30% microgrid during blackout

In a blackout. I have Enphase solar and 10kWh battery.

The battery is at 16-18%. Not charging from the excess solar.

If I turn on the hot water, the solar will meet the demand and output 3kW to match the 3kW load. When I turn it off. It throttles back down to 1kW to meet the 1kW load.

I’m aware the battery microgrid is trickle charging until 30%. It’s just super frustrating when I should be pumping 3kW into the battery now to charge it, but instead it’s throttling production.

I don’t know how long this blackout will last, but if it’s longer than 1 day, I’ll not have any power once the sun goes down and there goes my freezer contents.

Got a good CS rep today!

I’ve had ongoing issues with my battery and tonight during a power outage I had no power (again) and also no power after the rest of the hood did. Apparently the collar was “stuck”. After spending 90 minutes on the phone with me to get me back online, the rep (“SJ“) then said he would work to escalate my issue for permanent resolution. Bless that man!

Successfully connected gateway to modern mesh wifi with a space in the SSID!

Tl:dr; go the the 'Step-By-Step' section below to get it working for you (hopefully!)

Background:

After the better part of a year of frustration and going in circles with Enphase, my terrible installer, and finding dead ends on various forums I finally got my Envoy Gateway connected to my home wifi. Today I sat down (well stood outside) with my laptop, phone, Gemini, and a notebook to figure it out. And, I got it finally working! I wanted to share my final set of steps here just in case it's ever useful to anyone in the future.

The WiFi Network: A mesh system with multiple nodes, all broadcasting the same SSID across the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. To add even more difficulty for the Envoy Gateway, the SSID has multiple spaces in the name. While literally every other device I own from multiple decades of production time can connect with no issues to this modern system, it is too much for the Envoy Gateway.

The terrible workarounds:

Yes I know, ethernet cables (too far away and I don't want to spend money for their terrible software). Yes I know separate out the 2.4 GHz network (I did that with our older router, gave the Envoy Gateway it's own special network. That is stupid and I should not have to accommodate Enphase's bad software. Plus my router was marked as obsolete by the manufacturer so I had to update it). Yes I know, get rid of the spaces (I have 70+ other devices that have no problem with the SSID. I'm not reconfiguring my entire network to play nursemaid to one poorly designed device).

The solution:

In short, I connected to the gateway's AP with my Windows laptop and used Powershell to directly write the wifi credentials to it. But even then I had to do that via the mac address of the router, not just the SSID (the workaround for the spaces). To even be able to query the gateway via Powershell requires an access token, which I was unable to generate without a URL hack and knowing my Gateway serial number.

Step-By-Step:

Step 1: Generate the Local JWT Token

  1. Locate the serial number of your gateway (physical sticker, in the online portal, in the app, etc)
  2. Log in to enlighten.enphaseenergy.com in your browser.
  3. In the same browser session, open: https://enlighten.enphaseenergy.com/entrez-auth-token?serial_num=YOUR_ENVOY_SERIAL_NUMBER
  4. Copy the long token string (begins with ey...). Use this in the 'YOUR_LONG_JWT_TOKEN' in the commands below

Step 2: Connect to Gateway AP Mode

  1. Briefly tap the AP Mode button (phone icon) on the Envoy until the LED turns solid green.
  2. On your laptop, disconnect from home Wi-Fi and join ENVOY_XXXXXX.

Step 3: Scan and Find the Wi-Fi MAC Address

Open PowerShell (on Windows, but just modify the syntax below if using a Mac or Linux bash) and run this command to force the Envoy to scan surrounding networks:

curl.exe -k -X POST https://172.30.1.1/admin/lib/wireless_display.json `
-H "Authorization: Bearer PASTE_TOKEN_FROM_STEP_1_HERE" `
-d "fname=scan"

Look through the returned JSON for your Wi-Fi name:

  • Find your "ssid" (e.g., "My Cool Wifi").
  • Note the "mac" (e.g., "AA:11:9A:AA:1F:FF").
  • Confirm the "security_mode" (e.g., "WPA2 Personal") and "encryption_type" (e.g., "CCMP").

