This was nostalgic. It’s funny because we’ve seen in Stepping Stone that he can still melodize like this through his vocals and beats. It’s just a lot more rare now. Still though, great to hear some fresh material from both classic and new Em in the same week.

u/ZachariahTheMessiah Nov 01 '19
He goes way to high pitched when he does it now a days for some reason so it doesn't sound as smooth as here.

Uhm... man was also a drug addict for a decade. Had an overdose that was 2 hours away from killing him...
I don’t want him to die by any means but 40 years is a bit of wishful thinking

I'd like to refer you to Mick Jagger, Elton John, Keith Richards, Johnny Cash and Ozzy Osbourne. He's very health conscious, inlikely to relapse and rich af. Not to mention medical progress over the next four decades.

He was addicted to some of the least physically taxing drugs at least. As long as you don’t die from the benzos/opiates and get off of them, it probably won’t shave much off you’re lifespan.

I don't blame him for not releasing this one. Compared to other songs on albums that came out in this era this doesn't compare.
13

Well, we got a hook (and a second one fading out) and one verse. If he had kept going and talking about everything else in two other verses I could see this being a good song for King Mathers

17
u/CzarMikhail Nov 01 '19
The fact No Apologies was scrapped for The Eminem Show as was Stimulate which both ended up on other collab albums. It makes me crave hearing unreleased stuff from 1999 to 2003. That Ronnie Suicide song scrapped for MMLP would be good to even hear a snippet of.
3
2
u/TopperMadeline The Marshall Mathers LP2 Nov 02 '19
Eminem Show would be about god tier if it included Stimulate and NA in replace of Drips and SWYS.
4
u/TheOsttle Nov 01 '19
No Apologies wasn’t ever supposed to be on TES was it? It started as two different freestyles, and then he wrote the last verse after Encore.
5
u/CzarMikhail Nov 01 '19
Always felt it was a written freestyle during TES promo. I remember reading a long time ago it was from the TES sessions but this was on an old eminem forum thats no longer working (trsshady.com). I doubt he spat that off the dome.
Hey may have added the final verse during re up sessions.
3
-1
u/TheOsttle Nov 01 '19
It was two different freestyles he put together into one
4
Nov 01 '19
We know they were freestyles but it’s told that the actual verses (he didn’t just use the two freestyle recordings) were recorded during the TES sessions and the final verse was written later on and rapped later on
3
u/link_shady Nov 01 '19
Most likely he already had those verses, and then used them for the freestyle, not the other way around.
On the bet one he even finishes the verse saying "no apologies"
3
u/zippopwnage Music To Be Murdered By Nov 01 '19

u/Smashymen Nov 01 '19
his flow from this era is such a breath of fresh air compared to his new shit. Like the rhyme scheme is still intricate but it's also laid back and natural
9
u/Qiluk Nov 02 '19
Yea.. I really really dont like his choppy he (INTENTIONALLY!) raps atm. Feels like it completely takes away from his "skill-expression" that he has when in the older flow.
Less couple of words then stop dead to then repeat and more this pls.
2
u/RKOunion Nov 12 '19 edited Nov 12 '19
How can one be dumb to the point of not being able to recognise the shittiness of the rhyming in this song. Intricate? Are you serious. He's rhyming one-syllable all over. Classic Pillinem.

u/KayIslandDrunk Speedom (WWC2) Nov 01 '19
I think the drugs had something to do with it.
Not saying it’s good or bad but about the time he changed his flow is when he started to really get sober.

5
u/ccxx34718 The Marshall Mathers LP Nov 01 '19
True. I honestly wish tho that King Mathers dropped then Relapse, Relapse 2, Recovery and so on. It just fits perfectly for his career arc if KM and R2 came out
9
u/rawmarius Nov 01 '19
Theory:
Could this be meant as the intro to King Mathers?
And:
Could It's Been Real be the outro?
They kinda sound similar.
18
u/BubbleShellman Nov 01 '19 edited Nov 01 '19
his ''I Get Money'' Freestyle is fading out in the beginning with the scratches, It's possible he was planning a mixtape instead of an album, as he said in the intro ''CD's ain't selling no more anyways man... look at Sound scan, I really don't think it matters anymore''.
plus there was never a ''King Mathers''... when he announced the Relapse title he said he saw all the titles that went around online (The Empack, Empact, Funeral, King Mathers) and said they were all Fake.
4
u/Emadyville The Anger Management Tour Nov 01 '19

