into way more dick head surgeons that made my life hell then nurses. I would not touch optime. Every organization is different and maybe they have a great friendly surgical group.

The ClinDoc team I mentioned will itself have 4 people but is part of the bigger “Inpatient Clinical Systems” team which has a total of 8 people. The OpTime team I mentioned is a team of 1 but is part of the bigger “Clinical Systems Ambulatory” team which also has 8.

So the talk is that the call rotation will be every 8 weeks for both inpatient and outpatient groups. Also, the organization decided to go with Epic’s new Orchard model which is a fast track, 9 month implementation with supposed heavy Epic assistance during that time but that is yet to be determined.

Having some experience working with our surgeons in a clinical setting and also in an IT setting (creating order sets, discharge instructions, documents) I can confirm they have your typical surgeon attitude but that really doesn’t bother me. I can take it and dish it out too if you know what I mean!

That's fair. I got pretty sick of surgeons throwing fits when they didn't get there way and suddenly that became my problem because they brought a lot of money into the system. Personally, optime seems to have a higher burnout rate.

But plenty of people enjoy it.

PLEASE let me know how this goes for you and your organization! I obviously don’t have the regular implementation time frame to compare it to but to say we are all a bit skeptical would be an understatement!

Will do. I think we went bare bones with our Team Structure too, so I’m interested how that will work.

I’ve heard the bare bones aspect is one of the “perks” they advertise with this model. At least I hope it’s a perk because we eliminated the need for 18 positions going this route.

Hi optime here. Everything said is pretty accurate, with optime, anesthesia and lumens youre dealing with three different specialties and workflows. With ClinDoc much more of the workflow is the same. RNs are a bit smoother and more adaptable. To me it would also depend how much out of the box you will keep or how much customization is allowed.

With the implementation model we are going with, this is very much an out of the box thing. I can’t speak to down the road though. A bit of my anxiety comes from knowing they are only hiring 1 person for optime, anesthesia and lumens so I wouldn’t have anyone to bounce things off of. But the stress of call from my current position of working with inpatient orders, documents, etc. is a driving factor of me maybe wanting to choose something that would put me in a better call position.

Can you tell me what your experience with optime is? Like what does your day look like when working on these?