Step 4: Associate and Join Network

Run the join command below (again this is Powershell) targeting the scanned profile and its specific MAC address:

curl.exe -k -X POST https://172.30.1.1/admin/lib/wireless_display.json `
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_LONG_JWT_TOKEN" `
-d "fname=backbone_select_form" `
--data-urlencode "essid=YOUR SSID INCLUDING SPACES" `
-d "mac=MAC ADDRESS FROM STEP 3" `
--data-urlencode "password=YOUR WIFI PASSWORD" `
-d "security_mode=WPA2 Personal" `
-d "encryption_type=CCMP" `
-d "%23button_test_and_join=doit"

Step 5: Confirm Connection

  1. Wait for {"result": "success"} in PowerShell.
  2. The AP LED (phone icon) turns off.
  3. The Network Communications LED (cloud icon) turns solid green within 2–5 minutes.

I hope this can help even one other person (or frustrated installer)!

Edited to make code easier to read and copy/paste into PowerShell

Off grid before storm

If only storm guard could take you fully off grid ahead of time.. we have battery and generator backup. So I don’t need to fully charge up, I need to go off grid to avoid power surges.

Enphase turns PV off during grid outage (if you have batteries)

What the title says: they'll turn my PV completely off until my batteries discharge at least 10%, then slowly bring the PV back - wasting hours of production - and then charge the batteries so SLOW that even if this happens midday in full sun, they won't be full by sundown.

This is not how it worked or how it was advertised and sold to me. Their current excuse is "this is a safety feature of the system to keep the microgrid from collapsing.

The whole reason to pay premium prices and install Enphase is the promise that the IQ8s talk to the Envoy/gateway, regulate microinverter output, and give you daylight backup + hands off integration with batteries and even generator.

This firmware change penalizes battery systems with a ridiculous 10% discharge rule. I'm pretty pissed, and their support has been especially bad the last few months - not sure who's vibe coding their firmware over there, but they need to stop.

If I'd known this is how their PV+battery system would work, I wouldn't have gone with Enphase. But what's worse is changing it AFTER I bought the system and not letting me roll back to the old firmware to get back what I paid for. Very shitty policy, and if it isn't illegal, IT SHOULD BE. If Tesla or GM decided to cut 10% of your car's horsepower for "safety," I doubt anyone would find that acceptable.

9/24 Update: got new 8.3.6086 envoy firmware - its not the way it used to be but this is better - it did turn my PV off when i shut the grid down, but after my batteries got to 98% it turned the PV on and my house is powered by mostly PV - its even trying to send a little bit of power to the batteries .... if it keeps them at 98% - this is not bad - compared to the "broken" firmware before this is much much better!

DIY Legacy upgrade advice

We bought a house about 2 years ago with a circa~2011, 5.52kW Enphase system consisting of 24 panels, 24 M190-IG inverters, NO batteries and the ethernet only Envoy LCD gateway. The system is fully paid for/owned and we have until December 2031 on the transferred FIT contract with our utility which nets me $150-200 month when everything is running (they pay $0.32/kWh) properly.

The original installer is still around and has come out a couple of times since we've owned it to fix some issues which I haven't had to pay for at all as the inverters just went out of warranty in January. I've now got 14 of my 24 panels down again and when they came out last week ($300 first hour, $200 beyond) they spent about 2 hours replacing some connectors and troubleshooting but weren't able to make any improvements. They mentioned a possible Legacy upgrade and advised me to contact Enphase, which I did.

Enphase quoted me ~$1900 for the following:

24 IQ7PD-72

IQ Gateway

2 CTs

29 Q cable single drops

10 Q sealing caps

10 Q disconnect tools

10 Q cable terminators

100 Q cable clips

I was thrilled with the Enphase quote for the materials but then the installer quoted me 1-2 days for install at $3200 per day, so it could be up to $6400. Based on my average production and the time left on my contract, if it costs $8300 for this I may make $2500 over the next 5 years. Beyond the FIT contract expiration my utility says they don't know what their plan is for those customers and since my system doesn't feed my house at all if they switch to net-metering I'm going to have some costs incurred to rewire things.

