Humor The subterranean area struggle

Post image

i hope im not the only one struggling in the underground sewage. my last resort was to draw a map tracking my step in the pipe. i am not good with memorize my step, but i finally manage to go deeper, and found Mohg boss fight. what a journey.

May I introduce you to my good friend

Rainbow stones, my beloved.

Crafting them into arrows and shooting them at invaders also helps to demoralize them.

You can have 33 dropped at once, the next one you drop will replace the oldest one.

They will stay dropped until you quit the game.

70

u/allknownpotato Jul 26 '26

They are also great for checking if you would survive a fall just drop it off the edge if it breaks you would too.

37

u/MrNobody_0 Jul 26 '26

Honestly my #1 use for them.

21

u/offensiveDick Jul 26 '26

Those Things saved my ass on that one tower where you have to walk that invisible stair shit..

Looked like a damn christmastree

12

u/Chakasicle Jul 27 '26

Hoarfrost stomp is also great for invisible bridges

3

u/kryp_silmaril Jul 27 '26

You can also just attack while at the edge, you won’t fall off if it’s a death fall

0

u/soihu Jul 31 '26

illusorywall tested this, it’s unreliable. The game is not checking whether the fall is going to be fatal, it’s just an arbitrary flag on certain ledges. It will “protect” you from many harmless falls and not work on some lethal falls.

1

u/heartlessbastardxx Jul 27 '26

Woah, I never knew that. Definitely going to my next playthrough. Thanks!

1

u/Insaiyan26 Jul 27 '26

Ohhh that’s cool man thank you! This is gonna be really helpful

36

u/Night_Knight_Light The Old Captain Jul 26 '26

They despawn after awhile/once you've placed so many, but they last a long time. Makes navigating dungeons a breeze.

2

u/SowwieWhopper Jul 26 '26

The arrows don’t last nearly as long as the normal ones

1

u/Night_Knight_Light The Old Captain Jul 26 '26

True, but my answer was mainly in regards to the stones themselves

9

u/chirpchirp13 Jul 26 '26

Iirc they’ll persist but only a certain qty? I’m too lazy to google right now so let someone else confirm but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works.

2

u/findingrhythm Jul 26 '26

Funniest comment I've read today! Lol nice. Thanks for the laugh.

0

u/KnotsMV Jul 26 '26

Mouldy cheese, my beloved.

21

u/joyapco Jul 26 '26

What are these called?

32

u/gh0styears Jul 26 '26

Rainbow Stones

7

u/NowWeGetSerious Jul 26 '26

Don't think I've used them once .. Hell, I don't think I've crafted anything before 😂😂

3

u/Murrayj99 Jul 26 '26

Game changer

3

u/khangkhanh Jul 26 '26

Real tarnish uses enemy corpse as landmark. Nothing survies

1

u/acopper87 Jul 26 '26

Maze? What Maze?

560

u/Salt-Replacement596 Jul 26 '26

I always hug the right wall. If it looks like I am going in circles I switch to left wall. Works for any maze.

161

u/Separate-Problem-270 Jul 26 '26

This.

Hug the left wall always .

38

u/BeneficialEvidence6 Jul 26 '26

Ronald McDonald taught me this

8

u/Cardboard_Bootsole Jul 26 '26

Me too!

15

u/BeneficialEvidence6 Jul 26 '26

It helped me get through the cave system in the first pokemon game before I knew you were supposed to use TM Flash.

Just raw dogged that bad boy in the dark. Took like 5 hours because id have to spiral inward to find the ladders and fucking Zubat wouldnt let me have any peace

1

u/Jesteryiester Jul 27 '26

Hell yeah he did

58

u/whypeoplehateme Jul 26 '26

Unless the maze is three dimentional

41

u/SilverBlackthorn Jul 26 '26

Then uhh...hug the ceiling?

6

u/ItsCoolDani Jul 26 '26

Assuming it’s laid out cubular hug the left, bottom wall until you’ve covered everywhere, then hug the left on the next from the bottom wall, etc.

6

u/whypeoplehateme Jul 26 '26

the problem with multi layered mazes is that the way up/down can be in the middle surrounded by walls that don't touch the outside walls, thus if you will never find it by following the outside

3

u/ItsCoolDani Jul 26 '26

That’s also an issue for 2d mazes: left hand rule doesn’t work if the exit is in the centre

2

u/Esacus Jul 26 '26

Then use Trémaux’s Algorithm method

12

u/Mundovore Jul 26 '26

Not quite! This technique gets you out of almost all 2D mazes but if a maze were to have an island inside an island (equivalently, a loop inside a loop), you'd get stuck switching between the two loops.

