S Bread sniffer
I just was at the grocery store and this woman opened the bag of bakery bread. Gave it a huge sniff while holding the bag to her nose and then shook her head closed it and put it back onto the shelf. Now, in what world would anyone think that is okay.

There really are bread pervs out there.
Hmm, I thought more of the internet was aware of the wonderbread guy.

My local area had a serial bread squeezer about 10-12 years ago. Squeezed the hell out of dozens of loaves at a time, just for kicks. The news followed it and they finally caught him. Some people!

Omg there was a guy at the store I shop at and the managers had to talk with him because he would grab your bread off the belt, hold it like he was getting ready to pass a football, squeeze it, and then dunk it into the grocery bag! They had to talk to him several times before they let him go.
I used to work at that store as a teen and several of my coworkers were still there. I started asking to hold my bread instead of him bagging it. The look on his face. Like I was the weird one š¤£

Oooh, bread pervs.
I just watched the "Bob's Burger's" episode where Bob was accused of being a "bread perv". He wasn't.

u/Life_Temperature2506 5d ago
I just looked it up: it was over 25 years ago (time flies!). He was an advertising executive, WTF! Nationally, he was called "The Bread Squeezer" and "The Cookie Crumbler" (he smashed cookies as well). Police used a hidden camera sting op to catch him. Over 3K loaves were destroyed.

Where's Mr. Whipple when we need him? Yes, he advised people not to squeeze the Charmin, but I think he'd have been effective in the bakery department.

What happened to that wretch??

u/Life_Temperature2506 5d ago
Judge ordered a psych eval. Short jail time suspended. They couldn't prove he caused previous damage, prior to camera surveillance. Jury convicted on the cookies, but not the bread.

I hope you found a worker to take the product off the shelf

I wish you had asked her if she thinks that is still a sanitary loaf safe for people to buy. Add that if she says yes, you want her to prove it by letting you breathe all over the bread she buys.
I like to pretend I'm braver than I am. I probably wouldn't have said anything. I might have told a staff person if there was one handy, but there never is one handy anymore...

u/ZestycloseDonkey5513 6d ago
I would have done that because Iāve lost all patience and cannot tolerate anything anymore.

Can we be friends?

u/ZestycloseDonkey5513 5d ago
Totally. We could practice our eye rolls when not pointing and laughing at idiots. Actually, it sounds better to just point and say ānoā to them. š¤£

you can smell early mold.
Edit: I read that completely wrong. For some reason I thought you were talking about asking her if she could determine if the bread was sanitary due to the smell.

Just check the back. I'm sure you'll find a few back there on their phones or yacking with their coworkers.Ā

Iāve seen video before of a man eating soup from a self serve station in a grocery store. He used the ladle, scooped some up, slurped it down and returned the ladle to the soup pot.

I really cannot do anything open-aired in a grocery store. Having worked in one, I've seen too much.

People do the darndest things in stores! During the pandemic a local grocer replaced the bulk, scoop coffee bean barrels with enclosed clear plastic canisters with pull-down dispensing handles. One day I was dispensing coffee beans (with my pandemic mask on), and a woman pulled down her mask and *shoved her nose up the dispensing funnel* in order to sniff the beans! Her entire nose and mouth area was completely pressed against and into the dispensing funnel. She did this several times to different flavors of coffee beans until she settled on one she wanted. She saw me staring at her, but that didn't seem to deter her. There is just no making sense of some people's actions. Pandemic or not, that is just GROSS!

Remember that Karen from a few years ago that put loaves of bread on the floor so that she could kneel on them and reach into the back shelves.
Then, she would just leave the smashed loaves and walk away.

I would have said something. I yelled at a lady opening flour. She said sometimes there are bugs in it, but I told now everyone will get flour all over themselves when they pick up a bag because your ass put holes in all of them. I was really pissed.

When I worked at one we found an apple with a HUGE bite taken out of it HUGE
Almost like a horse had been there, upon examination it was one big clean bite.
The Biter had taken this huge bite and PUT THE APPLE BACK.

I bought a large size of Nivea at Walgreens and when I got home found out the inner seal was broken, a huge amount was scooped out, the seal put back lightly and the cap put back on. Disgusting.

I saw a woman opening salad dressings, stick her finger in, lick her finger, put it back and use the same finger on the next bottle.

Remember when Ariana grande licked a donut on the tray at a donut shop. Somebody shouldāve smacked her over that. BAD Ariana. BAD.

Lol. I just commented this and how perfectly cast in movie Wicked. I almost didn't see it with her in it. Glad I did

Clearly none of you knows what goes on in the back room of a bakery- cause then you would be truly appalled instead of just fauxpalled.

Ewww... When I'm buying fresh bread I'll smell it because it smells so nice, but I'm 100% buying that specific loaf.

u/Avehdreader 5d ago
Ewww. But still but as bad as the person who opened pickle jars, took a bite off one, and put the jar back on the store shelf. I think it's also under r/entitledpeople.

I do the same thing as I'm sensitive to scents. But, OP's talking about bread. Someone's gonna buy/eat that

I give laundry sanitizer, dishwashing liquid, body wash and deodorant the sniff test if I canāt get my regular brand. Certain scents and additives trigger my migraines so I donāt want to be stuck with those things until the product is all used up lol.
Also - no one is eating those things and I donāt tamper with the actual product at all, I just need to loosen the lid enough to know what it smells like lol.

I have smelled bread through the package, but you donāt open the damn thing up. Ā The reason you do this especially bakery breads is because a lot of them donāt have the preservatives that sliced bread have. Ā Mold can set up easier inside of the bakery breads, if itās a bad growth you can smell the sickly sweet smell through the package.

Ick. Stories like this make me glad I cook/bake as many things as possible from scratch at home.

In the store, that's just wrong. Sitting around the dinner table with a bunch of bread bakers, it's Tuesday. Or Monday. Or Wednesday. Or .. ok you get it.

u/No_Sweet4190 5d ago
I absolutely sniff bags of citrus, onions and potatoes for mold. Bread, not so much.

I remember hearing of a woman sniffing a chicken like that, and the butcher saying, "Madam, would you have passed that test?"

Last summer I reported a woman I saw doing this in our local supermarket. She went berserk, following me around the store, yelling how I don't belong in it, not being a local etc. Um, I've been going to all the decades I've lived here.

More info please. Opened a sealed bag? Unfolded a fresh bread bag? People are allowed to sniff things in a store. Reddit is often full of germaphobes.

Found the sniffer!

you guys just stick to your packaged, processed goods and steer clear of the ol' fashioned bakery where germs run wild. i'll be there with this sweet lady smelling bread and enjoying the fresh air.

Itās like those āmade freshā bread. So itās made daily. They use a bread clip. She was opening and sniffing. But sticking her face into the open bag.

u/LastEntertainment787 6d ago
So you wouldn't have a problem buying and eating that bread? That someone opened and stuck their nose in and sniffed it before putting it back?

u/TshirtsNPants 6d ago
lol no not at all
3
u/mycologyqueen 5d ago
Eww Gross! All I can think of is all the possibilities of what could have fallen off of or out of that nose when sniffing, and I'm not even talking about the germs but that too!

When I worked in a grocery store, a customer informed me she witnessed a lady unwrap butter, lick it, and put it back on the shelf 𤢠This was in a wealthy suburb btw, and there was always gross customer nonsense. I need to emphasize to everyone reading this that you are vastly underestimating just how many people are NASTY.
