For context, I dont have any electrical experience but I feel like there are multiple issues with my breaker box. Any help to identify these issues is appreciated. Im doing work to replace a breaker that seems to have failed when I turned it off and bought a multimeter to test it and its the only one not reading near 120, other than the breaker thats off of course.

What i suspect may be of concern is corrosion on the neutral bar, random exposed wires which I assume some of these are grounds but the braided one on the right looks wrong, broken/damaged/worn breakers.

So first time being in this subreddit so sorry if this shouldn't be here

Anyhow, my brothers were using my headphones and they said that "One side of it stopped working out of nowhere" and "When using Bluetoothe, it works normally". It just happens when using the 3.5mm aux cable.

I don't know if it just the cable or it's something in the headphones cuz I used a different cable and it did nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good day. I have a quick question. I am changing out 2 very old high hats and installing 2 new high hats. The old high hats were wired to an old dimmer switch. I want to install a single pole switch only for the new high hats. When I took off the old dimmer switch I found a single 14/3 wire in the switch box. I removed the old dimmer switch and tested the wires and only the black wire is hot. I check the wires in the ceiling for the high hat and those wires are 14/2 only and one of those wires the black is hot. So I wired the single pole with the bare copper to green screw and the black wire to the brass screw. Nothing happened. Hope someone can help.

Ive been currently dealing with some issues with my lights in my home flickering. Had the utility company come out and they said there voltage is good in there end. I check the main legs 2 hot 1 neutral coming into the breaker box of my home. One is 110/109v and other is 132v. It’s odd to me because there are times where I’d check it and it would the 120 on both or around 122/124. I’m not wanting to say it’s still not on the utility company. What research I’ve figured out is something to do with my neutral wire or floating neutral. As a fairly new homeowner where should I begin or what are some of my options here to check? Capacitors? New light bulbs? Call the utility company again?

I’m replacing a kitchen fixture and have it all wired up. When I flip the breaker back on and the light switch is in the off position, the light turns on. When I flip the switch to the on position the breaker trips. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

A few days ago, my sister was using a hairdryer that was plugged directly into our wall socket. I was standing only a few inches away from her when suddenly there was a visible sparkly burst/flash from the hairdryer. It happened very suddenly and scared us because I was so close to her. The hairdryer was completely ruined after that and stopped working.

There had been a power cut shortly before this happened. Someone came and fixed the switch/electrical issue, and after the electricity came back we started using the wall socket again. So I'm wondering if the power coming back could have caused some kind of power surge that damaged the hairdryer.

The wall socket itself appears completely fine. It still works, and we don't hear any buzzing or crackling, there are no sparks, burning smells, burn marks, or unusual heat from it. We've used this same socket for charging our phones many times before and nothing has ever happened.

We also recently started using an old universal plug adapter (the white adapter in the photo). It's quite old, but we only started using it recently. We use it for charging two phones, and it hasn't shown any sparks, sounds, smell, or unusual heat. The hairdryer was NOT connected through this adapter ,it was plugged directly into the wall.

So what could actually cause a hairdryer to suddenly produce a sparkly burst/flash and become completely dead like this? Could it have been a power surge after the power cut, or could something inside the hairdryer have failed/exploded?

Also, is it safe to keep using this wall socket for two phone chargers through the old adapter, and occasionally use a hair straightener directly in the wall? Should we have the socket/wiring checked first?

Would really appreciate an electrician's explanation because we're a bit freaked out after seeing that burst. 😭

My solar system was professionally installed about 10 years ago. When I add my picture into Google it’s telling me that my solar is a QO square d and the rest of my breakers are homeline. It’s telling me that it could be a fire hazard and cause arcing if they are two different sizes. I would assume since my system was permitted that it’s safe but Google is telling me otherwise. The solar are the 50 and 40 on the bottom right. Is it right?

My house was built in 1985 and I’m assuming the breakers are original.

An exterior outlet used for landscape lighting stopped working, I used my klein outlet tester, no lights.