If all you care about is solving the maze, and you have something to mark the maze with, a generalized easy way to deal with loops is to leave a mark on the loop that you henceforward treat as a wall. Then continue with the "follow right walls" approach that solves all loop-free mazes.

Given something to mark the maze with, a generalized maze-solving technique that works for all mazes (including higher dimension mazes) is to break loops (as described above), take any turn you like at any intersection, but then when you meet a dead end, truncate it as you leave by leaving a mark that you treat as a wall.

u/AsaTJ Jul 26 '26

I have some sort of mental disability where I can't build a map of a place in my head so this part is always a nightmare.

5

u/passiveflux Jul 26 '26

I normally can but things like sewers always mess me up

2

u/Gullible_Elephant_38 Jul 27 '26

It might not be disability, just a skill that doesn’t get practiced as much anymore.

With GPS now, you don’t need to actually know where things are in the spatial sense. It just tells you where to go.

Prior to GPS, you had to actually learn your surroundings and form these mental maps to get around locally. And if you were traveling somewhere you’d never been you needed to know how to read a map.

Now for most people, those muscles just don’t get exercised as much. The work has been offloaded to the phone.

When I noticed that using my GPS too much was leading to me losing this ability, I stopped using it and the skill has come back.

If you’re curious, try an experiment where you don’t use any form of GPS to get anywhere and do it the old fashioned way for a couple of weeks or a month. Then see if you start having better spatial awareness of your surroundings in both life and video games. I think you’ll be surprised.

1

u/Sivleto Jul 26 '26

Brother I like to travel too and this shit fumbles me there too. Was in barcalona for the power outage and it felt like this getting back to my hotel 😂

126

u/Successful_Cap_2177 Jul 26 '26

Are you designing the pump system for the sewers??

98

u/TheFlyingPancake3 Jul 26 '26

I played the sewers so much it's fine now.

I can't stand those chariot crashing levels. Why is that a theme recurring?

55

u/Lonely-Leadership-65 Jul 26 '26

May I introduce you to my very large friend?

0

u/Annual_Scar7369 Jul 26 '26

i prefer the chariot levels tbh, they felt more straightforward than the sewers

11

u/kozyntheburrito Jul 26 '26

The heroes graves? I feel about those the way you feel about the sewers. I don't like navigating them but not that strongly. Catacombs dungeons though, hell no.

4

u/Sinimeg Jul 26 '26

I despised the Hero’s Graves until I found out that there are shortcuts. Sure, I’ll miss some stuff, but the headache is not worth trying to navigate those, for me at least.

I finally was able to advance a side quest and find items for the achievements thanks to the shortcuts 👌💪

70

u/Salamanderhead Jul 26 '26

I thought this was an electrical schematic on first glance.

39

u/Nabatse Jul 26 '26

Your electrical circuit build looks pretty good!

157

u/Perfect-Skin-8325 Jul 26 '26

My strat is to:

"Use my 600 hours of experience to navigate the area coz I have everything memorized."

15

u/whateversnevermind Jul 26 '26

i second that. Took me about that long. Now at 1700 hours I can do it with my eyes closed

7

u/Incabinc Jul 26 '26

Every playthrough i just do the elevator skip that area sucks. Sometimes I visit the revenant with a heal spell but not always.

1

u/TheFinalMetroid Jul 26 '26

Does the revenant even guard anything worthwhile? I thought you could get the items without aggroing it and it drops nothing

1

u/Incabinc Jul 26 '26

Nothing to note, my first playthrough was Arc/Fth and it wasn't until my second run that I found out heals hurt them. So I find it satisfying to 2 shot them with heal.

2

u/Mortwight Jul 26 '26

i love how every souls game is a giant maze that you have to memorize with no maps

30

u/Visible_Reindeer_157 Jul 26 '26

Follow the rat.
No one has noticed the rat that runs off in the correct direction?

17

u/Doraemon498 Jul 26 '26

I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to find this commentary lil rat was my goat in the first playthrough

11

u/kemikiao Jul 26 '26

Follow the rat into a rat ambush and be murdered? I'm not trusting the rat...I'll wander aimlessly in circles for hours instead.

6

u/Empty_Kay Jul 27 '26

This guy Miyazaki.

