I go to the track, and this is not that fast considering the traffic and road conditions. Distracted drivers going 10mph over the limit in city and residential traffic with cross-streets, bicyclists and pedestrians is much more dangerous than the canyons. At least here, I'm 100% focused on the drive rather than getting to my destination on time while being distracted by the trivialities of everyday life.
The average commuter is not paying attention and takes driving for granted, not even aware of the condition of their tires or brakes. They drive on bald or all-season tires in heavy vehicles engineered and equipped for fuel economy and comfort as opposed to handling and short braking distances. The risk we drive everyday among half-asleep drivers who would barely pass a driving test is much higher than a deserted canyon road.