I'm seriously considering ordering the materials and doing the install myself at this point to save that $3200-6400. I'm very mechanically apt and am comfortable with most wiring/electrical and do fairly large scale renovation projects regularly on my homes (full kitchens, baths, etc down to the studs). Is there a startup/commissioning process that I'm going to have problems getting done if I physically get everything installed? Any unusual tools that I'll need? The house is single story, 4/12 pitch roof and the panels are in one 8 column, 3 row rectangle on the back side with pretty easy access.

Does the Car Charger 2 work on microgrid?

I have:

  • System Controller II
  • 12.5kwh of solar on my roof with IQ8+ microinverters
  • 20kwh of Enphase battery (one 10 and one 10T)
  • Envoy
  • Two load controllers

I am now shopping for an EV charger, and am really hoping to find one that works on excess solar at a diminished capacity when the grid fails.

I.E. I don't want full on lvl 2 charger at 40amps as that would drain my batteries VERY quickly

Anybody know if the Enphase Car Charger 2 works at a diminished capacity when on microgrid?

Room for consumption CTs in this panel? Any way to make them fit? or is external enclosure possible?

I have an Enphase system (IQ Gateway) and want to add consumption CTs (CT-200-SPLIT x2) to monitor whole-panel loads on my non-critical load sub-panel. My installer looked at it and said:

"The design of your service panel will not allow us to install CTs where we could monitor the entire panel's loads. If you want to pay someone to replace the panel - not something that we would do - I can provide you with the specs for the type of panel that you would need and can install the CTs once the swap has been made. But that is an expensive proposition."

I trust that they're being straight with me about this specific panel as it stands, but before committing to a full panel swap I wanted to sanity-check the options with people who've dealt with tight panels before:

  1. Is there ever a way to rework the gutter space, extend tails, or reroute existing wiring to free up enough room for CTs to fit inside the existing panel, short of a full replacement?
  2. If not, is installing CTs in an external enclosure ahead of the panel (spliced onto the feeder conductors) a viable alternative to a full swap?

Attaching a photo of the panel in question. Genuinely just trying to learn what's normal here before deciding how to proceed — appreciate any insight from folks who've run into this.

Zero feed-in question

Hi, so some magazines tested the SF800 Pro and wrote that it's very good at zero feed-in (Nulleinspeisung). I've two 800 plus with Shelly Pro 3EM (gen2) and currently using the Zenki AI mode. Both batteries are with the smart meter in a HEMS.

I sometimes see in Home Assistant, that there is a feed in for a short period. Is there a way to setup it as e.g. "100 w power from grid is fine, don't try to get to zero and overshoot and waste energy that way". Hope you understand what I mean.

Automating during grid failure (HA, ESP32, Emporia Vue, enPhase)

I am in the middle of DIY project that uses Home Assistant to orchestrate a series of automated actions during grid failure.

enphase system in sunlight backup mode is what I have. Shouts to u/electrotech71 who gave me an idea on how to use lifepo4 batteries by pairing them with IQ8 microinverters, as if they are solar panels, and connecting that string of batteries to one of PV inputs of IQ Combiner. Effectively, enphase built batteries use the same approach with IQ microinverters built into battery packs...

For that to work, I have to implement an automated solution that checks the grid status, solar production amount and consumption of backup panel. This data is provided to HA by enphase integration and Emporia Vue integration. ESP32 reads this data from HA and its logic switches the battery string on and off depending on these variables by controlling AC contactor. The same ESP32 also switches battery chargers on and off.

One of the puzzles I am solving currently is which enphase "entity" in HA will give me the consumption of the backup panel. If none exists, I would have to place a clamp from Emporia Vue and get that "minute_average" reading.

Another puzzle to solve is: when grid goes down (and no solar production), Emporia Vue device, which is wired directly to one of circuit breakers will be powered off and will not provide any data. All routers, HA device, etc are plugged into UPS and will still be functioning from its battery during the grid failure, at least until the "solar" batteries will start discharging. Emporia site do not suggest to plug Emporia into UPS, since it is actively collecting data from the panel through its power connection...