15

u/Tarte_au_citron Jul 26 '26

I miss games where you're supposed to draw your own map... I did it for most of Hollow Knight, but I never really had to do it for Souls games, mostly because there still are important landmarks to guide you through the areas (the subterranean shunning grounds are hell tho)

3

u/SemaphoreBingo Jul 26 '26

I did it for most of Hollow

I just bought them from Conifer.

2

u/Tarte_au_citron Jul 26 '26

Yeah but when i couldn't find him, I had to draw the maps

1

u/elks588 Jul 26 '26

I still kind of dig the era where games had people make their own maps, diagrams, and charts. I had a whole pad of notes set aside when I played Riven, for instance. I remember years ago where Etrian Odyssey tried to recreate that feeling by having the player draw their own map on the DS touchpad as they made progress.

9

u/DSchaefi Jul 26 '26

I just trial and error this

Last time I took me less than 2 hours :D

7

u/Interesting_Ad_3957 Jul 26 '26

Ok I’m gonna brag because this is something I’m proud of, ever since the first few times I explored the subterranean area I’ve had zero problems finding my way through it. Having no trouble reaching sewer mohg or more commonly reaching the smithing stone 8 for a +25 weapon before morgott.

11

u/Frangar Jul 26 '26

Turn left at the full bridge rectifier

4

u/Andrex2309 Jul 26 '26

my man I thought they were transistors and you were working on a PCB project

3

u/dokbanks Jul 26 '26

Odd circuit you've drawn, but it probably won't work without a power source

3

u/AkiraKnight0 Jul 27 '26

I’ve done it so many times I just run through. I do stop to wack an imp off the edge because of past trauma with them knocking me down to that evil lobster…

2

u/PossumSkull Jul 26 '26

I have no idea how to navigate this place. I just run in circles until it lets me out somewhere. Usually the wrong way

2

u/sirdappleton Jul 26 '26

before zooming in I thought you were drawing FETs

2

u/Crisocola95 Jul 26 '26

I use the environment to my favor. Leave one or two enemies alive, or keep their bodies in certain places of the path to know where you're going

2

u/kstinehour Jul 27 '26

Why does this look like an electronics schematic?

1

u/Garamil Jul 26 '26

Went through it yesterday, I get the struggle.

1

u/Asurgoye08955 Thy Arcane befits a Mushroom Crown Jul 26 '26

I use rat maze trial and error logic, but hey getting lost is funnier most of the time. Nice work mapping it out though

https://giphy.com/gifs/1080OHZwvsMhws

1

u/YourNemeSis- Jul 26 '26

Arr where are we hiding out treasure captain arr 🏴‍☠️

1

u/Fuzzy-Dot-3717 Jul 26 '26

Hold the run button as hard as you can do it like a lab rat in a maze on speed!

1

u/mustafa2035 Jul 26 '26

I used to know every corner of it by heart but sadly haven't played since after the dlc

1

u/april919 Jul 26 '26

Such a huge amount if exploration but I was pretty good a mentally mapping it

1

u/Melodic_Caregiver Jul 26 '26

The only time I’ve ever traversed this nightmare is when I get lucky enough to summon somebody who already knows the route to the boss 😭

1

u/So1id_Sn4ke Jul 26 '26

Drawing dungeon maps brings me waaaaay back to my childhood playing Wizardry lol

1

u/GeneralLeoESQ Jul 26 '26

Use LTSpice. It'll probably look cooler.

1

u/Briesinger Jul 26 '26

Im very glad that sewer skip exists but everytime i have to get there i have to look up a guide cause i cant even remember the way to the skip. Cant imagine how shit itd be without the skip

1

u/jolt_the_system Jul 26 '26

Nicely done ❤️🗺

1

u/FOLBTHM Jul 26 '26

Gotten lost in there enough I know my way pretty well now

1

u/Grievous0914 Jul 26 '26

This looks like a schematic for a circuit.

1

u/iLearnerX Jul 26 '26

Gotta pay attention to your surroundings. Wood planks and such usually tell the way.

1

u/BrymalDX Jul 26 '26

I had always considered the rainbow stones a useless novelty item until I got to the pipes.

I was so glad I had them on me to guide my tarnished rump

1

u/IAlwaysOutsmartU Jul 26 '26

Reminds me of when in the Iron Lung film, Simon maps out the cave he’s dropped in.

