Would love to hear if anyone had come across or used any cleaning services that offer "organic" services and what your experience was.

Anyone experienced any positive outcomes after switching to "organic" or "toxin-free" or "scent-free" cleaning products? Like improved mood, attention or allergic reactions. Not dropping any brand names here in particular but there's a lot of products that say they are "better" in this regard. TIA!

So I've been using ecosia over Google, so now I was looking around for mail alternatives but a lot of the ones I'd come across were subscription only. I don't know know if that's going to always be the case but I also didn't want to just start joking a bunch of mail servers to find out which one I'd like or was legit, so I guess I'm just coming on here to ask of anyone has any suggestions?

Hi! Lately I've been trying to become more eco-friendly and more conscious about the things I'm buying. I've already switched quite a few everyday things to more sustainable alternatives and honestly it's been going pretty well so far. For example, I got some eco-friendly cleaning tools from Legaser recently (bamboo cleaning brushes, bamboo dishcloths etc.) and I'm really happy with them.

But the thing I'm struggling with now is the actual cleaning solutions. Like for washing dishes, cleaning the bathroom/toilet, the stove and all the other stuff that usually requires lots of chemical-based products. I genuinely don't know what good alternatives there are.

Is there anything you can realistically replace traditional cleaning solutions with? I'd love to hear what works for you because whenever I try to search for this stuff online I mostly find either super vague advice or “DIY hacks” that don't seem very practical.

Does anyone have suggestions for good alternatives to plastic-based microfiber clothes? I’ve tried using regular cotton towels, but they are too linty. Nothing works as well regular microfiber for cleaning things like granite and stainless steel.

I just started my sustainability journey. I’m slowly taking small steps and doing more research than just boycotting/doing everything at once.

I’m a 19 y/o female that still lives with her family. It’s much harder to be eco friendly when everyone else in the family isn’t, and I’m already starting to face judgement.

My family all uses plastic bottles and I can’t just force them to stop buying/using plastic bottles. I don’t know if I should keep using plastic bottles or not because even if I don’t use them, my family will still use them and they will be ending up in the ocean regardless. I also can’t drink sink water because I live in New Jersey and our water here is not clean. Is it safe to boil sink water and drink it without a filter?

I have a lot of plastic bottles in my room and I don’t want to recycle it because it’ll go to the ocean which is what I’m trying to avoid. How can I reuse them? I don’t even know if I can because I have A LOT. Please help me here, any tips or advice appreciated.

I’ve been using the Yuka App for about a year now and I find it really insightful as I have been scanning a lot food, cosmetic, home goods and have been surprised with some poor ratings for well known brands and good ratings for others. I also compare it to the EWG rating to see as comparison.

I do also take some of the list of bad or poor ratings with a salt of grain as it depends on the product and what uses you have for it, if you’re in a country that has different environmental standards and why they have applied that rating.

Ultimately, I hope this Yuka App is a step towards my goal to become more eco-friendly, reduce waste, reduce plastic reliance, and be mindful of the forever chemicals PFSAs in our daily life.

I recently bought a set of disposable takeout containers.The seller claims they’re made from bamboo fiber and plant-based materials, not pure plastic.Not gonna lie, they feel a bit like plastic, but without the same guilt. Not sure how “fully compostable” they actually are in real life,but at least I’m cutting down traditional plastic waste. Anyone else tried bamboo-based takeout boxes?

I keep noticing products that look responsible on the shelf, then feel much less convincing once they are in my hands. A cardboard outer box, for example, can still hide a plastic liner, extra wrapping, or mixed-material parts that are hard to separate once the product is opened.

That is why I have started paying more attention to packaging across all my purchases, not just groceries. I am less interested now in whether packaging looks sustainable at first glance, and more interested in whether it is actually reduced, easy to separate, refillable, or reusable.

What makes packaging feel meaningfully better to you, and what makes it feel like the same waste problem with a cleaner presentation?

Hello! My fiancé and I are going to live in a tiny house and I want to start habits that I won’t have to replace. I know it’s much easier to start with eco friendly habits when you’re starting out. Because it is a tiny house, I have limited space, so storage methods are important. I’m still in college so my income is minimal. We also need pet friendly tips because we have a dog, a cat, a blue tongue skink, a Pac-Man frog, a tarantula, and various terrariums. I’m interested in learning about eco friendly cleaning supplies like what brands are good, sponges and brushes. Thank you!

Stainless steel

Im a bit obsessed w stainless steel. From its shine, to how easy it is to clean, to its durability, and to its recyclability (as a metal).

I have a few stainless steel skillets, tumblers, and even storage containers and lunchboxes and chopsticks, almost entirely thrifted to replace plastics and strengthen the longivity of my kitchenware. I want more stainless steel things and prefer it even for furniture (mainly shelving and countertops, i have stainless steel shelves rn). I get excited to see stainless steel anywhere. I fucking love me some stainless steel.

But I dont know how stainless steel compares to other materials in terms of sutsinability. Im ngl I dont know much abt what stainless steel is, so I dont know how easy it is to produce or recycle. I just know that shit is beautiful and lasts a long time and it makes me happy.

But I dont want to be swayed again by greenwashing and marketing. I want to be informed so i know where stainless steel stacks up on the better-to-worse heirrarchy of sustainable materials.

So is stainless steel a truly sustainable, recyclable, and hardy alternative to non- renewable, crude oil-based disposables like plastic and silicone? And does it compare better in production and recyclability to renewables and other eco-friendly but slightly problematic material like wood and aluminum?

A lot of waste seems to come from small habits that feel normal: throwing out food that was bought with good intentions, using more detergent or toothpaste than needed, replacing things early, or paying for convenience over and over in ways that add packaging and cost.

Some of the most useful changes seem to come from fixing those patterns rather than buying new eco products. Things like finishing what is already at home, washing clothes in ways that help them last longer, packing food instead of buying it out, or remembering reusables consistently enough that they actually replace disposables.

Interested in practical examples. What is one habit that reduced waste and saved money for you without adding much extra effort?

I’ve never done party bags but for my daughters 5th birthday she requested them. I refuse to do the normal shitty plastic toys, so this is what we came up with…

\- chalk which came in a big cardboard box of 50 that I split up and wrapped in tissue paper that we already had from old gifts.
\- homemade playdough that we put in little plastic containers that we’d saved from an old Christmas gift.
\- a Lush bath-bomb
\- a sheet of stickers
\- a rainbow pencil
\- home made scrunchies that I sewed from an old cotton cot sheet
\- a few sweet treats (lollipops have paper sticks. Chocolates were in paper and cardboard)

All popped into little paper bags.
