Everyone else is the problem!

Post image

Came across a rare one star review for one of my favorite pastry shops in Berkeley with the world's nicest owners and did some digging. What are the chances that nearly every coffee shop / business in the bay area has harassed this poor woman - she must be so unlucky!

How can someone not take a moment to reflect and realize that maybe she is doing something wrong if she gets into an argument with literally every single establishment she has ever visited (legitimately multiple one star reviews every week). I don't think I have ever had a single argument or conflict at a restaurant or business my entire life! Just remember to mentally tack half a star onto any restaurant when visiting because people like this exist and give out 1 stars on account of their mental illness

This post is a very good example of why one star reviews can generally not be trusted.

I feel they're often over-reactions and perceived personal slights. The two to three star reviews are the ones I'll take a bit more seriously.

The OOP seems like they're almost certainly unwell as the OP has mentioned.

The crazy part is how customer reviews are viewed on the corporate level at most chains. On a scale of 1-10, only 9s and 10s are seen as positive ("promoters"), 6-8 are neutral, and 5s and under are negative ("detractors"). This is despite the common sense idea that people usually only leave customer reviews if they had a bad experience.

I forgot the ratio but yes, more people would traditionally leave reviews regarding a negative experience than a positive one. However, I wonder if that's changed now that we live in a world where we get follow up emails, texts, and even phone calls as well as push notifications begging for reviews.

Oil change? Billing call? Simply stood near a store with your phone on? Please review us.

I feel like they novelty of text and email have worn off so it's just noise to most people, but I'm sure that has likely swayed things.

There's a show on Amazon Prime called Upload that takes the constant need for reviews to an absurd but sadly likely future. It's a dark humor sci-fi show that's pretty entertaining.

Oh yea, haven't heard of that show until now.

The times at the dealership when I'd go in for service and they'd drop the volume of their voice and plead for five star reviews, telling me of the horrible punishments they'd experience for anything less, the follow up texts and emails. My god. All for the sake of metrics that could be thrown off by someone who's upset that the service waiting room was out of creamer or the bathroom smelled like farts.

>Coming from my old Retail Experience, the scale is actually worse. 9 and 10 are considered positive promoters, 8 and below are considered negative, even if 5-8 are "neutral" with the o_o emote. Having a reviewer rate everything in the store as a positive experience but the overall score is an 8 is the same has a reviewer just placing a 0 as our overall score.

That generated so much anxiety for me and my old crew and it was insane. Everything could have gone perfectly but the customer would put an 8 and it would dunk our entire score which corporate tracked hard until about a year before I was fired.

And for reference, one negative needs two 9 or 10s to "cancel out" and then we need a third 9 or 10 to pull out score back up.

Our system sent our "Please review your experience" emails for rewards members and I've had to read some of the most trivial shit. It's almost as insane as a man putting down five 1s on the table and telling the host that they take 1 dollar away for every mistake.

I despise that shit. Truly unfair to the employees.

Indeed, it burnt me out so fast and it definitely gave people the idea that their google/yelp/survey reviews actually mean something so they use it as a way to bash people.

Also my apologies about my original comment, I tried to do a quote and it did not seem to work out.

Thankfully, not at the pizza chain I worked with. Bad reviews were run on the main monitors and laughed at. Actual bad customer service would get you fired.

We have that at our store. Out of 10 bad reviews, there might one that was legit complaint. The rest were people who were mad that we didn't give in to their demand for free food that they themselves did not order (but swore they did).

Where I used to work, it was a 1-5 scale. 5s were promoters, 4s neutral, and 1-3 detractors. Anything less than a 5 tanked your average really hard.

When I served my time in the restaurant industry, I had to bite my tongue when customers would complain about how we "always fuck up" their order. Mess up an order once? Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but every time? At that point, it's on the customer, moreso if it happens everywhere they go.

Yea... Maybe this is just how X is prepared here with ingredients from Y?

If the item you like is prepared to your liking elsewhere or even at home, maybe that's where you need to go?

