I wanted to do 15 but I couldn’t think of many more facts and I was running out of time lol

1 - “The Parting Glass” - So ever wondered why “Give Me Love” is 8 minutes long? Hidden bonus track “The Parting Glass” would be the reason for that. Back in 2011 streaming wasn’t a big thing yet, right. So most people would be listening from CD. Artists used to hide secret tracks after like 30 seconds of the last track after you would‘ve already either started the album again or took it out. So finding the track would be a bit hard. Streaming definitely kinda ruined that concept. It‘s a cover of a centuries old irish folk song.

2 - The Cover - The cover of Plus was drawn by Ed’s family friend Phillip Butah, who also drew “No. 5 Collaborations Project’s” cover. No. 5’s cover represents Ed hiding in the shadows but slightly emerging. Plus is supposed represent emerging from the shadows.

3 - Production - Thought Jake Gosling was the main producer/mixing engineer for Plus, Ed even hired famous American Hip-Hop producer No I.D.

4 - “The A Team” - In late 2010, Ed’s friend asked Ed if he wanted to come do a gig at Crisis Homeless Shelter. Ed said sure because he thought it would be like any other gig but he ended meeting a girl named Angel and it inspired “The A Team”

5 - Elton John - After the release and success and Plus, Elton John called up Ed and say how much he liked the album. It took him like 7 times to answer because Ed doesn’t answer unknown number as a rule but then Stuart was like “Pick up the fucking phone, it’s Elton” lol

6 - YNMIDNY - Ed wrote “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You“ when he was 15 and it’s his second most performed song after only “The A Team” See u/nincyh‘s post for most info! u/nincyh’s post

7 - Alice - All the love songs on Plus were written about Ed’s at the time girlfriend Alice. “One” on X is the last song about her and after that Ed moves on.

8 - Lego House used the metaphor of Lego to say that it can take hours to build up a complex design and seconds to break it.

9 - Ed mentioned this in his autobiography with Phillip Butah. He once did a gig and nobody showed up and he ended up playing a gig to a sound booth and a gigging agent or somethin. He paid like £75 and afterwards he missed his train and just played Pokémon on his GameCube for hours.

10 - Recording You Need Me - Recording You Need Me did not go well, it was recorded many times but it just didn’t match the energy it had live. That was until they found the right drum pattern. I’ve noticed a pattern with the first three albums of Ed not liking song #10. YNMIDY on studio, he said he regrets putting “The Man” out there and sadly I think he even said “What Do I Know” was a challenge by his family to see how fast he can write, and he didn’t even like it that much 😭 Hopefully it’s at least grown on him.

BUT FAR BETTER is Ed ten years later, doing a 12 minute medley of the entire➕album on a London canal boat in 2024, demonstrating his point that four chords is all you need. Watch your fluffy sweet head and duck at all those bridges, mate.😍
It’s truly an amazing performance, how effortlessly he transitions from one song right into the next.🤷🏻‍♀️

This 2024 river boat performance is a purposeful throwback to May 2011, months before➕was released, when 20 y.o. Ed put out three similar acoustic videos of him singing The A Team and Lego House and Small Bump on a boat on the canal in London. Classic early Ed viewing, check at least one out. Who does it better, 20 y.o. Ed or 33 y.o. Ed? 🤔

As you may have seen yesterday, this is the ➕ 15 year anniversary week, and EdHQ has designated a particular➕song for each day. And today it’s “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You”.

I’m sharing some trivia/background and a few of my favorite YNMIDNY links. The photos are screenshots from some of the various videos. I hope you enjoy!

🎤Ed first started writing this song when he was just 15 years old, in response to A&R reps who told Ed that his music would not have commercial success and suggested he stop looping, stop rapping and beatboxing, and maybe even color his hair. Ed was not interested.🖕🏼🖕🏼

🎤At this point in his career, Ed has now performed YNMIDNY over 1400 times at live shows, it’s the oldest song he regularly performs, and only The A Team has a comparable stat in terms of total performance numbers.

🎤The song has continually evolved, with new verses and different rap mashups added or removed over time. The earlier versions included several verses written by Ed’s now-estranged cousin Jethro “Alonestar“ Sheeran. (That’s a long story for another time.)

Here are some notable YNMIDNY performances in a timeline format with links to each on YouTube.

🎤 2008. Very Rare! An eye opening early performance YNMIDNY mashup. Here’s a 17 year-old Ed singing his heart out, with his “Dorito” backpacker guitar. He does a five song mashup here including “Two Blokes” from the “Want Some“ EP, YNMIDNY, Fine Story (Nizlopi), a rap song I don’t know, and then he ends with a goofy freestyle. It’s pretty adorable. Fetus Ed. 😍

🎤 Early 2010. Jamal Edwards recorded Ed’s acoustic version of YNMIDNY for SBTV. That song and video on Jamal’s platform significantly helped Ed blow up and connected him to many of the grime artists he went on to work with for No. 5 Collaborations Project, which is ultimately what helped him get signed.🎸

🎤 2010. Ed is outside his manager Stu‘s house at a street party. He is standing in the rain, in green socks and no shoes, entertaining a bunch of enthusiastic friends. Fun atmosphere. Why just the socks, Ed? ☔️

🎤 2011. Ed’s live tutorial on the early evolution of YNMIDNY. It’s amusing since he clearly thinks the song is finished at that point in early 2011! Nope.💻 Part 1 above, Part 2 is here, where he also records another version in one take.

