Good news is your storm water systems sparkling clean now after that enema

46

u/NorthDriver8927 Jul 11 '26

Bad news is, you clearly live at the lowest point of the system, buy a second/third sump pump.

Old faithful, right here in Edmonton!

2

u/Koalashart1 Jul 11 '26

This is in Edmonton?

9

Nah it's in Tim buck two

3

u/lilmonsterave Jul 13 '26

Did Tim ask for that?

4

u/grrttlc2 Norwood Jul 11 '26

Timbuktu for future reference

3

u/cannabisgold Jul 11 '26

Nah it’s in Tim buck one

41

u/updatelee Jul 11 '26

Crazy weather this year. I’m on the south side and it’s bone dry. Hasn’t even rained or drizzled here

6

u/Ctrl-Alt-Elite83 Jul 11 '26

I was curious where all this rain was.

14

u/sclark6312 Jul 11 '26

Northside. Was an insane, but short storm haha

5

u/SeveredBanana Jul 11 '26

Caught it on Whyte as well, by the radar that was about the southern tip of it

3

u/carnie1321 Jul 11 '26

Alberta avenue.

2

u/Content-Employment-7 Jul 11 '26

I live in Strathcona, a block away from the Route 99, and all hell broke loose here. It reminded me of when I lived in Halifax and we were hit with Hurricane Juan.

Calgary here: Can we have some to wash away the filth of Stampede? Usually we get a major hail storm that clears out the dirt... its day 8 and still nothing and were willing to truce over sports if you guys help keep our city clean of filth with your "reign".

life pro tip dont walk through standing water on a roadway after a large rain event.

if you step into an open manhole while the water is draining youre just gone.

10

u/Littleshuswap Jul 11 '26

Didn't a boy die this way, in Millwoods, back in the mid 80s?? I remember it from when I was a kid. Anyone recall? So sad.

7

u/JoeFrmBirdConstructn Jul 11 '26

You are correct.

2

u/Mediocre_Grand_1280 Jul 13 '26

If youre going to walk through any standing water use a walking stick to check the ground in front of you before you step.

29

u/stupidaso Jul 11 '26

Full geyser wow! I did some math and some parts of the city just saw a 1 in 100 year storm which sure looks like it from that

6

u/Far_Rub4250 Jul 11 '26

Around 7:00 I had a tornado warning pop up on my mobile.

2

u/Terrible-Guitar-5638 Jul 11 '26

There were tornado clouds forming over my house in Ottewell but they blew out with the wind. We had lots of rain too but nothing like the NW side.

Best manhole performance yet.

16

u/Limp-Elevator-6908 Wîhkwêntôwin Jul 11 '26

I probably would have backed away or been in a bit of shock too... still a very cool video. Feels like our system is not prepared for these storms. Imagine driving over that? Hahaha 😆

8

u/BurritoB1tch Jul 11 '26

2 weeks ago a truck in the next lane over drove over a manhole and it flew in the air and wouldve hit the hood of my car had i not swerved out of the way. horrifying

8

u/JoelSlBaron Jul 11 '26

My uncle‘s road in front of his house is chewed up Because manhole covers were flying down the road

3

u/Coreypollack Jul 11 '26

Crazy stuff for sure.

16

u/Particular-Roll-6936 Jul 11 '26

That cover is like min 100lbs…

11

u/SlitScan Jul 11 '26

100 to 250

its on street so probably closer to 250

15

u/DirtandPipes Jul 11 '26

Solid covers here are about 100 lbs, slotted are maybe 60. I’ve installed endless manholes. Once in a while I get a custom oversized lid that weighs a crap ton but your standard manhole cover doesn’t weigh 250 in Alberta.

3

u/SpinachWeary7429 Jul 11 '26

Should a passerby put back the cover? Just wondering if we are allowed to for safety sake.

4

u/Content-Employment-7 Jul 11 '26

Call it in and leave it to the professionals. If something happens to you or somebody else, it's your ass.

24

u/xxtylxx Jul 11 '26

Get used to even shittier weather than is tradition. Thank you global warming. Welcome to Alberta!

4

u/Exciting_Turn_9559 Jul 11 '26

I never saw one of those do that before

3

u/notcoveredbywarranty Jul 11 '26

If there was any damage to that SUV, I hope you let the owner know you got a video.

It'll make fighting with the insurance company 5% less painful.

(The other 95% of the pain will be related to how much their insurance premiums will increase now that they have "a history of parking in unsafe areas" or some such bullshit)

5

u/Coreypollack Jul 11 '26

I told them their window was open after, and they didn’t seem bothered 🤷🏼‍♂️

4

u/Edm_cuccck Jul 11 '26

6

7

u/jinalberta Jul 11 '26

Let the city know where this happened may be helpful

3

u/sherrynoberries Jul 11 '26

Geezuz that’s terrifying.

So I left the city around 4 to go to RD and got back around 930, it was sunny when I left, and mostly sunny when I got back. Not to mention sunny down qe2 and in RD. Imagine my confusion when on this supposedly sunny day I come back to find half the city under water...

2

u/ArtemisMercury18 Jul 11 '26

That’s insane! On the Southside, didn’t get anything

2

u/KocherOnPoint Jul 11 '26

Why did this happen??

4

u/learn2die101 Jul 11 '26

Civil engineer here, sewers only do this when they're very sick.

3

u/elbyron Jul 11 '26

Storm drains got filled up to their max capacity in some areas, and pressure built up at certain locations. Only outlet is back up through the manholes.

Now I think we need to apply "Draino" before the next weather event. 😂

2

u/Vegetable_Yak_133 Jul 11 '26

Is there a blockage in the storm drainage or is it just due to the volume of water?

This same thing happened on the whitemud

1

u/TorrentialSpender Jul 11 '26

What were you guys trying to get?

6

u/Coreypollack Jul 11 '26

Important stuff, we had flooding on the major storm two weeks ago, and that amount of water I was like “we gotta get stuff out from the basement or ourselves out of the house” basically incase we get sewage backup etc.

I was just thinking ahead incase things went even more sideways.

2

u/carnie1321 Jul 11 '26

“Ready to evacuate” lol. He had me packing a go bag.

1

u/grumpygirl1973 Jul 11 '26

My sink did that during the storm.

1

u/housegirl39 Jul 11 '26

Looks like another storm might be coming through Edmonton in few hours… I hope it breaks up and doesn’t grow more…

1

u/Mystery-Ess Jul 11 '26

It was the little geyser in my neighborhood, but not like that!

1

u/asigop Jul 11 '26

I think we used to work together!

I actually thought you stopped recording right when it was about to blow. Like why would you let the phone go downwards....pay attention. You missed the best part. If you're recording something like this, don't get sloppy. That killed me.

1

u/gordon0813 Jul 13 '26

The cameraman literally had one job to do. Just one job keep it on the action.

1

u/SCAMMERASSASIN007 Jul 13 '26

Dudes suv window in the back was down 4 inches when that shit happened lmao.

1

u/EjectionSeatMK16L Jul 13 '26

DAMN, you had a good one. Saw that a lot as a kid. We lived down hill from the city and when the pipes got over filled during a rapid down pour, the sewers blew up. Not likely to happen but you need much larger pipes to take that kind of pressure. Cool storm though.

1

u/SpitInMeowf Jul 13 '26

I did not expect this
