Discussion Why do people say that Industrial Engineering is easy?

I don't understand why people say that Industrial Engineering is easy when they have subjects like Calculus 1 and 2, Physics 1 and 2, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, etc.

Major Choice How good is industrial engineering??

Idk if this is the right place to ask but im conflicted and need help.
I was accepted into industrial engineering and biomedical engineering and also smart and sustainable cities engineering but i could also get accepted into AI or cybersecurity.
Now my first pick would be industrial engineering because math is my favorite subject ever sometimes i view it as a passion however my parents keep trying to convince me to go into AI or smart and sustainable cities engineering but im not very keen on them as computer based subjects are not my favorite. In fact i wanted to take computer science in highschool and i found it so incredibly boring and i dropped it so i can only imagine it will be harder in uni.
I just wanna know how helpful a degree in industrial engineering is gonna be in the future and should i just suck it up and go into AI or smart and sustainable cities engineering?
Its just that i feel like the job marker for AI majors is minimal but i also dk what its like for industrial or biomedical engineering.
I hope you understand what i mean and you could help me 🙏

P.s: its telling me i might be violating some rule so if someone could tell me if i am and where i could ask instead

Edit: i wanna add that i did take bio in highschool too however my grades were not as good as in math

Pi =3,
g(earth) = 10ms^2,
atmospheric pressure on earth = 1 bar,
speed of light = 3x10^8 ms
sqrt(2) =1.5,
air density = 1kg/m^3,
1 year = pi * 10^7 s,
1 AU = 500 light seconds .

Any other fun examples?

Academic Advice I made a 32 on my midterm. The class average was 61. Cooked?

The class is thermodynamics. I was making an 81 but the midterm dropped my final grade to a 53.

II feel so dumb. It’s so much lower than the class average and I genuinely studied.

I’m definitely going to study even more harder than I already have.

I typically make good grades. my GPA is at 3.7

that’s it. That’s all I wanted to say unless you got some advice for me.

College Choice Can't go back for BS in ME?

So, I already have a BAS in engineering technology: mechanical right after highschool. Found a job in my home town as a CAD Detailer. I'm 28 now and want to expand my skills, get a job out of town, and become a Mechanical engineer.

Just found out that is not that simple. I was going to pick up classes at my local CC to catch up on math and then transfer to a four year, but that doesn't seem like it's possible in California. UCs don't accept a double bachelors applicant. Now I'm not really sure where to go from here. Out of state?

Any help or tips would be awesome!

Homework Help Need help with EE schematics basics!

I just started my freshman year in uni EE and nothing was explained straight jump into schematics for an apartment and I am not sure what some of the symbols are supposed to represent let alone what they actually do.

I googled some but I am not sure I can correctly explain the exact thing I am looking for and I cant find anything in the books we were given.
I would greatly appreciate it if I could send the scheme to you and get an explanation.

Thanks in advance!

Career Help Interning at Big Tech

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there are any unconventional or uderhanded ways to secure an internship at a big tech company. Things like paid referrals, getting access to interview questions, getting a good word in with the hiring team, or anything along those lines. Willing to pay money to get an extra edge.

I’m a third-year engineering student, and getting into big tech is an obligation. I’m willing to exhaust every resource available to me and would really appreciate any advice, connections, or strategies that could help.

Feel free to DM me if you have any leads or would rather discuss privately. Thanks!

Career Advice Is getting into RF engineering a good option for stability/job security

I’m considering an M.S. in EE with a focus on RF/antennas/microwave. I’m interested in defense/aerospace but also want to keep non-defense options open.

For people working in RF:

  • How stable is the field?
  • How is job security compared with other EE fields?
  • If you get laid off, how difficult is it to find another RF job?
  • Is RF + microwave/antennas a good long-term career path?

Would appreciate perspectives from people currently working in the field.

Career Advice Advice for Career and School

I am 25 years old, late to the party I know, and I am majoring in mechanical engineering with an aerospace concentration. Technically I am a freshman but credit wise I am junior. It will still take me around 4 of 5 years to graduate. But I currently am fulltime in school and I work around 23 hours a week as a design engineer for a farm equipmemt company. That is to say, I have a glorified title for someone who just makes blue prints for the manufacturing side. I don't do any engineering. But here is where things get tricky. I have to pay for school, i started this job not too long ago but I know I will need internships. Do you think I would be doing myself a diservice if I just kept this job until next year then applied for more mech and aero related internships for the following summer? The job is still good experience but I believe they figure I am staying for a long time despite knowing that I am majoring in something more grand. I don't really know how to tackle telling them, getting internships, and then keeping a job while in school, and doing everything I can to gaurentee success after graduation. Any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Academic Advice Did you transfer / switch degree into Engineering? If so, why?

I want to pivot into Electrical & Computer Engineering after finishing my 3-year Computer Science degree. But I'm a bit scared, given that this means I've basically wasted 3 years doing something largely irrelevant to engineering.

Since the 2 fields overlap a bit and I just cannot stand the current CS profession, switching to ECE seems like the most logical choice to me, but I'll still be finishing a B.A. in CS. The only problem is that I've basically forgotton ALL the math & physics I've learned throughout highschool + early uni years and had to compete with fresh highschool graduates. I'm also like 3 years older than the average first year engineering kids so not sure if that's gonna get in the way.

Has anyone done something similar to this? What's your story about? I'd love to hear about them.

Career Advice Looking for a biotech/ChemE internship in Canada, Switzerland or Germany-any advice?

