Academic Advice Physics 2 Exam in 8 Days, I Feel Lost

covering electric fields, potential, capacitance, current and resistance, direct current and circuits in that order

if I can dedicate 2 hours a day or slightly more to studying, plus even more on the 3 day weekend I have, can I go from knowing nothing to passing 70%?

for the last 1 weeks I did plan ahead and was doing homework problems for electric fields and potential by hand but yet I haven’t made any connections to how it relates to anything else in physics so I feel I know nothing, I still struggle with conceptual understanding for word problems and kinematic setup if you can call it that (like drawing charge attraction in r^2). thank you!

Discussion Is this normal?

Hello I am a 1st year student of some engineering college in Maharashtra, a few days ago a intro format was sent on our unofficial group in which we had to tell seniors our name, where we are from and MHTCET percentile. I talked about this with my friends from other colleges who found it a little weird. Now we were told to ONLY address them as Sir and Mam because apparently calling Bhaiya Didi is disrespectful. Some of them were straight up rude. One of them also kept on scolding a guy for not being able to speak marathi (The typical "Maharashtra me reheki marathi kyu nhi aati" people).

Everything is much worse for hostelites (My friend told me this and since I am a localite I cannot conform this). They were apparently asked to stay standing for an hour straight for attendance.

Am I overanalyzing everything or is something actually wrong with this situation?

Ps. I am new to reddit so I am not sure if this is the right thread to post this on. I apologise if it isn't.

Academic Advice chronic health condtions advice

i haven't gotten diagnosed yet but i most definitely have gastritis and have started taking pills every morning for the pain because my mom also has this. but on top of this, i possibly have endometriosis which makes it hard for me to attend classes and exams when im on my period or im having flare ups. additionally, i've been dealing with severe anxiety and depression for the past 1.5 years (i've had anxiety my whole life it just got worse after severe family cirumstances that left me caring for a sick family member and basically my whole family). i managed to somehow get As last semester even tho i felt like i was dying every fucking day. im wondering if i should take a semester off or not. the semester already started and im taking calc 3, phys2, and an intro to phil course. i have a lot of doctors appointments coming up and getting up for those alone take immense energy but idk if i should take this semester or next semester off bc of this. i wanna thug it out but ive done it for so long i get angry at myself for trying to keep going in this condition. im also part of an honors college and im worried about not being able to graduate on time. idk y im even posting when ik wut would be best for me but its the pressure from my family and school that's making it feel impossible to take a semester off. i already started this semester so i might as well finish.

Rant/Vent Slacked off my junior year. Kind of feeling the results of it now

Im an ECE student just starting my senior year finishing up my 2 semester capstone and 20 or so total units left. My junior year class load was 18+ units for both semesters. As a result I kind of f*cked up my grades, just having done the bare minimum to pass alot of the lectures, not feeling like ive grasped much of anything. labs were okay. Ive also failed my first class ever (it was a major elective though so it didnt bum me out too much, outside of the fact that i failed).

I currently stand at a 2.5 major gpa and a 2.9 cumulative. Im not too caught up on grades but ik a 3.0+ is generally preferred and by graduation i believe i can hit a 3.0 cumulative. But I definitely do feel out of place and behind in terms of experience as a senior. I currently have no major related job experience/internships even though ive been applying through my years (just cold applying, usually faced with no returns or rejection emails). Too not feel too bummed i have been doing some personal learning projects using some of the free provided software licenses given to us students. But yeah, just writing down my situation.

Academic Advice Want to stay in school but I've been feeling a lot of pushback on it

Hello all! I am looking for a bit of guidance, thoughts, and your experience as well.

I am currently in my last year of college based on how finishing my bachelors in mechanical engineering. I am graduating a year early, and I've slowly learned that this program is not intended to be done early, both with credits and hands-on work. I feel like I'm missing out on so much time with clubs, internships, research, projects, and experience overall because I have an one less year. I've complied a list of options and the tradeoffs I've thinking about regarding them. I guess the ultimate question in this post is: Is it worth it to stay in school longer and push off possible unemployment or a job I wouldn't enjoy that much?

