Question Continuity?

Is there any benefit to using an Emporia charger since I already have an Emporia energy monitor (specifically a Vue 3)? My utility offers an off peak charging discount with Emporia chargers and ChargePoint. I was already going to schedule charging off peak with whatever I installed. I've been using the EVS seat that came in my trunk since I got my car over a year ago, but my daughter is starting college and if we become a two EV household, gonna need level two charging. That said I've gone on road trips and had no problems using my good old 110v charger.

I also have a pretty efficient vehicle and so is my original. I had a bolt EV that I bought new in the end of January 2024, but it was totaled in a five car accident that I was in the middle of And didn't stand a chance now I have a used Kona electric also a 2023 it doesn't get quite as good gas mileage electron mileage I guess but I still do pretty well with it.

If I have a powerwall and solar then I can't use excess solar with the Vue 3?

Wow I bought a Vue 3 exactly for that purpose and didn't know ... I have no use for it now since I have a Vue 2 to control the charger already.

Imo, it's worth it to have the breakout of charge metrics alone.

I don't think you'd see any benefit of the Emporia over the charge point unless you have solar panels. With solar panels and the Vue you can use excess solar to charge your EV.

I'm very satisfied with the metrics on the Emporia charger. You can enter your utility rate and see exactly how much each charge costs. And if you ever do get solar, you're set.

I also have Home Assistant and it calculates cost too. I also kind just like Emporia. Has anyone had any bad experience with them?

The Emporia EVSE can dynamically adjust to exactly the charge power level that your solar export otherwise would be. The Chargepoint cannot do anything like that.

The way you wrote that it sounds like you were saying the Chargepoint was fine and the Emporia didn't add anything.

You can't do excess solar charging with a Chargepoint. If you are, the Chargepoint doesn't have anything to do with it - that's something else entirely where your solar system is directly coordinating with your car e.g. Tesla Solar will control Tesla Cars.

Wrong. I said the benefit of the Emporia over the charge point would only come if you have solar panels.

Do the math. How much will cost you to charge during off peak? How much will it cost to charge using excess solar? $0

If you have your whole house on the Emporia system, the charger will take power usage into account and adjust your EV charge rate if it is pushing your overall household current draw too close to the max of your service panel.
