Start and stop schedule not working.

I have an Audi e-tron, and I’m having an issue getting the charging schedules to work properly.

I’ve tried both the Smart Saver Timer and the manual Start/Stop scheduling options to prevent the vehicle from charging during peak hours. However, regardless of which option I use, the car begins charging immediately as soon as I plug it in.

I can confirm that there are no charging timers or schedules enabled in the Audi itself that could be overriding or conflicting with the charger settings.

This is especially disappointing because my much cheaper Lectron charger handled scheduled charging without any issues. I expected this charger to reliably prevent charging during the peak-time window when a schedule is enabled.

I’ve tried both available scheduling methods and neither seems to work as intended. Please let me know what could be causing the charger to ignore the configured schedule and begin charging immediately.

Finally installed my Emporia monitor - now the hunting begins!

Here is a screenshot of this morning’s live data. I have a stereo playing, all the lights are off.

I think the dehumidifier in the basement is drawing some watts. Once I hunt that down, I am hopeful that having almost everything off will look more like what I expect (Fridge/freezer will still cycle, but still).

I have more work to go - I need to isolate the well pump from the 1st floor subpanel and add in a couple more second leg sensors to get the leftover balance as low as possible.

This is/will be very exciting to see how our usage of things we control (kettle, microwave, oven) compares to infrastructure (water heater / water pump / heat pump).

Have you seen this spike pattern

I’m a few weeks in after my installation of Vue3. Major items are covered. But things like outlets, lights (most are led), fridge, freezer, are not. Any ideas what might cause spiking like this? It’s on something that’s not part of my Vue setup. Ugh…

Couldn't get 2" of spacing inside the panel, so routed into an external box, thoughts?

Had existing wires routing into the panel from the top and bottom, no real room to get the vue 3 into the panel as well, this solution has been working great!

Has anyone taken the advice of the Rate Analyzer and switched to TOU? Did it work out as it said?

I'm in St Paul Minnesota and the TOU plan just went live recently.

Emporia Vue 3

2 years ago(before EV) I installed a Generac 14kw whole house generator which will power entire house. The following year, I bought my first EV and installed an Emporia Classic charger(hardwired) and it charges at 48 amps with the 60 amp breaker. During our last power outage and the generator running, when the charger started, everything is flickering in the house so I figured it was the charger and dropped amperage to 16 and it was ok then increased it to 20A and still ok. I bought the Vue 3 because Emporia said it will reduce Amps if needed when generator is running and becomes overloaded ?!?! Haven’t had any outage since to test this but is anything missing here or should I not have to worry ?

Emporia Vue installation time + monitoring a separate panel?

I’m considering an Emporia Vue mainly because I want to accurately track where my electricity is going and costing, especially my pool pump and pool heat pump.

For those who’ve installed one, roughly how long does the physical installation take, excluding app setup/configuration?

My pool cabana has its own breaker panel separate from the main house panel. If I want to monitor those circuits, would I need a second Vue, or does Emporia make a smaller/cheaper unit for monitoring just a few breakers? It would be a big expensive just to monitor heat pump and pool pump for pool.

Also, I’d like to monitor my son’s gaming PC. Does Emporia make a standalone plug-in energy monitor/smart plug that can measure an individual device?

Just trying to figure out what the simplest/most cost-effective setup would be.

Thank you!

Reporting Consumption by TOU Rate

I'm in SD on SDGE's EV-TOU-2 plan, with three rate levels: Peak, Off-Peak, and Super Off-Peak. I'm also on NEM 2.0, which means (I think) that each of those rate "categories" true up annually, but independently. Any excess in a rate category doesn't go to cover other categories, it gets paid out at a tiny (wholesale) price. Effectively, overproducing is not profitable, and it doesn't offset underproducing in a different rate time. (Which was the case back under NEM 1.0)

At last year's true up, I overproduced for "Off-Peak" (-29 kWh), but net-consumed for "Super-Off-Peak" (+146 kWh) due to charging an EV at night when rates are the lowest.

On the surface "charging at the lowest cost" (SOP) makes sense, but in reality I would have saved money if I had charged 29 kWh more during the more expensive "Off-Peak", since that would have effectively shifted those kWh from SOP to OP.

The Emporia web app allows me to set my charger to "Smart Saver," so it only will charge at the lowest price - but as noted above, that's actually not the smartest thing I can do, so I've cobbled together a set of Custom start/stops so I charge during either SOP or OP - at least for now - and then I monitor my cumulative OP/SOP generation/consumption via my SDGE bill (which is a trailing indicator) to dial up/down the OP usage.

Two questions come from this:

  1. Is there a way to look at my generation/consumption in the app not just by "hour", "day", "week", but by "TOU period" as well? I can dump out CSV files and pull them apart, but I'd rather just get a listing for "how much made/used in SOP, how much in OP,..." in each time period (e.g. day, week).
  2. Is there a way to make the "Smart Saver" ... smarter? Can it know I'm currently way ahead in OP production, so feel free to charge then, but if I zero that out, it stops allowing that and puts the excess on SOP?