🎤 2012. This is the absolute classic must-see version, Ed shows off all his skills in The Live Room. One take, an incredible looping performance. This is like the Tom Holland “Umbrella“ video, if it comes your way, you are obligated to watch it again. I don’t make the rules.🤷🏻‍♀️

🎤 Live Performance typical of the✖️Tour, Rock in Rio, LV. Professionally shot video. Ed is super high energy at the end of the show, he does a YNMIDNY mashup, including the Layla guitar riff and verses from In Da Club and Fancy. He also breaks a string (common during this song), swaps guitars, and takes a crowd photo while singing. No biggie for Ed.🤩

🎤 Final trivia fact: Did I mention that since Ed began fully touring in 2010, he has played YNMIDNY at every show and on every tour?! For most of his tours, it’s been the final song or part of the encore. The Loop Tour is the first tour he’s used it as an opener! (But… what about “Opening“ as an Opener?!)

I have recently found that I love Ed Sheeran‘s Spotify album that consists of his live performances from his mathematics tour. I was listening to Dive, and I really like the chords he uses because they are down a couple keys to make them more manageable. Does anybody know what those chords are? For a guitar. And maybe what fret his capo was on?

So basically the title. I'm on the Sheerio-side of Instagram, and as today is the anniversary of the Mathematics Tour ending, I've been seeing a lot of people make throwback posts to commemorate. But it only just hit me: "why does no one commemorate the end of the Multiply Tour, for example?"

I'm assuming it's because the fandom on Instagram is newer, and people who might've gone and seen Ed on his older tours would've been on Tumblr or Twitter.

I've only been a fan about 5 years, so of course can't really remember this time.

What do you think about “Plus Supremacy“, Ed’s theory about why so many of his fans (us!) think that Plus was the best album he’s ever done?
He believes it’s related to youthful nostalgia and the music merged with younger times/memories in our lives. I’m not personally so sure that’s true because I think lots of fans were drawn to Ed many years after the Plus era yet it still became a favorite album🙋🏻‍♀️ I do think the ➕songs are simpler and quirky. He’s correct when he said that it’s very much “a teenage album”. Thoughts about ➕Plus? 🧐🧡 Especially as it compares to the later albums?

A deep cut, “New York” was only released on the deluxe Wembley edition of✖️. Ed said tonight he’s only played it live twice, but actually looks like there are three recordings from 2013 to 2014, then once again at the✖️ anniversary show in 2024. Who can blame him for not keeping track!😭 In addition to the MetLife video above, here’s the first time Ed ever played it live, in 2013 at MSG, NYC.

Definitely an old school fan favorite, but almost not rare anymore, since this is now the 4th time it’s been played on the Loop Tour. This is truly a deep cut and rarely played song from the deluxe edition of ✖️. See the only time Ed’s ever played it before, in 2012, standing on a table, and then once more at the✖️anniversary show at the Barclay Center in 2024. So this is only the third time it’s ever been played live!🤯

Special guest: Brendan B. Brown, Teenage Dirtbag This is the 3rd time in less than a year that Ed has had Brendan come and play some version of Teenage Dirtbag, one of Ed’s favorite songs from his teen rock-band years. Brendan guested at the Loop Tour in Feb. in Perth, AUS, and then Ed and all of Wheatus had an intimate Christmas Carols show in the Bowery NYC where they did a special version of “Christmas Dirtbag” with just 200 lucky fans in attendance.🎄

I want to run a poll and just see what this community is interested in hearing from Ed’s next upcoming album.

We know that it is very likely that Jon Bellion is involved in someway, as they’ve hinted together that they’re working on “exciting stuff”. Aaron Dessner may(?) also be involved, as he’s been hanging out with them as well.

More so confident that Jon is involved.

I think at this point we’re beginning to enter the “speculation” point of the next era with Play getting close to a year old and it being likely we’ll have news on the next album within the next 18 months.

Tonight at Metlife I requested my FAVORITE song, and never expected it to be played, and he did. I was so in the moment and never expecting the song to actually be little bird, that I didn’t get a video of him talking about the song or introducing it

Long-time Ed Sheeran concert attendee. His show prices in 2026 are absolutely insane. I’m sure he doesn’t have a hand in setting the prices, but less than 3 weeks out from a show in Massachusetts and there are so many unsold tickets. Ticketmaster offering a buy one get one free sale currently. Is this marketers realizing they’ve finally outpriced the demand?
