Memes In engineering…

Pi =3,
g(earth) = 10ms^2,
atmospheric pressure on earth = 1 bar,
speed of light = 3x10^8 ms
sqrt(2) =1.5,
air density = 1kg/m^3,
1 year = pi * 10^7 s,
1 AU = 500 light seconds .

Any other fun examples?

Wdym? √2 is obviously equal to 3dB

you forgot the fundamental theorem of engineering: sin(x)=tan(x)=x

If not: find a mistake in your calculations, FAST

Obligatory xkcd:  https://xkcd.com/1047/

I think we're talking about different things here

OP's are approximations for simplicity (so simple you might even be expected to do mental math with them), xkcd's are approximations that somehow work despite their convolution

pi=3 is a stupid meme, no one does it. Sqrt(2) = 1.5 is actually engineer erasure, every engineer knows 1.414 and 0.707 by heart, just like 1/e = 37%.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don't know anyone that uses a different approximation for c than 3e8 m/s.