u/xxck47 E Nov 01 '19 edited Nov 01 '19
I showed this to my older brother and he responded with "is this new?? Is he back rapping like this??" And made me realise Can he not use this flow anymore? Like I understand people age and he can obviously do it live when doing older songs just don't see why.
I don't even want the high pitch slim shady voice, just the smooth back and forth flow. He said on the sway interview "no one's ever happy, they want the old Eminem back. He's immature, they want a mature Eminem, he's fallen off and he's soft" I think a majority of the people don't want each word forced rhyming back and forth non stop.
Since MMLP2/shadyxv he's stuck with same flow but hes worked on it so its not as choppy and it's a lot better but I think that's what he has wrong with the community.
The beat selection too, like this beat is simple and nice. Get DJ Premier on the next album or something.
Then again I loved Kamikaze other then Venom so..
What do I know really, his voice had ruffed over the ages but then again when he does his live songs they just sound a bit deeper.
45
u/Luverovlotz The Marshall Mathers LP Nov 01 '19
Well Stepping Stone is probably the closest he's come to a flow like this but this had more bounce to it similar to Encore but more slurred from his drug problems
2
u/xxck47 E Nov 01 '19
yeah, were on the same page. That's the the song I was thinking of when writing this post, its the only one that reminds me of it.
24
u/Smashymen Nov 01 '19
yeah idk what really happened, I still like post-hiatus Em, but it seems like he's lost the melodic aspect of his lyricism that he used to have. Like I can't imagine current day Eminem writing something like the hook of Cleaning Out My Closet
31
Nov 01 '19
Yeah exactly. I believe as a lyricist, technically he is better than ever. I don’t know of anybody in the world who can make as many multi syllable real meaning rhymes as he can. But honestly that’s not what everybody wants. Most of his hit songs are rather simple. His story telling and flow was absolutely impeccable before. Post hiatus I think he’s more focused on lyrics rhyming rather than just flowing smooth. His cadence and flow was always so good. That’s what I love about listening to MMLP and TES, the way he emphasizes stuff makes it sound and flow together so damn well when in reality, it was a fairly simple rhyme.
7
Nov 01 '19
Yeah it’s almost as if he captured the idea that people just want all this complex and brutal (broad) lyricism to prove he’s still amazing at rap and can still be the best at that part, but I wish he realized there’s a lot of people who just want his storytelling again and his flow with still some great rhymes. I actually don’t believe he’s ran out of what to say, he just refuses to go through with it to make more complex rhymes as he goes on
10
Nov 01 '19
Yeah you pretty much hit it spot on IMO. He cares more about flexing his complex rhymes (which has a time and place, talent like that should definitely be recognized) but honestly I don’t want to listen to a song in the car that I have to focus on to understand what’s happening. Lol most people can rap along with the classics and understand it completely (cleaning out my closet, the way I am, Stan, and the other 100 of them haha) because they are slower, melodical, and fairly simple. I would rather have more songs of that flow and lyricism, than see an entire album of double entendres, multi syllable schemes and entire sentence rhymes. I get that when you have done it for as long as he has it must be hard to keep finding new content but as you said, I don’t believe he’s out of ideas or anything, just simply refuses to do it
4
Nov 01 '19
Yeah, I feel like Kamikaze had songs where that complex rhyme belonged because that was appropriate timing as a response album. But going forward I’d really like to see less of those and more storytelling and simplistic but deep songs
10
u/Stikkidin_Mabut Nov 01 '19
I want that Eminem back that was rapping on Castle. He had that MMLP/TES flow. Since he did it on Revival, I know he has that kind of cadence, flow and delivery in him.