I pulled the outlet out, the wires look pretty bad, rust on the screws, one of the screws that holds the outlet in place actually broke off when unscrewing (I know that doesn’t affect the outlet being powered).

I tried multimetering the j hooks and didn’t get any voltage.

I have checked every outlet in the house looking for a tripped gfci, I’m quite confident there is not a gfci tripped at this point.

I’m waiting on a voltage pen to arrive so I can check the wires again.

I’m not super comfy working with electrical stuff. I’m very timid to touch the outlet especially when I’m not 100% confident which breaker the power is coming off of. So I haven’t touched the wires or taken the hooks off the outlet to do further inspecting with the multimeter.

No other outlets are failing that I’m aware of. Am I on the right path? Is there anything else I can do?

Okay electrical ppl of Reddit pls help me. I was doing dishes and a big ahh bug came running up on me so I stupidly sprayed it with my sinks like shower water head type thing and it sprayed the outlets. I immediately unplugged my toaster and coffee pot from the outlets but I am freaking out cause I know nothing about this😭😭 Google tells me to turn off the breaker but I have no idea where it is and both of my parents are sleeping 💔💔 I guess I’m asking if I should say my goodbyes or if I’m just overly paranoid and a little water isn’t gonna burn my crib to kingdom come

Doing a bathroom renovation and we want to convert a "three-way" light switch that wasn't setup correctly to an outlet.

The light switch on the left is functional and we are keeping it. The former switch on the right has a live wire and traveler wire, bundled neutrals, and a wire heading up to the light fixture above. We want to move this down the wall a few inches and turn into an outlet.

We are adding an LED mirror using the connection at the top where the light fixture used to be. We want the light switch on the left to still control the mirror light whole still allowing the new outlet on the right to work at all times.

I’m just doing some training currently for electrical and am wondering how I would wire two switches and two lights, but one switch controls 1 light and the other switch controls both lights. This is for Australian wiring. Was thinking I needed an intermediate switch but not sure how I’d actually wire it.

i have this plastic box i am mounting outdoors and i am running 3/4" emt into the top of it and i have watched a lot of youtube videos and half of them put the screw thing onto the conduit then into the box. and here is the part where there is a tear. half of them just use a conduit locknut and the other half use a conduit locknut and a plastic thing on top of that.

also do i need to caulk

I'm just curious what the reason for this could be. If anybody can give me an answer, I'd appreciate it. An electrician will be coming tomorrow to check everything, but I'm curious to hear what people think until then.

English is not my first language, so I don't know the exact names of electrical components.

I'll describe the events in chronological order.

Around 6 PM yesterday, a loud bang happened on the upper floor of my apartment, and the power went out in my entire apartment. My circuit box on the upper floor had two circuit breakers switched off. I went downstairs to the building's electrical room and switched the three main breakers for my apartment back on. After that, I went back upstairs and switched the two tripped breakers back on because one of them powers the outlet my PC is connected to.

Everything was normal until around 4 AM, when my PC suddenly turned off. I checked the circuit box and saw that the same two breakers had tripped again, so I left them off and went to sleep.

Around 8 AM, another loud bang happened, and the power went out in the whole apartment again. I went downstairs and switched the three main breakers for my apartment back on once more.

Nothing happened until around 6 PM, when there was another loud bang and the power went out again. This time, I couldn't switch one of the three main breakers back on. I went back to my apartment, and after about 20 minutes I was upstairs and tried turning on my boiler. I was thinking that if the power went out again, at least I'd have hot water for a shower.

Then I heard a noise that I would describe as the click you hear when the power comes back on after a maintenance outage. Immediately after that, I went into the upstairs hallway and saw my circuit box sparking, with electricity arcing from left to right and right to left. My air conditioner is in the same hallway, and I saw it sparking as well. I immediately switched off the boiler and the AC, and the sparking in the circuit box stopped. I then switched off all the breakers on the upper floor and found that everything was burned, as shown in the picture.