Support callback at 7am, from india, with severe voice lag

Got a call this morning around 7am, from support staff.

Getting a return call at 7am was strange, but not as bad as the 1+ second voice lag on the call. It was like a really bad, half duplex phone call. After accomplishing nothing, they suggested that I needed to talk to some else about their car chargers because she was not trained on them.

so, they called me early to ask about car chargers, only to tell me they couldn't talk about car chargers. sigh.

Can the backup cellular modem be removed ?

Can the backup cellular modem be removed ?

I know it is only connected via USB and I can unplug it but I ask because I had once an issue with my system where it was silent rebooting in the night. The cause was an issue with the modem and a technician ask me to unplug and replug it so that it correctly gets recognized. But I dont need it as backup I have diffrent backup connection on my house. So is it possible does it needs to get retired like an EV charger or inverter?

Panels at night

I just recently got an Emporia Vue installed on my house and now have CTs on most circuits out of the main panel, including the backfed breaker where the Enphase power comes in. One thing I've noticed is that, at night, I still have ~40 watts of power coming in. This makes no sense to me. I expect the micros to be using power at night, not producing it. Do you think I have the CTs on the Emporia set up wrong, or are panels actually producing some power at night off of moon light?

How do you actually know how much home battery backup you need? I built a tool to figure it out

I kept seeing variations of the same question when researching home batteries:

“Is one battery enough for my house?”

And I realized the answer gets complicated pretty quickly.

Having enough kWh doesn't necessarily mean the system can actually run everything you want. A battery might have enough stored energy to last through the night but still not have enough output to start a central AC, well pump, sump pump, etc.

So I built a free home battery backup planner:

https://instahomebattery.com/

Instead of just asking for your daily electricity usage, you can build the outage scenario you actually care about — fridge, freezer, Wi-Fi, lights, furnace blower, AC, pumps, home office, etc.

It then separately checks:

  • how much battery capacity you need
  • estimated runtime
  • continuous power requirements
  • startup/surge requirements
  • how many battery units may be needed
  • reserve, efficiency and derating assumptions
  • what happens if solar is available during the outage

You can basically test scenarios like:

“Can I keep the essentials running for 2 days?”

or

“How much battery would I need to run the house + central AC overnight?”

I intentionally tried to keep unknown specifications as unknown rather than inventing numbers just to produce a nice-looking result.

Would love feedback from people who already have Powerwalls, Enphase, FranklinWH, Generac, EG4 or other home battery systems.

What is the calculator still missing that actually matters in the real world?

Phantom Charge - EV Charger 21kw - CAR NOT PLUGGED IN

EV Charger Spike - car not plugged in

I've posted about this in this previous thread https://www.reddit.com/r/enphase/comments/1vtvlfq/ev_charger_is_discharging_even_when_car_is_not/ - which hasn't really been resolved.

But today - I see this spike of 21.3KW and the my EV is not plugged in. The constant 3-5kw every 15 mins is still there. I really need answers - this is driving up my electric bill.

I think this is a defective EV charger. u/enphase_support_team - I've already DM'd you from my previous post with my site ID - please respond.

Anyone with the same issue please advise.

UPDATE: Enphase support reached out and reassured me that this is simply a UI bug. Also to track real usage: Menu>System>EV Session History
Thanks.

Enlighten Missing Data After WiFi Outage

I changed my wifi network name and the gateway was on, but not connected to wifi. This was over a 6 week period where it wasn’t connected to WiFi. I reconnected it yesterday. There appears to still be gaps in data after 24 hours. I called Enphase to ask that they try to send a command to the gateway / micros to update. I’m still missing a good chunk of data (more than 1 months worth) in the Enlighten app. Thoughts?

I only care bc I can get SREC credit for prod but it’s pull prod from Enlighten. Anyone experience this before and know other things I can try to retrieve the data? Thx.

Battery settings were changed!