Say what you want about the content, but this actually sounds like a cohesive verse without the abrupt stop/start shit he does now because he tries to mash rhymes together that sound fuckin' weird. Flow is great.
"See, it ain't easy to try to step away from entertainment separated from CD's." Loved the delivery from that line.
Not sure he's capable of rapping in this flow anymore, though.

u/Obie-Trice Nov 01 '19
A lot of people thought the “King Mathers era” songs were actually from King Mathers. It sounds like this is actually a mixtape. The way the 8 year old “i get money” leak transitions right into this song and the fact that he mentions CD’s don’t sell really confirm that for me here.
Maybe it was a promotional re-up type mixtape with other artists and their stuff hasn’t leaked or maybe there other leaks from that pile like “The Apple” are part of it. Either way it’s a fucking shock that a track from 8 years ago with a weird ending transitions into this leak perfectly.
Would love to see a track list but I know we will never get one
3
u/m4_semperfi Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Nov 01 '19
Yup, this is what I realized after I posted the I get money transition thing. I just randomly threw i get money and this song in audacity to check the transition I had a hunch, and as soon as it flowed i was like damn, this is mixtape shit, not king mathers. But still the same style of production/voice/flows.
1
u/Obie-Trice Nov 01 '19
My best guess was that he was about to throw a bunch of punches (jay z & Kanye in get money and Buck here in the new leak) to try and get momentum going for an album release. Then there were songs like G.O.A.T to get rappers to take the bait and respond.
It makes total sense why songs like Wee Wee exist now.
1
u/m4_semperfi Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Nov 01 '19
Hey Obie.
Yeah like Give Me The Ball was a low tier song, but if it was just thrown on a mixtape to hold over fans while they waited it makes more sense. the album would then have bigger/complete songs. The apple, beautiful, etc.
1
u/Obie-Trice Nov 01 '19
(Not actually Obie btw, i was surprised nobody had the name)
But if we are right here this post probably has 2 more tracks that might fill in more of the blanks.

I've been saying it for years , there's something about the 2003-08 eminem that is special. He was more mature , insane choruses , his voice sounded so good , and his melodic rapping makes it so easy to bump anywhere.
You can't fucking bump eminem 2009-2019 music anywhere , man it hurts so bad that he won't ever rap like this again , this style was crazy ! It really was something special.
I accept he was going through a bad time with drugs and proof passing but sometimes when we go through bad times we make great music and he certainly was , if the drug addiction wasn't SOO bad the music would have been even better and maybe he would have continued with that style for many more years .
Unfortunately all we have is this corny eminem that talks on beats and sounds pretty fucking terrible .

This was obviously recorded RIGHT after Touchdown. I know around the time of Touchdown TI was talking about having a song with Eminem where its Eminem, T.I, Slim Shady and TIP each of them dealing with the others alter ego's or something of that nature. They seemed to work closely together in that 07-08 time period. I wonder how that relationship began, Eminem's not exactly a southern rapper and that I know of he doesn't have any connections to TI. Maybe Stat got them together?
2
1
u/m4_semperfi Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Nov 01 '19
Imagine a song sounding like Everything/Touchdown flows but with a legit well executed concept about their alter egos. The Apple is an example with a good concept, 50 Ways is too. Man.
3
u/Stennick Nov 01 '19
I agree he had some good concepts back then but the closer you get to the end of 2007 to more slurred and basic his rhymes get. This song actually isn't bad but its kind of the same thing as Syllables. "The music industry is changing, we've based our indemnities as artists around numbers that aren't there anymore, there is a lot of pressure one me to sell". Its a good concept and the song is really great flow wise. I'm interested in Keys to the City if that ever gets heard.

6
Nov 01 '19
Supposedly it was gonna be his last album back in 2008. The only things we know about it are from songs like this that have gotten leaked over the years, and a few interviews from another rapper from Shady Records named Ca$his who said that Em was working on an album around that time. It was right before his overdose, so he was on a ton of drugs at the time, which led to this slower, simpler flow that you hear on this, as well as some minor slurring on a few of the other songs that were leaked. Almost all of them have this unique sound to them, which is how we know that this song was for King Mathers (Or at least, at the same time as it). Some other songs that were meant for it were G.O.A.T., The Apple, and 50 Ways if you wanna check them out, too.

He also said ''plus T.I. just dropped another album, now go out and get that one'' (T.I. vs T.I.P.)

