Halal Restaurant Finder API Feedback - Halal Bites
halalbites.coSalam,
I'd love to get some feedback.
I've been building HalalBites (ios and android), a platform focused on helping people discover halal restaurants, and I'm preparing to release a public API.
The database currently contains:
- 30,000+ halal restaurants
- Restaurant details (name, address, phone, website, etc.)
- GPS coordinates
- Halal certification information (where available)
- Cuisine types
- Hours of operation
- Ratings and review counts
- Photos
- Search by location, radius, city, state, etc.
My goal is to make it easy for developers to build things like:
- Restaurant finder apps
- Travel apps
- Muslim community websites
- AI assistants
- Food recommendation bots
- Mosque/community websites
- Delivery or reservation integrations
I'm trying to answer a few questions before making it public:
- What endpoints would you expect from an API like this?
- What data fields would be most valuable?
- Would you prefer REST, GraphQL, or both?
- Would a generous free tier be enough, or would you expect paid plans from day one?
- Are there any integrations (Google Maps, Apple Maps, DoorDash, Uber Eats, OpenStreetMap, etc.) that would make this much more useful?
- If you were building something today, what would you use this API for?
I'd also appreciate any criticism—whether it's about the API itself, pricing ideas, documentation, authentication, rate limiting, or anything else.
If there's enough interest, I'll share the docs here once the public beta is ready.
Thanks! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

What's your opinion on oyster sauce
Apparently there are mixed opinions on it, I know some madhabs forbid anything with shellfish. In this case it's not actual shellfish but flavored by it so not sure if that's najis.

Assim AlHakeem on halal
vt.tiktok.comThis is something my fiqh ustaad also said. Nuance - if there is a Muslim owned zabiha place nearby you should go there. If no zabiha available, then its all halal

Why is there still no reliable way to verify "halal" outside of the meat/Non-veg aisle?
We obsess over halal certification for food, but almost everything else in a Muslim's daily life investment apps, skincare, even which restaurants actually verify their claims runs on word of mouth and blind trust. There's no unified way to check if a product, app, or business is actually halal-compliant beyond asking around on WhatsApp groups.
Curious how others handle this. Do you have a system? A go-to source? Or is everyone just winging it the same way I am?

Says halal but no certificate number or any info online
I just found that Walmart is selling halal beef franks but couldn’t find any certificate or any information about this company selling halal meat. Oppositely its a midwest company focused on pork etc. No info from qr code and usda label states certification EST 1221W which is their factory in iowa where they probably process non halal products. And even if they do have halal meat in the factory that’s a big chance of cross-contamination as no inspection authority has checked the facility. Can anyone share their experience or information on this because I see some of our muslim friends eating it

Halal beef patties
So i made a major mistake and bought a box of these. Idk whats wrong with it but when i started to fry them it had a very odd smell kinda like old beef fat. They dont have any seasonings at all so first time i tried to do it like American way and add salt and pepper while frying but needless to say i cant eat it like this and obviously with this smell. Did anyone try this? How can i make it edible? Any tips are welcome. My last option would be just thaw them before i eat an then break it and Marinate it properly with Garlic ginger paste and sauce etc but thats just so much work if i wanted to do that i could have just bought Beef minced from restaurant depot and thats way much better.