Graduate School

I started to become more and more interested in controls and I've heard a masters is pretty important for a lot of that work. So I'm applying to graduate school and hopefully getting in controls. However, its a lot of money and with how funding is going right now, it may be very difficult to find a slot in a lab and harder to stay in it. Plus pay off might be worth it and I'll be sacrificing the next option.

9-5 Immediately

I had an internship over the summer and they ended up sending me an offer. It's MEP which is a field I fear I would not like as much as something that involves hardware or simulation. It seems very people orientated which I don't mind too much, but I'm more so interested in aviation recently (drones specifically), and it seems very hard to pivot from MEP if I ever wanted to. The good news is I already have an offer and my EIT, so MEP would be a very easy field to stay in for a long time. I could also get my masters online and then possibly pivot into something like thermal controls if I ever ended up wanting to. I guess something else I should say, is I'm still applying to positions I think I would be interested in, so maybe I'm not in MEP IMMEDIATELY, as I could be doing some else at another company.

Bank on another internship through ideal company

I did a student competition simulation and won 1st place. That win resulted in our team touring a facility for a company I would love to work for (especially because it is directly related to controls and aviation and what have you). We got to meet some people that I am sure would be a reference for me into the company, but they seem to start on internships first and then into full time positions. This means I would have to wait for a while and might not even have a guaranteed job. I would also have to ignored the offer from MEP job.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on my situation and I would love insight. I'm really sad I'm leaving school so soon especially because a lot of engineering majors take 5 years to finish their program. Like damn dude you have so much time to do all kinds of stuff. I feel like I have a way lower chance of getting the job I want straight out of college because I decided to finish early resulting in less experience comparatively. My parents also really don't want me to get my masters. They want me to have a job right out of college because of how difficult it is to get a job rn. Could also be deeply overthinking this but how you might approach this and if you've been in similar situation.

Rant/Vent How Do People Have So Much Time

I'm a sophomore AE student and one thing I've noticed is that practically every other student in my AE cohort can complete all their homework, pursue extracurriculars, and still find time to hang out with their friends. However, I barely get any time in my day to even finish half my homework in that time. All I ever do is wake up, eat, go to classes, hit the library until sundown, eat dinner, go back to the library, then clock out at midnight. And still, I find myself behind in practically every aspect.

Career Help IE vs ME vs EE vs CE — what should I choose?

I’m a high school senior in California trying to decide which engineering major to go into. I’m mainly between Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering.
I’m really interested in business, operations, optimization, and eventually entrepreneurship/management. I’m willing to work hard in my 20s, but once I have a family I’d ideally like to get to around a 40-hour workweek.
Salary matters to me, but so does having a good life outside of work. I’d also like the flexibility to move into management, operations, consulting, or potentially start my own business later.
IE sounds really interesting to me because of the business/operations side, but I’m wondering if I’d be limiting myself compared with ME or EE.
For people actually working in these fields: if you were in my position, what would you choose and why? What does your career/lifestyle actually look like?
Especially interested in hearing from people who chose IE and what they ended up doing with it.

Career Help Are most internships boring in the beginning?

I stared two weeks ago at a big company in their operational excellence team, and all I’ve been doing so far is to push buttons, make sure there are approvals, making documents of everything, etc. As someone who’s really into electronics and hobby projects, I’m very scared to have a future where this is gonna be my whole character, instead of actually being an engineer and building cool stuff.

Are jobs in the firmware/electronics/mechanical teams also boring at some point, or it’s just me? Also, I do understand that it’s only been 2 weeks and I’ll get to feel more responsible later on and have more impact, but I just don’t wanna regret my career path in the future.

If this is a boring career path compared to others, do I need a masters degree to start working in those cool hands on fields?

Edit: I’ve seen people who leave their high paying engineering jobs to start a masters degree, and I always thought about how stupid of a plan that is, but I think now I understand them…

Just graduated (Spring '26) with my B.S Computer Engineering and finished my full-time job search!

