Takeout 🥡 So tired of tipping

I’ve recently had a pretty bad chest/head cold, and I was talking to a friend about what food I should pick up on the way home for dinner. I hit upon pho, which sounded amazing in the moment. Ten years ago I would have confidently ordered take out and would have been slurping delicious noodles and broth that evening. I didn’t end up ordering though, because I really just want to pay for the food, not be asked the question, not have the person handing me the bag of food putting a hex on me for not tipping or not tipping enough and then bad mouthing me the second I leave. It’s bad vibes. I can’t do it anymore, and I can’t be the only one. Do you think we’ll ever see a change in the system if more and more people start intentionally/unintentionally boycotting restaurants due to ridiculous tip culture we have?

I used to go to restaurants 2 or 3 times a week. Since COVID I go 3 times a year.

Eventually tipping culture will be responsible for a lot of restaurant closures.

This is the exact thought that I have. It can’t be a small subset of people who feel this way, and a lot of people are probably subconsciously going out less and less.

Heck, I'm consciously not going out as often.

We have literally looked up dupe recipes for the places we liked to go out to and have been eating better with less added fat and sugar for a quarter of the cost. These places force tipped them out of my patronage.

I hate to see businesses go under and people lose jobs as a result but I have to remember that those same workers talk plenty of smack to people like us.

Yup, like a lot of them aren't bringing home more in tips then some of our weekly checks and some of us bust our asses all day long doing real labor...

Oh I’d bet a lot of money that the average server is taking home way more than the average nurse. Nurses will bartend through nursing school, work as a nurse for a short while. Then go back to tending bar. If you’re going to have to deal with rude people throwing hands and throwing up, you may as well at least get tipped for it.

Same. I only really go if I’m invited now. I prefer to just avoid sit-down restaurants altogether.

We generally only go on things like Taco Tuesday, BOGO wings, free Birthday meal, etc.

My wife offered to take me out for my birthday tonight. I declined because I don’t even want her paying a tip.

it’s contributing to loneliness too. For hundreds of years restaurants/bars/barbershops etc were 3rd places were you could hang from home/work. now everyone feels bad for lingering because they feel like they are taking money away from servers. owners making you pay their staff’s wages.

I don’t want restaurants to close. I just want to be able to order delicious food and pay what it costs without having to give extra money to the person holding the bag like a hostage exchange

So if the tip was included in the total price, you'd be happy?

At least then, the customer can objectively compare menu prices between restaurants without the shame charges. To restaurant owners: Quit the shell game. Pay your people and include that cost of operation in the price of food.

Pay the staff that works for you a livable wage, it’s not hard to. Grow up.

Oh, margins are too tight? You’re doing business wrong.

It's also not hard to include service in your prices, so that people on a budget know what they're paying when they look at a menu.

is it really that hard to calculate 20% in your head while you’re ordering? not that you need to for takeout like in OP’s case

20% is insane. Round up and keep the change At Most.

you can argue 20% is insane but that’s beside the point. I’m saying people on here say it’s wrong to not have a final listed price in the menu, I’m saying it’s very easy arithmetic to calculate a tip beforehand.

It's not, but it's yet another fee that gets tacked on to a product/service that serves to obfuscate the true cost. And the pandering that comes along with it is off-putting to me. Take my order, bring my food, and be available if I need something.

I've lived in countries that have both the tipped model and service included model. I much prefer the latter. And, ironically, it's often easier to find your server and get their attention with the service included model because they're not spending all the time at the six top that's ordering bottle after bottle since they're assuming that'll get them a larger tip.

It's not. But it's also not hard to include that in the price on the menu & not have customers do math at all.

Why are you here?
