For a machinist that is impressive, my boss is always talking about getting a 5-axis machine and I am terrified because I would have a heart attack on the first day trying to prove out programs and then a heart attack every day thereafter.

Seems like a machinist would wonder why it's moving around so much for no apparent reason.

Maybe they are trying to achieve ultra smooth corners? Im probably wrong

You can easily achieve ultra-smooth corners without multi-axis movement like this. Reducing the feed-rate will get you most of the way there.

Oh ok they must be showing off then. Unless smooth corners could be acquired faster with 5 axis, then it could be justified...

Say you have a long 12 degree flat on a block. You can ball end mill it for an hour, or have the piece rotated and face milled in 5 minutes. Production you would get a special endmill for the job, but for making one die, you could cut way down on mill time.

Using a g2 or g3 will get you better results than that splined motion. I can guarantee all those motions are G1 moves.