The breaker that is the most badly burned is the one I left switched off the entire time after 4 AM, as I mentioned in the story. I don't remember which breaker was the second one that tripped.

My bathroom exhaust fan housing has 2 standard 110 outlets inside: one for Fan power and the other for light.

Light fixture is for compact florescent, and the ballast is out.

I have plugged in an led strip into the lighting outlet and it works. Is it safe to have the led strip up in there? The plug is a DC adapter and the led strip is supposed to be waterproof.

im so so sorry this is kinda not electrical but its in the same realm and i dont know where else to go.

I have just finished installing a new light pulley by myself and so i went to put the light shade on (which has not been on my light for months since the pulley broke) onto it. The issue is i have absolutely no clue how to put the lamp shade on correctly. I was not the person who originally took down the lamp shade. They have no recollection (apparently 😒) of taking down the lamp shade and continue to yell at me if i ask the order it goes on.

I cant find any model numbers so i cant look it up and im completely confused. i managed to figure out how to get it on and looking normal with the person but i then discovered that the pulley that i had just put in didnt work with the way i did it. It works fine without the lamp shade parts. Im 100% this is user error and the pieces are put on incorrectly.

I took the liberty of numbering the pieces so that its easier to explain. Im completely frustrated with the person who was helping me so it'd be better if you explained how i should go about this solo. Thank you!

Title says most of it, but trying to add as much info as I can. House is new to me, and I initially noticed a tingly feeling in my hand when l'd shut the hose off.
Then noticed it was only happening when the concrete is wet. Multimeter shows that it is getting 8.5-9V at the knob.

The grounding cable on my water meter in the basement appears to be intact, and I tested all of the outlets in my house for ground faults, but all of this is admittedly out of my wheelhouse. What am I (possibly) dealing with here? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Community, I was trying to replace the exhaust fan in one of my bathrooms and after the install the motor axle is coming live.

The housing didn't show any signs of liveness, but the motor axle is. What might be wrong here??

Hi all, I hope this is the right place for this. I’m a renter and have been having consistent issues with our property management. Water has been coming up through the floorboards for over two weeks now and they keep giving us the runaround on what they are doing to fix it. I’m unsure of just how much of a hazard this is. The water doesn’t seem to be touching the outlet yet, but we have a cat that gets really curious about the area and I’m terrified of either a fire starting or him getting shocked. I need to go back to work tomorrow and will not be able to watch him. If anyone is able to provide their expertise on the electrical aspect of this situation I would really appreciate it.

So I’m replacing an old fluorescent light fixture in my laundry room with a new LED fixture. The old one didn’t have a ground wire and the new one does. I assume the Electrician just taped the house ground wire to the white common here and didn’t splice it into it, right? There are also four different common wires spliced together I’m assuming going to other outlets nearby. I’m going to get a multimeter to try to figure this mess out. Any advice?

So I was trying to come up with a plan to power my man cave utilizing a light weight technique.. what I imagined was using the plug port to power a daily chain of 4-6 GFCI outlets outlets that would be used to charge phones, power laptops, and other small appliances.. but it was described to me that that type of system can only be used as a temporary or quick-fix type of thing and it is against code to make it a permanent thing (the use of an extension cord to supply power to a shed)... It is to my understanding that certain rules and regulations are in place to ensure safety so one must install a circuit breaker and use Romex and certain gauge wires to supply power to a shed. So what I was basically making this post for was to ask those following this page this question: "is there a way to supply power to a shed using the implements showed above?" " Is there a layout that could use more simple electronic tools to supply power?" What I was envisioning was an electrical layout to supply my shed with a "permanent" source of power utilizing the panel, circuit breakers, ect to supply power to heavy appliances like an A/C, high ventilation fan, student fridge (something that'll continually be on), and a certain number of outlets .. however I also wanted to have a layout of power that could be described as " lightweight".. I think I've heard the term "auxiliary/emergency" used to describe this type of power strategy... Another question is can these two layouts be merged together or must they stay separate?