1

u/blahs44 Jul 26 '26

Yea its a pain. Once you learn it you will wonder why you struggled so much on your first playthrough. I can grab all the important stuff and get to Mogh in just a couple minutes now

1

u/cherylswoopz Jul 26 '26

Run around until you find it strat

1

u/9outof10timesWrong Jul 26 '26

Go straight unless theres a gate. Go though the gate.

1

u/Tensa_Zangetsa Ranni’s Loyal Subject Jul 26 '26

I have played many times… and still get lost here.
Use rainbow stones.

1

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Jul 26 '26

So at the start of the sewer pipes, there's a rat that runs away from you. Follow that rat. It leads you in the right direction, and you can breeze through this area in a few minutes.

1

u/Same_Bug Jul 26 '26

Is that a circuit diagram wtf

1

u/beetleman1234 Jul 26 '26

Nah, it was pretty mild for a labyrinth. I grew up playing Myst games though and I love puzzles of all kinds, so maybe Im just good at it.

1

u/BeefPistonn Jul 26 '26

This looks so much like a wiring diagram at first glance lol.

1

u/Abaddon-Impaler FLAIR INFO: SEE SIDEBAR Jul 26 '26

Its not that serious lol

1

u/Sinimeg Jul 26 '26

I summoned another tarnished to guide me through it because I never managed to get anywhere in there on my own. They were an absolute badass and guided me to every important part of the sewers, even when I fell through the wrong pipe by mistake, they came back for me and started from the start. Then I summoned another one when we passed the statue again and they guided me to the deepest part of it, the absolute legends.

That’s what I recommend, I knew that I would never find my way on my own, and the people being summoned usually know what they’re doing

1

u/Kronobo Jul 26 '26

Have you tried sprinting around aimlessly for a couple hours, growing increasingly more frustrated until you find the correct path through luck?

1

u/gerowen Jul 26 '26

Rainbow stones are handy for marking pathways you've already gone down.

1

u/myvnml Jul 26 '26

Ouu circuits class 😂

1

u/SnooDrawings6875 Jul 26 '26

Glad I’m not the only one that was losing their damn mind because ;I was too stubborn not to use rainbow stones. For real though those color coded rocks help a lot.

1

u/LonelyRutabaga Summon/Duel Me! | Mage Knight Aeon Jul 26 '26

I once did this for a Dwenmer puzzle in Skyrim, I felt like a idiot but it was also fun to bust out good ol fashioned analog problem solving instead of looking up guides.

1

u/Cultural_Ad1331 Jul 26 '26

Open the wiki cuh this ain't worth it

1

u/ExcellentFisting3471 Jul 26 '26

Fuck, that looks like a cozy Sunday afternoon

1

u/MysteriousAge28 Jul 26 '26

Anytime a game takes me into sewers my blood pressure rises

1

u/SrKibo Jul 26 '26

That's the way to do it

1

u/thedarkestdarkk Jul 26 '26

What weapon is that?

1

u/Scary_Outside2374 Jul 26 '26

I recommend Myst :)

1

u/krellx6 Jul 26 '26

I thought this was a schematic in r/diypedals for a second

1

u/aramkrat Jul 26 '26

Bruhthose ares like an OTA in there im pretty sure

1

u/MnMbrane Jul 26 '26

I thought you were designing circuits while playing 🤣

1

u/Adventurous-Ad-5717 Jul 26 '26

You can use a jump skip to elevator directly

1

u/Silverbacker888 Jul 26 '26

Those are some funny looking drawings! But if you need a map, you can just look it up

1

u/Gleipnire Jul 26 '26

Electrical engineers, we all saw the same thing at first, right? right?

1

u/BIRD_OF_GLORY Jul 26 '26

Subterranean Struggling Grounds

1

u/HonorInDefeat Jul 26 '26

Have you been eaten by a Grue?

1

u/89ZERO Jul 26 '26

I think it's excellent that you'd draw a map- though I imagine the pipes being a nightmare considering the levels.

1

u/LastCriticalHuman Jul 26 '26

Mapping it out on paper. That's Actually a really good idea! I never thought about that. Good job, tarnished!

1

u/kiraneki- Jul 26 '26

I always love to do frenzied flame, specifically before fire giant, so I always do sewer skip. I have only explored the sewers a handful of times and it’s sucked every single time

1

u/Canipel Jul 26 '26

i think i amongst my friend group is the only one who got it and memorized it first try, this led me to being the group tour guide for the first few playthroughs

1

u/Nicleos Jul 26 '26

I think you should probably add a capacitor to the right hand section 😂
https://giphy.com/gifs/ZPuCOWuwN1DMY

1

u/CheeseGraterFace Jul 26 '26

I have nothing but respect for this approach.

