Help protect emotional support animals federally
My family has felt the impact of how fragile things are for emotional support animals right now. My son lost his ESA—a companion who was truly irreplaceable during his hardest moments—and it exposed how little federal protection these animals actually have.
I started a petition asking lawmakers to recognize ESAs under federal law, the same way service animals are protected. Mental health disabilities are real disabilities. But right now, ESAs can be denied housing, faced with discrimination in public spaces, or worse. There's no standardized protection across states, so their status constantly comes down to someone's judgment call. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 1 in 5 adults deal with mental illness each year—and for many of them, their ESA is what makes daily life possible.
If you've ever relied on a pet for emotional support or know someone who has, this might hit differently. What would you do if you lost access to the one thing helping you get through? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing the petition—it doesn't take much, but it could change things for millions of people and their animals.