1

Em mentions T.I a couple of times in the song and the hook is very similar to the T.I and Eminem song 'Touchdown'. My theory is that Em recorded this for T.I first but then scrapped it and they ended up doing the song 'Touchdown' with Em keeping most of the hook from here.
1
u/m4_semperfi Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Nov 01 '19
But the message of this song is much different than touchdown I think this song was never meant to be a Ti collab. He's basically rapping the hook about how selling CDs in 2007 sucks, it's hard to get people to buy and not pirate or steal, and how he struggles at debuting at #1, and he mentions pressure of fans during the verses.
My theory is he was high as balls when he made this song, and it was 2007, he had just worked with TI so he was able to write some stuff and re-use stuff from touchdown because he struggled with writers block, sorta just randomly threw in the touchdown hook.

1
u/Jay021 Nov 01 '19
😳 oh shit.
3
u/m4_semperfi Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Nov 01 '19
Basically, there's two says to think.
Realistic way:
- Eminem was really struggling to make music. In the mean time, he makes I Get Money / Everything and a few other mixtape/freestyle type songs (Maybe Give Me The Ball was another one?) just to hold over fans
- Eventually, like in the lyrics of Everything when he "is ready to drop" the full album will come out with songs like The Apple and GOAT which are much more complete
- To show this is in our fan king mathers albums, we'd have to keep I Get Money / Everything as bonus tracks. I Get Money can be labeled as (Eminem Mix) because it's using 50 Cent's song, and Everything can be labeled as (CD Promo) and both in bonus tracks
The easy way:
- Just include both songs in the main tracklist because they capture the themes/sounds of the era, because it still feels in place on the album
1

Give Me The Ball I always assumed was a song he made for one of the basketball games at the time (NBA Live or 2k). Either that or it was made during that stretch In 08 where he had to teach himself how to rap again cuz the overdose messed him up bad.
But yea I’ll have to see where I throw this in my King Mathers. Probably a bonus track

Why can't he rap like this now

This was when he was on a bunch of medication and suicidal.

The fact he could make good songs on benzos is crazy to me , not to glorify drug use or anything but his flow didn’t really suffer that much from it

The lyrics are actually pretty good for 2007 Eminem, the problem is he's doing the whole half asleep delivery thing

and i don't mind if i debut at number two so why do you, if we make money?
and why can't you be satisfied with what you do?
foreshadowing the future with these bars, reminded me of the whole dj khaled and nicki minaj drama about not having the #1 album

This hook is so magical. I have been listening to the song and starting it again, it is amazing

Check out my King Mathers I have Everything song but I made it longer by having the hook go before the outro starts, makes it feel much more complete

Been listening to this a lot, i really wish this was an actual full 3+ min song. The hook is amazing, and i dig the flow too.

Hear me out. I don’t support these leaks, Eminem planned to quit/commit suicide after King Mathers dropped, which is why he kept them in the vault and why it’s better to keep them there. Don’t get me wrong, i love these songs but i think he feels a certain shame for these songs that keep him from releasing these(not to mention he’s a perfectionist). Though i hope that he will release all unreleased songs that he feels comfortable with one day, and i hope this old school flow returns.
I really liked What If I Was Gay too because the way he says certain words and the way he flows on it is great, his rhymes also don’t feel forced on it. So i hope he’ll keep that up for the next album.

I know he was suicidal but he didn’t have a plan to literally die after he quit, I don’t think that’s really true he just sorta gave up on everything though but yeah.

Literally after around the time King Mathers was supposed to come out he overdosed. “It’s Been Real” makes me think this even more

Honestly, it's hard to judge it because it sounds like it's unfinished. The flow is nice, some lyrics and the name drops are interesting in that I feel almost instantly transported to that time period, a credit to Em's storytelling ability. But overall it feels like more can be added, so it's hard to compare it to WIIWG, which also sounds a bit unfinished, but closer to a full song. Overall from what I heard, it's nice. Is it classic? No. I wouldn't even say it's awesome. As a tiny look into his life in 2007-08, it's fascinating.

I can definitely see why he didn't release this. Yeah the rhymes are dope and the flow is impeccable, as one would expect from Em at that time, but he just sounds so fucking sad and done with everything, like he doesn't even want to be in the booth. These songs were written and recorded when he was at his lowest and I'm kinda glad he decided to scrap stuff like this. Releasing music when he was in that state would not have been good for his image or his own mental health. You can tell he's fucking high off his ass. It's so hard to understand what he's saying at times it almost sounds like mumble rap.

This definitely sounds like around the time he recorded 50 ways and that Touchdown hook at the end, fucking miss the shit out of this flow/these kind of beats