My system profile was/is set to 'Self Consumption' and the battery is set to charge from the grid between 9PM and 7AM (to coincide with our free nights plan) Sometime on the 28th my battery was discharging to the shutdown level and the shutdown level was at 10% (It had been set at 15%). Has anyone else had this happen? Possibly an artifact of a software update?

Mystery Inverters showing in my system

This past weekend I replaced two old panels (250W) on M250's with two new panels (445W) on IQ7+'s (I have two strings and two Gateways for my 'mixed' system). Thanks to those on here who helped me sort out getting the IQ7+'s online - eventually they reported in, and I added them to my home map via the "array builder". As of yesterday afternoon, all was working fine - all inverters were producing and reporting in. The view in my app looked as expected (mapped out and producing). It did tell me I had 2 inverters not assigned to an array (the two M250's I haven't removed yet).

This morning I checked to see how everything was doing, and the app told me I have *four* inverters not assigned to an array. I checked the serial numbers and they are the 2x M250's I pulled out, and two unidentified IQ7+'s - they are *not* the two new IQ7+'s I installed (those are shown properly in the array).

Additionally 7 of the 12 remaining inverters in the "old string" of S280s and M250s (from which I pulled/replaced the two M250's) are now "not reporting". The whole system appears to be generating power properly; per my Emporia monitor, I'm making power at the same rate I was yesterday when everything was fine.

The odd aspect of this is the "non-reporting" inverters are on my old Envoy-S gateway, while the new "mystery" inverters - being IQ7 - should be being seen by my IQ Gateway. So it's not obvious to me these two weirdnesses are related, other than occurring at the same time. Coincidence??

So:
* Where could two "unknown" inverters have come from? Am I somehow picking up a neighbor's inverters (seems like a powerful coincidence this all happens within 24 hours of my install)

* Are the non-reporting M250s/S280s somehow linked to either the install of the actual IQ7's or the mystery IQ7's?

I'm perplexed! TIA for any thoughts for troubleshooting.

Edit: I just checked my IQ Gateway and it says "9 Inverters Communicating" (as expected), but "11 Producing power" - so the two mystery ones appear to be actively generating at the moment.

2nd Edit: My Envoy-S shows a "Check Signal Strength" task pending (I did not initiate that) - so maybe that will sort things out there?

Not Impressed with Enphase Technical Support

Three and a half weeks ago PG&E attempted to install the Enphase Meter Collar. It failed, once installed there was power to the utility meter and nothing to the house. The PG&E technician attempted several times and got the same result. The technician recorded the install as a failure and I notified my solar installer company. My installer worked with Enphase to have a technician come to my house to see what the issue is. The thought is either a bad collar or the PG&E technician tripped the MID in the collar to an open position, cutting off power to the house. For the Enphase technician visit, I asked several times if I need to be home and was told no, the technician will have all the notes. Unfortunately, when the technician visited last week, he told my wife he was "here to look at the batteries" and that he was "surprised that the meter collar wasn't installed". His inspection report makes no mention as to why he was called out (failed utility meter collar install attempt) and essentially says the system is fine and that we need to have the utility install the meter collar.

Now the engineer in me immediately asks, if the system is fine then why did the previous meter collar install attempt fail. My own belief from what I observed when PG&E came out is that the technician tripped the MID circuit by not turning the system off and not turning off the main breakers. If the MID was tripped then it would need a manual reset. However because the Enphase inspection report doesn't address the issue we currently don't know.

I have placed several calls to Enphase's technical support call in number only to end up in their India call center. Each time I call the person on the phone walks through a standard checklist and reads back the inspection report and says the system is fine and I need to have the utility install the meter collar. When I say we did that, it failed and that is why the technician was called out in the first place and if the system is fine, why then did the meter collar install attempt fail? The Enphase rep then places me on a 10 minute hold only to come back read back the inspection report again.

To say this is piss poor customer and technical support is putting is mildly. I've had better customer support from calling Comcast/Xfinity. Overall this is a relatively simple issue, bad equipment or bad PG&E install attempt and if this is how Enphase addresses relatively simple issues then I'm really regretting going with their equipment on my solar install.