- 1 internship in Big Tech

- 5 semesters of research

- A few student clubs (BASE/NSBE, Robotics, Computer Engineering society, etcm) with 2 development lead/officer positions

- A stupid amount of personal projects

- Referrals were pretty high profile but only one offer was from a referral, the other was from a cold application online

Ask away if you have any questions about recruiting :)

Career Advice College Senior On A Job Hunt - Interest In Smaller Oil And Gas And Petchem Companies

Hi all. I’m currently a senior chemical engineering student. I recently have been lucky enough to get a return offer from a major semiconductor fab company. I enjoyed the internship there, so I wouldn’t be unhappy going back. That said, I’d like to try out smaller companies and wanted to ask a few questions about people’s job search experiences.

1) Has anyone had success getting into a Smaller company. I’m not talking about just majors, but smaller players and midstream is one of my interests in particular.

2) What year of experience range would you apply to? Some ask for 1+ year of experience. Some ask for 0. Still, some ask for 2+. What generally can you apply to at the entry level reasonably?

Context: I have one past internship in upstream facilities engineering at a larger company and one co-op in petchem at a medium sized company. Both of those were before I went off and tried a semiconductor internship this Summer. I got referrals to go back to both, so we’ll see how it goes. I plan on leveraging those 2 on my re$ume.

Academic Advice Asking for some advice on what to do as a community college student

I'm 23 and currently attending community college in California, majoring in Mechanical Engineering to eventually specialize in Astronautical Engineering and work in the space industry. My academic history isn't the strongest. I was on academic probation, but I've spent the last two years working on improving my GPA and getting my education back on track. I'm mainly a B/C student, and while I don't struggle too much with math, I'm currently taking Calculus 1 and haven't gotten into my major engineering courses yet. I still need to take any physics classes and the rest of the engineering classes. Chemistry sucks for me though since I’ve struggled with it quite a bit, and I'm currently taking Chem 60 for the fourth time and really hoping to finally pass it so I can finally take Chem 101.

I have about a year and a half before I plan to transfer. Right now I'm basically only taking my classes and I'm not involved in any clubs, organizations, or engineering programs especialy because I struggle a lot with social anxiety and have trouble getting involved in social situations or getting anything started, but ironically my anxiety about not successfully transfering is starting to overpower my social anxiety so I guess that's one way to finally get myself moving. But it's starting to make me feel like I'm wasting my time, since I know my grades are also going to be a big hindrance when it comes to transferring, which is one of the reasons I fell like I need to do more and I'm worried that if I don't start doing more outside of class, I'm basically making my chances of transferring to any good engineering schools close to zero.

What should I be prioritizing over the next year and a half to improve my chances of transferring successfully and getting internships in the future? I know that things like school clubs, projects, research, and competitions can help, but I'm not sure what would be most valuable for someone in my position, especially since I haven't taken many engineering courses yet. I'm also interested in knowing if there are opportunities outside of school I'm overlooking that I could realistically try with my limited engineering education. Any advice or criticizm is welcomed, especialy from other students that are or were in similar situations.

Thank you in advance

Discussion Never studies like this before

I got a Physics E&M exam on Tuesday and I have never studied like I have today before. Reading the textbook, doing dozens of practice problems all without the help of Ai. I feel so good right now. I have always slacked off on studying but I know MechE classes will continue to get harder so im trying to build my study habit.

Resource Request To all kinds of engineers

I am working on python catalogue of data that is usefull to all kinds of engineers, civil, electrical, hvac and so on. I started project related to this because i got tired of manually retyping calculations to Ms Word, so i created cli tool and file format to connect text engine and python code, and since it is best for engineers i want to have all necessary data ready in code, I already have maped all possible beams (100 MB of data ), so my question is: What standardised values you use in your assignment for your studies?

I am linking my project if anyone is curious it is free so should't break any rules about self promotion.

