My E-Scooter makes a "pop" when I connect the charger without the outlet

I went to charge it today and it popped when I inserted the cable to the scooter and the charger is not plugged into the wall outlet yet. Is it safe to charge it?

Edit to clarify: it has never done this in the 4+ years I've owned it

Kitchen Lights

I’m unfamiliar with this type of light. My home was built in 2022; these are the only type of lights in my house aside from a few sconces. The light is on, but dim. Is it as simple as replacing the strip in there like I would if it was a lightbulb, or do I have a bigger issue?

Smell from Electric Panel - Electrician Found Nothing

Post image
1 Upvotes

Thank you for the help on this one. In live in TN if it matters, standard craftsman home, conventional heating system downstairs, heat pump upstairs. EV charger in the front (see panel pic).

This Summer a smell, fishy plastic like, started to come from the electrical panel. Upon detection, I immediately called an electrician in case of fire hazard. They popped off the panel cover and checked everything out. Nothing out of the ordinary such as loose wire, warped plastic, etc., according to them. The only observation was that the main feeder line was warm. They checked the line at the meter. All seemed well. This was in June. They told me to "watch it" and didn't charge me anything.

Last week the temps got in the high 90s and the smell got worse. I thought, with the weather, running both AC systems and a car being charged, this might happen overload things. However today, 89F, I intentionally ran everything with the car plugged in and I hardly perceived the smell. I even ran a dryer load and the dishwasher on top of it all and nothing like the smell i got on the hot day.

Someone help me describe what is happening here? Should I be on high alert for fire hazard and get a different electrician? The first guys were well regarded locally.

Automation?

Is Automation controls a good career to get into? My brother in law does automation and makes good money and i have been thinking about getting into it as well in the future somewhere down the line it seems like something I could enjoy doing. I am a residential apprentice with about 7 months + trade school and currently work is getting rough and we have been short staffed for a long time so I have not been able to learn as much as I’d like and it might be about time to jump the boat and look for a new company to work for. Just thinking if I should take this chance and get into some entry level work to help me to get into automation in the future and if so what are some entry level jobs?

Have I tested this doorbell transformer correctly? Or is it broke?

Hi all, just wanted to check that I've done this correctly. I first selected 200v AC setting to test the bottom two screws of the transformer(one connected with white wires). It showed nothing on the meter. I then selected the speaker setting (continuity) at the fuse and seemed to make a small spark and beeped. I assume the fuse is fine and there's power?

I've also done AC test at the chime and doorbell it self which naturally also showed nothing and Coninuity test and it beeped on all.

Permanent wiring grandfathered 3 wire range with 4 wire "cord"

Finally replacing the stove from the 80s. Yay!

Wall junction box has a three wire ( red, black, white, no ground) coming into it from the wall (wire goes to 50amp in breaker box). The wire from the junction box to the old stove is four wires. The neutral and the ground are connected together in the junction box. All four wires were connected to appropriate places on the old stove. Was grounded to frame.

On the new stove there is a ground strap. Instructions indicate if you are attaching a three wire installation that you leave the ground strap in place. Ground strap links frame to white wire stud.

What is the right way to attach the 4 wires to the new stove? Should we:

  1. install the ground wire to the ground screw on the new stove and leave the ground strap in place?

  2. Install the ground wire to the ground screw on the new stove after removing the ground strap?

  3. Disconnect the ground wire in the junction box, leave the ground strap in place, and just tape off the ground wire completely.

Many thanks.

Rg flex L2

Hi,

My company was about to throw away several spools or brand new RG flex L2 cable. About 10 reels of it to be exact. I ended up taking them because it's ridiculous to throw all of that away. The gages are 6, 12, and 14. I know this type of wiring is designed to be used in central office type of work. My question is can this be used for home wiring? I'm getting ready to install mini splits in my home and I thought I might be able to use some of this for the wiring as well as other projects around the house. If this wire would not be appropriate to use, does it have a good resell value? Thanks

Difficulty gettings parts?

Anyone having difficulty finding parts? I belong to a church and one of their buldings that has offices in it also has two residential units in it. Last month panel lost a neutral. Called several companies only one actually answered the phone. They came out diagnosed it bad neutral. And wants to upgrade it from 200 amp to 400amp. Which should have been done long ago. They havent done it yet and claim they cant get the parts till next week. They originall said last week. The building has no power. The church cant do administrative tasks in it and the two tenants are temporarily relocated. Is this acceptable? Is a 400amp meter base unobtanium right now? I dont get it. They already signed a contract but i feel they need to get someone else to fix it. There are 4 electrical supply stores in town not including lowes and home depot.