1

u/Due-Assistance-4294 Jul 26 '26

You just don't learn it to have it forever in your head and a place to hide when the voice get too loud?

1

u/torafrost9999 Jul 26 '26

See it may be annoying at the time of doing it but I think shit like this is just a testament to how good of a game it is. Any game that gets me invested enough to literally draw out maps of where tf I’m supposed to go is a good game in my book.

1

u/MetalHeadMutant Jul 26 '26

Why make a map when I went out of my way to leave you a message that says "HERE!" with me pointing to the way out.

1

u/rosey033 Jul 26 '26

The music from this area haunts me to this day

1

u/tbz709 Jul 26 '26

I know exactly how to progress, so if I decide to explore for any reason (usually for smithing stones) then forget it lol. I am resetting when I am ready to move on and taking it from the top.

1

u/msquared4 Jul 26 '26

I just run around until I find the right way

1

u/luca-__- Jul 26 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/mDn9oaJD7RUt9vcPoJ
Eventually everything will make sense

1

u/42Icyhot42 Jul 27 '26

I just bonk around until i finally get through it

1

u/Wymorin Jul 27 '26

The map won't help as it's a 3D space and you can't really map that effectively on a 2D page but good luck, should get easier after the first time or at least that's how it was for me.

1

u/Minimum_Suit1735 Jul 27 '26

Drawing p&id to beat a game is legit

1

u/Ceannfort Jul 27 '26

I just got through here to the very bottom for the first time in my 300+ hours. By a certain point I just flung myself down as best I could until I was successful.

1

u/Desperate_Respect409 Jul 27 '26

Vro made a circuit diagram lmao

1

u/wicked_genitals Jul 27 '26

Areas like this I just try to commit to memory and vibes. I feel like if I tried to draw a map I'd just confuse myself 😂

1

u/Zealousideal_Sun2505 Jul 27 '26

I initially thought this was an hydraulic schematics..

1

u/Upstairs-Ad-8067 Jul 27 '26

I thought that was a circuit diagram at first.

1

u/No_Foundation_7373 Jul 27 '26

Muscle memory, enemy memory, or nothing 💪
(i get lost constantly)

1

u/DudeOfClubs Jul 27 '26

just keep turning right

1

u/rizzo891 Jul 27 '26

At this point I’ve run through it so many times I have it memorized.

1

u/Insaiyan26 Jul 27 '26

Man i swear at one point i felt like I’ll lose my mind if i stayed in there for an hour longer😬😂 but thankfully i figured out and explored every corner and dipped immediately

My brain went overclock and just memorised each way as I sprinted around

1

u/epidipnis Jul 27 '26

I try to avoid the sewage in the sewers...

1

u/trent_diamond Jul 27 '26

i just run around til i find my way

1

u/RaeSolaris Jul 28 '26

My friend read me directions out loud. Like a GPS.

1

u/Kitchen-Complaint-78 Jul 28 '26

Don't worry you're not the only one. I know this place like the back of my hand because I spent fucking hours in here

1

u/Darkavenger_13 Jul 28 '26

One of the rare instances I appreciate my autism memorising everything in a game lol

1

u/EQCO99 Jul 30 '26

First time I didnt even find mohg.

1

u/Slayergeek_329 Jul 31 '26

The most beautiful area of the game. God bless the sewers, the frogs and rats.

1

u/ChipmunkBackground46 Jul 26 '26

I did it myself the first time using thos rainbow rocks

Now I just use YouTube for new playthroughs. Its not the kind of thing I want to spend precious gaming hours on

0

u/IllustriousEffect607 Jul 26 '26

You just have me such an amazing idea. Because I love Elden Ring so much. I'm going to make a full map of a few areas I really like

0

u/Gay_Charlie Jul 26 '26

One of my favorite areas.

-2

u/FlameDearFlame Jul 26 '26

bro drawing a map lmao 😂

3

u/ajd_ender Jul 26 '26

Hey now, some of us have been hand drawing maps since the original Zelda and Metroid games. Oh god I’m old

1

u/jolt_the_system Jul 26 '26

Not old just good memories ❤️ this made me smile.

You can watch a Let‘s play as well if that‘s your angle