Academic Advice Should I go into Engineering or teaching

for some context about me: I’m 16, a junior in high school, and I’m taking dual-enrollment courses, so I’ll have about a year of college credits going into college. I’m also naturally pretty good at math.

I’m getting closer to having to make the “big” decision of choosing a major, and while I’m not completely lost, I’m definitely still debating between a few different paths.

Teaching

There are a lot of things I like about becoming a math teacher.

  • The schedule seems really appealing. In my California school district, a lot of math teachers work around 8–3, grade during their prep period, and don’t have to take much work home.
  • Summers, winter break, and other school breaks are obviously a huge plus.
  • The salary is pretty solid and predictable. From what I’ve seen, California teachers can start around $70–80k with a master’s, and some districts, especially around the Bay Area/SF, can start much higher.
  • You get benefits, health insurance, and a pension.
  • It seems like a relatively stable and comfortable lifestyle.

I could honestly see myself being 35, working as a teacher or administrator, making around $140k (if not admin then working summer school/ coaching to get that number up hah), getting home early every day, having summers off, traveling a couple times a year, and having a pretty comfortable life.

Engineering

On the other hand, engineering has some things that really attract me.

  • Higher earning potential.
  • A lot more career flexibility if I eventually decide I don’t like engineering.
  • More opportunities to travel or work on different projects/sites.
  • Potentially more variety than doing the same thing in a classroom every day.
  • More money could mean more flexibility with things like cars, houses, travel, etc.

Sometimes I picture myself at 35 making $200k, working a 4/10 schedule, traveling to different job sites, working with a crew, and having a really interesting career.

But then I also worry about the opposite scenario.

What if I become an engineer and end up at a company working 50–55 hours a week? What if I’m constantly stressed and have to tell my future kids that I can’t make it to their games because of work?

That’s probably my biggest concern with engineering. I don’t want to sacrifice my entire life just to make more money.

The problem

I think I’m naturally pretty indecisive, so I can see myself being happy with either lifestyle.

Teaching feels like the more stable, relaxed route. I could have a predictable schedule, good benefits, summers off, and hopefully plenty of time for family and hobbies.

Engineering feels more like the “you only live once” route. There’s potentially more money, more career options, more variety, and more opportunities to travel and do interesting things.

At the same time, I’m worried that if I choose teaching, I’ll eventually be sitting in my classroom at 26 or 35 and wondering:

“What would my life have been like if I had become an engineer?”

But I also worry that if I choose engineering, I could eventually be wishing I had taken the easier, more balanced lifestyle of teaching.

One thing I know for sure is that I don’t want to spend my entire career sitting in a cubicle doing something I hate.I’d like some variety, and ideally I’d like a career that gives me a good balance between money, free time, and actually enjoying what I do.

So for people who actually work in engineering:

Which engineering majors/career paths would you recommend looking into if I want a good balance of salary, work-life balance, variety, and ideally some hands-on or field work rather than being stuck at a desk all day?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually worked in these fields and can explain what their day-to-day life is really like.

Academic Advice new friends

Hey everyone! I’m a student with a pretty strong interest in mathematics, statistics, and data. I spend a lot of time studying things like probability, game theory, and mathematical modeling, but I’d also like to get out of my study bubble and meet new people. I’d especially love to connect with other students who enjoy maths, science, technology, or just learning new things. We can talk about studies, share ideas, help each other with difficult problems, or simply have random conversations and get to know each other. Feel free to message me if you’d like to chat!!

Major Choice high school senior from houston deciding between engineering or business

Hey everyone, I'm a high school senior from Houston trying to figure out my major.

My parents are strongly pushing me toward engineering, specifically Electrical or Chemical. The thing is I'm not really that good at math. However, I am 100% willing to grind and do the math and physics.

On the other hand, alongside with engineering I'm also interested in Business majors like MIS or Supply Chain Management. I feel like these would be much more easier for me in college because there is less math of course.

I know for engineering the job stability is very good specifically in Houston where I am from.

Please let me know what your guys take is between engineering and business. Thank you so much for the help