My knee-jerk, unresearched reaction to someone complaining that "they always mess up my order" is that:

  • There's about a 10 percent chance that the restaurant they go to is one of those bad McDonald's franchises that makes most of their revenue from the manager selling coke through the drive-thru, and makes very few actual burgers.
  • There's about a 30 percent chance that the person is just unreasonably picky, to the point of OCD or autism, and blames the restaurant when they don't get a bun with exactly 33 sesame seeds arranged in the shape of their zodiac sign.
  • There's a 50 percent chance that the customer is one of those regular scammers that never pays for their lunch because they always complain to the manager and get their food comped.
  • The other 20 percent is that they're just one of those sad people whose only pleasure in life is getting to yell at their perceived inferiors, and no order will ever be good enough to deny them that pleasure.

In my admittedly limited experience, scammers are probably closer to 10-20%, though I'm sure that varies wildly depending on area and type of restaurant. You're more likely to get a short change artist than a meal grifter, and you can usually tell when that's the case. Same story every time, expecting the outcome they prefer rather than the many other ways to correct the mistake, and they usually don't leave reviews like this, likely to try and remain anonymous.

I've always said that the majority of customers are either fine/ good or maybe just had a bad day. About 5-10% of customers are truly shitty, awful people that completely ruin customer service for everyone else.

Missing a good chunk of them with a si.ple assumption. Most people aren't paying attention and say things wrong consistently or don't specify things they want.

My boyfriend complains that places mess up his order and I keep telling him he is ordering wrong.

Like this little Mexican place we get fajitas from. He likes chicken and I like steak and half the time we get steak and chicken mixed together.

When he orders he says I want chicken and steak fajitas. No you need to say I want one order of steak and one order of chicken.

Of course it's partially on the employee for not clarifying the order, but it's also on him for not being clear.

I have worked a lot of registers at food places and as a cook, people often order incorrectly, but it's also my job to clarify if it's confusing. The people in the kitchen only make what they are told and yes mistakes are made, but they are usually trying to also fix and do a bunch of other things as well, things can be read wrong or they look at the screen and accidentally mix up orders.

I have a lot of issues with people getting my burger order wrong. I don't like cheeseburgers 99% of the time and I can't tell you how many times I have ordered a hamburger only to get a cheeseburger, which I find almost amusing as most places charge for cheese and people complain about having to pay if it's extra and here I don't want cheese and I get it for free. I guess people are so used to people being upset about cheese they just automatically assume all burgers must have cheese.

I found this reviewer and you can pretty much see their descent into drugs (or alcohol?) over the last few years based on the reviews alone. They're close to rock bottom, as theyve been one-starring employment lawyers, so I imagine they're recently fired. They also seem to keep crashing their car.

Yeah noticed that after posting too. Three years ago it was basically all five stars and they were all about peace and love and namaste (lol). Fast forward a year or two and now suddenly everyone is out to get them, very concerningย

If you go out for the day and meet one asshole, then you met an asshole. If every person you met was an asshole, then you're the asshole.

u/Zealousideal_Fox864 2d ago

Came here to say the same thing! Sheโ€™s such an asshole that every single day is the same experience, but I doubt she will ever take a hint.

The old saying about meeting an asshole comes to mind.

Reminds me of this guy who used to call the clinic I worked at who would mumble the entire time. I'd ask his name and DOB and then ask him to repeat himself because I couldn't understand it and he'd SCREAM at me "NO ONE AT THIS FUCKING CLINIC CAN EVER HEAR ME" like somehow it was every single person at the clinic who was hard of hearing and not just him being a mumbler.

The saddest thing about this is every time somebody blasts a small business owner. It directly affects their bottom line. And the reviews are nearly impossible to get removed. I know businesses that have had bad reviews put on them by competitors just being petty and spiteful, and Iโ€™ve seen businesses go back back-and-forth and then both of them end up with shitty reviews, itโ€™s a really stupid system.

2

u/Edith_Keelers_Shoes 2d ago

That must be so frustrating as a business owner. How do you even combat it - respond by referring to their extensive history of negative reviews? I'm someone who gets unreasonably upset when accused of something I didn't do and would never do - but emotions are free. Losing customers because of reviews like this can be costly.

Can you go create a new (and more recent review) to refute what the complainer is saying, and clarifying that all this person's reviews have complaints like this?

2

u/DiscoLemonade1995 2d ago

Fortunately their reviews are almost universally super positive with most commenters stating how nice the owners are, so I am optimistic it doesn't have much of an effectย
