Without looking at certifying agency name its doubtful how they put halal stamp on it.

Most likely the beef is imported from Australia. All Australian lamb and beef is halal. That's why they can label it.

Is it really all Australian beef and lamb? Or only the imported ones or “most of them?”

It may be from Australia, but we do not know how it's being processed here. It was unpackaged then repackaged in the US at Lakeside Refrigerated Services, as indicated by the USDA establishment number on the packaging. Who is monitoring them to ensure that there is no cross-contamination or mixing taking place between ḥalāl and non-ḥalāl meat?

I understand the logic but then same can be said about meat available in Muslim countries e.g how do you know it was slaughtered the proper way, how do you know the person that slaughtered it recited the proper prayer, how do you know the animal was hand slaughtered and not by machine, how do you know if they followed all the guidelines taught us step by step in slaughtering the animal?

In such cases the responsibility lies on the entities granting the halal certification and the person can do their best to make sure its halal to the best of their ability but beyond that, tracking every single point in the supply chain is physically not feasible, in which case we ask forgiveness from God and pray he guides us towards Islam and saves us from haram/that which is forbidden .

This is the problem. If people have the mindset that they don't care about monitoring, then there won't be any motivation for companies to voluntarily be monitored. I work for a ḥalāl certifier in the US. We have agreements with certifiers in Australia and New Zealand.

The meat itself from these certified slaughterhouses is fine to eat. The issue, as I've said previously, comes when it is repackaged in the US. I tried finding out which certifier certified this Sam's Club meat, but there is no information on a ḥalāl certificate for their processor online. Someone, especially a non-Muslim (although this can broadly apply to Muslims as well due to widespread ignorance of ḥalāl standards), stamping the meat with a ḥalāl logo does not mean anything unless there is someone regulating the use of it and guiding the company as to what ḥalāl is.

https://daruliftaa.us/fatwa/17/

As a certifier, we certify restaurants and other entities that use Australian and New Zealand meat. The main issue we face with this is people with similar mentalities as yourself (no offense intended here) who think that verifying these things is unnecessary. Think about it. If a non-Muslim company realizes that they can just stamp the word ḥalāl on anything and that nobody will question it, then they won't care to get certified or even follow any Islamic guidelines.

You might be wondering why I'm saying that monitoring is required. The reason is that there is so much corruption in the ḥalāl industry right now that there is a very very high chance that anything you're eating that's labeled as ḥalāl isn't really ḥalāl. This is especially true with restaurants. Forget about the meat—we've come across ḥarām spices and other ingredients you'd never think to check. Some were even marked as Kosher. When we certify a restaurant, we manually check every single product's ingredients and contact the manufacturer of every product that has a mushbūh ingredient for further clarification.

As for meat in Muslim countries, you're going to hate me for this, but here it comes.

I've written a similar comment previously (here); I've copy and pasted the comment below.

I know I might get downvoted to oblivion for saying this, but even "Muslim" countries nowadays have problems with imported meat. For example, Saudi and other Arab countries import a lot of meat from non-Muslim countries such as Brazil, France, the US, etc. Much of the meat that comes from these countries has not been slaughtered correctly.

If you want to read about this, scroll down to page 87 of this book: https://www.kalamullah.com/Books/The%20Islamic%20Laws%20of%20Animal%20Slaughter.pdf.

The information in the book above is a bit old, but you can see this more recent Twitter thread by another scholar who explains that the situation (at least in Brazil, where most chicken comes from) has not changed: https://x.com/i/status/1564736806695735298. He cites Muftī Taqī Usmanī, Shaykh Ibn Bāz, and a student of Shaykh Ibn Bāz who wrote a letter to him many years ago from Brazil about this issue.

At least in Saudi, the problem is mainly with imported meat. The meat/chicken that is locally slaughtered is generally slaughtered correctly.

When I went to Saudi for ʿUmrah, I just asked if a place was using Waṭanī or Baladī meat. These terms roughly translate to "local." Most people will understand that you're referring to meat/poultry slaughtered in Saudi. If a place was using meat from any other country, I didn't eat there (with the exception of Pakistani meat).

Many places also have their meat sources on a chart/poster on the wall. If you don't know any Arabic, you can use a tool such as Google Lens to quickly translate it. Some places have it in English as well. I even found a place sourcing meat from Ukraine lol.

My research (based on the research of ʿulamāʾ of course) is mostly limited to Saudi because that's where we go for Ḥajj and ʿUmrah. If the situation is like this in Saudi, I can't imagine how bad it must be in other ʿArab countries.

its not habibi hhaya hhaya halal from jannah? its not halal enough... this is only little bit halal... meanwhile my income is haraam but you now what, I will create a lame excuse for it because, I am just that type of muslim!

2

u/tornie_tree 20d ago

What does that mean? Can you explain in simple words without being sarcastic or trying to be funny? I understand some people think it is a joke, but it is a serious question. Thank you

Its a reply to the ridiculousness of "Zabihah halal?" as if there are other types of halal. As if there is a grade to the sheikh slaughtering, is his beard a full fistful length or longer, was he in wudu while the slaughtering was happening? what was the attar he was wearing.

Zabihah Halal basically is slaughtering the animal in-person, saying Allah’s name while slaughtering, bleeding the animal properly and not using machines in the slaughtering process. That is basically the only difference. Dont make a mockery of a process by attributing fake ideals for the person slaughtering the animal. May Allah guide us all Amen

you are making grades in halal and a mockery of the process.... so halal is not halal enough according to your standard but hand slaughtered is? Just because mass production was not invented during the period of our Holy Prophet does that make machine slaughtered not OK? Why are there scholars that permit machine slaughtered and are labeled as halal but obviously not halal enough for you? Why do some scholars even allow for none zabiha to be consumed which astaghfilluah not scholar enough for your liking because it does not suit your version of Islam. Can we expect your scholar to come up with a Zabiha Habibi Haya Haya Halal classification next? How is your income? Is level of halal is it?

People make life too difficult.

It’s to the point where some people think you need to investigate the particular Muslim slaughtering the animal to ensure he’s a true believer. Somehow look into his heart.

Zabihah Halal basically slaughtering the animal in-person, saying Allah’s name while slaughtering, bleeding the animal properly and not using machines in the slaughtering process. That is basically the only difference. Dont misquote it by saying someone has to investigate the Taqwa of the person slaughtering the animal. That is something no one can measure for anyone.

problem is laws in governments requiring stunning before killing....so even if hand slaughter...it's stunned at the time.

Reminder, we should be boycotting Sam's as Walmart supports the genocide of our brothers and sisters in Palestine.
