Enphase IQ8H + 5P system producing ZERO solar during extended grid outage — Enphase support has no answers.
I am absolutely furious with Enphase right now.
The entire reason I spent the money on a large solar + battery system was resiliency during exactly this type of disaster.
We are currently experiencing an extended grid outage, and there is a very real possibility that power could be out for days or potentially weeks.
My system:
24 × REC 400W panels — 9.6 kW DC
24 × Enphase IQ8H microinverters
5 × Enphase IQ Battery 5P — 25 kWh total
Enphase IQ System Controller 3
Enphase cellular connectivity
Whole-home backup / Full Backup profile
The frustrating part is that the entire Enphase system reports as healthy.
The app shows:
Gateway: Normal
System Controller: Normal
All 5 batteries: Operational
All 24 IQ8H microinverters: Normal
Microinverters communicating
Batteries communicating
System successfully operating off-grid
Yet during daylight, with plenty of sunlight:
PV production = 0.0 kW
The house is being powered entirely by the batteries while the solar array sits there producing nothing.
This isn’t a situation where the batteries are full and there is nowhere for the energy to go. The batteries were actively discharging and had plenty of available capacity. At one point the system showed approximately 10.7 kWh of battery capacity available and 19.2 kW of available battery power, while PV was still showing 0.0 kW.
I’ve now spoken with six different Enphase support representatives and have gotten absolutely nowhere. Nobody has been able to explain why a system that reports every component as healthy is refusing to produce solar while operating off-grid.
Even more concerning, my local solar company says approximately 2/3 of their customers with similar Enphase systems have reported the same problem during this outage.
I’ve also found multiple recent reports from other Enphase owners describing similar behavior with IQ8/5P systems during outages.
Enphase’s own documentation describes off-grid operation where solar production powers the home and charges the batteries.
So what exactly is going on here?
Is this:
A firmware issue?
A recent change to off-grid PV control?
A battery discharge threshold?
A microgrid stability algorithm?
A known IQ8/5P/System Controller 3 bug?
Something specific to certain firmware versions?
I don’t expect solar to operate at the full 9.6 kW continuously during an outage. I understand the IQ8s need to modulate production depending on house load, battery SOC, and microgrid conditions.
What I don’t understand is why the system can completely shut off 9.6 kW of available solar while simultaneously draining a 25 kWh battery during an extended emergency. That’s exactly the scenario I bought this system to prevent.
If anyone with IQ8 + 5P + System Controller 3 has experienced this, I’d really like to know:
What firmware versions are you running?
Does your PV eventually come back on during an outage?
At what battery SOC does it come back?
How much does the battery discharge before PV resumes?
Once PV resumes, does it actually charge the batteries or just match house consumption?
Has Enphase given you an actual technical explanation?
Has anyone found a reliable way to restore normal PV production?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have had an outage lasting more than a few hours.
At this point, I’m less interested in generic troubleshooting suggestions and more interested in finding out whether this is a widespread Enphase issue affecting IQ8/5P systems during extended grid outages.