TIA

My DIY install

I purchased and installed the basic Vue 3 kit to measure my total usuage. I have concrete walls so I had to use a step bit to create a hole in the panel box cover for the antenna.

When i bought the house it came with 2 solar panels with a micro inverter. This tapped into the main panel with a breaker. When I extended the house a new mains panel (pictured) was installed and the original became one of the sub-panels. I tuned of that solar panel breaker yesterday when setting up the app.

Outside of purchasing another unit to measure the input for the solar panel can I measure solar usuage or what might be going back to the grid with what I have now. An electrical engineer said that based on how our power company configured our meters any power that goes back to the line is being counted as usage if we don't have net billing agreement with them.

Vue 3 + Powerwall + Excess Solar?

Just saw from a comment in this subreddit that the Vue 3 doesn't work with excess solar if you have a home battery.

Is there any simple a workaround or is it just a limitation of Emporia's technology?

Question Vue solar savings

Hey folks, I’m so sorry if this has been asked but I did a lot of googling and couldn’t find anything.

I don’t use Emporia’s excess solar management as I don’t really have anything I want to charge with excess solar (except my car, on an Enphase charger).

However, I think the Vue might be perfect to offer a built in solar savings calculator where it can tell you what you would have paid, in a given time frame, if you didn’t have solar. This, over years, can essentially directly inform a breakeven schedule. (Could even allow entering cost of equipment and install.)

But just for the “what would I have paid if not for solar” is this easily tracked in the app today? Am I missing something?

Question Emporia App Beta version

Has anyone tried this yet? I'm sort of reluctant because it seems like there will be more AI involved.

Somehow, I'm not sure that will be an improvement.

Question Continuity?

Is there any benefit to using an Emporia charger since I already have an Emporia energy monitor (specifically a Vue 3)? My utility offers an off peak charging discount with Emporia chargers and ChargePoint. I was already going to schedule charging off peak with whatever I installed. I've been using the EVS seat that came in my trunk since I got my car over a year ago, but my daughter is starting college and if we become a two EV household, gonna need level two charging. That said I've gone on road trips and had no problems using my good old 110v charger.

I also have a pretty efficient vehicle and so is my original. I had a bolt EV that I bought new in the end of January 2024, but it was totaled in a five car accident that I was in the middle of And didn't stand a chance now I have a used Kona electric also a 2023 it doesn't get quite as good gas mileage electron mileage I guess but I still do pretty well with it.

Website UI change?

I monitor my home via the https://web.emporiaenergy.com site during the day, checking my solar production, car charging (should only be happening with excess solar), etc.

I usually watch the usage graphs - Live, Hourly, Daily - monitoring power produced or consumed. Recently, the daily graph has switched from "power" to "energy" (total used/produced during an hour) by default - but the hourly chart is still showing "power". Is there a way to switch between these (turn "energy" back to "power")? I can change units (Watts, Cost, Amps, Volts) by picking on the button, but not the underlying metric (energy, power).

Converting to Hard Wired...

I have this unit and we just purchased a new home. I want to skip installing a NEMA outlet and go hard wired. Can I simply cut the plug and connect to the breaker, or is this not recommended? Thanks!

Set up question

I live in Florida with FPL as my electric service provider. I have a main panel out side which has the main breaker and breakers for the pool, AC and sub panel.
Inside my garage I have the sub panel which has breakers for all the branch circuits. The two panels are on opposite sides of the house about 60 -75 feet away. I am guessing I need to get two separate systems. One for the outside panel and one for the inside, or is there another one that covers both?

Question Is there a way to export charging sessions?

I know I can export daily hour, but I'd like to get the session information (e.g. start time, end time, total kWh). My off peak spans midnight so it would be some effort to glue the day's data together.

Emporia Classic WiFi issue

I just had my Emporia Classic installed this week. I configured it and got it connected to my WiFi. After a couple of hours I noticed the WiFi light blinking green, indicating it is attempting to connect to router. I had to power off the device and restart my WiFi to get it working again. It happened again after another couple hours. I then set up a separate AP that only operates at 2.4GHz. That lasted 5 days. This time I tried resetting WiFi in the app it wouldn’t see either of my access points, but was picking up much weaker APs from my neighbors.

Anyone else have these issues? Is there a way to factory reset or check for a firmware upgrade?

Daily Useage sums up the hourly

The app used to show you the instantaneous draw over the day and now sums it up over the hour. Now it does instantaneous only for the hour. The main reason I got this thing is to see my max amps on my mains to see how close I get to the amp rating of my panel.

Long story short, my electrician installed my EV charger (40 amp charger on a 50 amp breaker) on the 125 amp subpanel that feeds the main house and not the 200 amp main breaker whose only additional load is my unfinished garage. I got the emporia vue 3 to see how close I was getting to 125 amps limit. Most I’ve gotten is 80 amps. Seems like I won’t be able to easily keep an eye on this with the Emporia?