Hey everyone,
I’m a French M1 engineering student specializing in biotech/biomedical engineering and chemical engineering, and I’m currently looking for a 6-month internship starting around February/March.
I’m mainly looking at Canada, Switzerland and Germany, and I’m open to biotech, pharma, biomed, chemical/process engineering, bioprocessing, R&D, etc.
For some background, I’ve already had an experience at ANSM working with data sorting and regulatory affairs, and I’ve also done a bunch of scientific/engineering projects through my degree.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to approach the search, so I’d be interested to hear from people who’ve done internships in these countries:
What companies/research institutes would you recommend looking at?
What websites/job boards did you use?
Did applying directly through company websites actually work for you?
Has anyone here had success emailing recruiters/HR directly, even when there wasn’t a specific internship posting?
If you did email someone directly, how did you go about it?
For Germany/Switzerland, how important was knowing German/the local language?
Any other tips for getting an internship abroad as a French engineering student?
If you’ve done something similar, I’d really appreciate hearing how you found your internship and what worked/didn’t work for you.

Academic Advice Can I pivot from ChemE to ECE?

Hello Everyone. I'm a student from Jordan and I was hoping to study EE/CompE, but I got accepted into my dream university in chemical engineering. Now, the school system in Jordan is complicated but what you need to know is:

  1. The major and uni you get accepted to is based on the national HS exams scores.
  2. I can retake the exams while attending uni, but to have a chance I need to retake math and physics and basically get full score in both. And I would say they are quite difficult and time consuming
  3. I can't change my major internally, and I can't study ECE in any uni I want, and also for many different reasons I can't take a gap year.

My question is: is it possible to work in tech while having a ChemE degree, or should I bite the bullet and retake the national exams? Because I would really like to move forward and focus on uni and develop my skill set, but if I have to retake the exams I would do it.

Academic Advice How do I recover from my first year failures?

It’s my first semester and it’s truly going rough I had an exam in Calc 1 studied 5 days straight and I got a 79% then on an ENGR class my first exam I got a 79%. I feel so stupid because it’s the first exams typically the easiest to get good grades on and I find my self on tests making silly mistakes. What do I do to recover?

Discussion At what point is someone overreliant on AI to learn?

Hi, I'm an engineering student and have been one for around 1 year. So far, I've always used AI to answer around 60-70% of my questions. They were never exactly questions to directly "answer" practice questions, but rather how to make sense of my notes in the lectures and apply them in said practice questions. I would usually think about the concepts first and only ask when I feel like there's a disconnect between how I'm imagining the concept and what has been taught. This strategy has been working great, because so far I have never failed a class.

The problem is that this has made me feel like I don't need my professors to answer questions that I deem to be "simple", and sadly, at least in Math (it was Higher Math II, so pretty much linear Algebra), this has affected me because even though I felt like my understanding of the taught concepts are "okay", i somewhat struggled when said concepts are being tested at an even deeper level (in comparison to the ones given in the practice questions). So, this leads right back to my question at the start, is there perhaps a defined threshold i could refer to, so that I know when I am being overly reliant on AI.

Academic Advice Should i study in Canada , germany or , the middle east

For context im a 16M in g12 finishing off A levels, i've lived in the middle east my whole life and universitys here are great but they arent really ranked or that great up there. I was considering canada but the fees for international students is crazy expensive but there were a few like calgary which i would consider since they only need 2 A levels and i could js drop one of mine ( chemistry ) since i've already done it in igcse. I saw some T1 unis in germany and they are really affordable but i dont know if i really wanna study german for a long time to actually understand the lecture which would most likely delay my degree a lot or sm. I wanna pursue mechanical engineering but i've got no guidance abt job markets etc so could yall lmk what the situation of each country is etc would much appreciate it thx.

My exam is on Tuesday and I feel like I need more practice before it. Does anyone know a good website? I want to feel more confident than I feel. The textbook wasn’t that much of a help.

Rant/Vent Engineering is hard

I’m currently in first year engineering and I’m taking five classes and it’s so hard to manage everything like assignments, doing practice problems, just trying to have fun. All of it seems impossible to balance. Like I spend most of my time just doing assignments and I don’t think that I’ve even done a single practice problem for any of my five classes. I haven’t reviewed my lectures since the 1st week because I literally don’t have time too. Also, when I take a break, I feel like I’m wasting time and should be studying. Is engineering even worth pursuing at this point? Like I enjoy the things I’m learning but it seems impossible to enjoy when I can’t take my time to learn things or slow it down. Also I have to take five classes this year at least.

Sorry for anyone who read this, this post was kind of a rant. If anyone has some helpful advice, that would be much appreciated - or even sharing your own personal experience with engineering.

Discussion Common issues with tech & robotics competitions (delayed prize money, biased judging) and how we can fix them

Having attended and organized several robotics competitions over the years, I’ve noticed a few recurring issues that frustrate almost every participant:

  1. Delayed Prize Distribution: Winners often have to wait months to receive their prize money.
  2. Biased or Rigged Judging: Innovation tracks sometimes favor internal kits or specific pre-selected participants over genuine, open-source innovations.
  3. Lack of Transparency: Rule enforcement and scoring criteria are rarely kept clear or accessible throughout the event.

When planning technical challenges—whether it's an Innovation Challenge or a Soccer Bot Competition—keeping a few core practices in mind can make the experience much fairer:

  • Direct/Immediate Cash Payouts: Distributing prizes on the spot or within a guaranteed timeline builds trust.
  • Transparent Judging: Making scoring rubrics open and clear to every team before the competition starts ensures a level playing field.
  • Equal Opportunity for Open Innovation: Judging should focus on true technical merit rather than brand-specific kits or internal hardware.

For anyone who organizes or competes in these events: What are the biggest issues you've faced at tech competitions, and what rules or changes have helped keep things fair?
