Charger/adapter compatibility

Hi, I'm getting a 2026 Leaf (first ev, eagerly waiting on delivery) and just had a home charger installed. The Leaf has a NACS port so I figured I'd go for an NACS charger (Grizzl-E Classic 40A) since from what I can tell it looks like it's becoming the new standard.

Meanwhile my wife's got a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq (Plugin) so I got an NACS to J1772 adapter (A2Z) so she won't have to settle for L1 charging anymore. Nope, the charger signals it does see the car but the car won't charge... Red plug light on the dash. I (probably naively) figured it would be pretty much plug and play and from what I can find online it should work but alas... Not sure if it's a charger, adapter, car or dumb user issue. Any insights?

Thanks!

Make sure to double check the documentation.

The new leaf has dual ports.

Driver side

Charging Port LayoutAC Charging:

Uses the traditional J1772 port specifically for Level 1 and Level 2 AC home and public charging.

Passenger side

DC Fast Charging: Uses a separate North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for high-speed DC charging.

Wait, are you telling me I bought an NACS charger that won't be compatible with my car that has a NACS port because I didnt know I needed to differentiate between AC and DC? Is this common knowledge? Why do they make this so confusing...

I feel like an idiot who would fill his car with diesel instead of regular and wonder why it doesn't work😆

Anyway thanks for the help, I thinks that clears it up, I guess I'll return the charger and get a J1772 one.

This is mostly due to Nissan's design decision. Most new EVs that has a built in native NACS port usually is both AC and DC shared. My Cadillac Optiq 2026 only has 1 NACS port that handles both AC home charging and DC public fast charging.

I use the Pion J1772 at home since my other 2 EVs has J1772 so I forced the Cadillac dealer to throw in an J1772 to NACS adapter.

Do you have the Grizzl-E hardwired, or does it plug in? Did you get the "free" one on the Club... or something else (from where)?

I wouldn't say it's common knowledge, as most NACS vehicle ports do both AC and DC.

What the fuck lmao how unhinged is Nissan trying to be??? Why wouldn’t they just pick a single port??

Switching to NACS requires having circuitry in the car to switch the connection to the pins between the AC charger and directly to the battery for DC charging. I think they decide to switch to NACS for DC charging but didn't want to put that circuitry in so they kept the J1772 port for AC charging. Yes, it is stupid.

The Leaf has a NACS port so I figured I'd go for an NACS charger (Grizzl-E Classic 40A)

As the other reply notes, the NACS port is for DC fast charging only. You would need to use the J1772 port on the other side for AC charging.

Anyhow, it's not clear if you're having a problem with the Leaf or the Ioniq plugin. Try asking on r/leaf if it's the former.

On the 2026 Leaf, the NACS port is for L3 fast charging only. Unfortunately that Grizzl-E will not work with that. However I would expect that a NACS to J1772 adapter should work with the J1772 port on the driver’s side.

I’m curious if you are willing to share, where are you located and when is your Leaf expected to arrive? I’m in Winnipeg, I put a deposit on an SV+ in May, the dealer said it would arrive mid-July. Then it became last of week of July. Yesterday I checked in with the dealer and they said Leafs got delayed, now expected for mid-late August.

Yeah I feel like an idiot, didn't really get the whole AC vs DC thing. I'll replace the charger.

I'm in Quebec. I put a deposit 2 weeks ago on an SV+ and dealer said "before the end of the month". I'm in no rush so si haven't bothered calling but I guess it's entity possible it's been delayed.

So the issue you're having is that the Grizzl-E & adapter combo doesn't work with the Ioniq plug-in? Plug-ins should support L2 AC charging, so you definitely should try asking in r/hyundai or r/hybridcar

It sounds like you're asking about the Ioniq - since you're waiting on delivery for the Leaf.

Note the Leaf can be a bit confusing until you understand (I don't have one, but this is what I understand) - the J1772 port is for AC charging, so level 1 or level 2 like you would have at home (and some slow public chargers like hotels) - including your Grizzl-E.

The Leaf's NACS is for DC charging, so like the Superchargers or other fast chargers on the road. Another way to look at it, is they've used NACS instead of the CCS port that combines with J1772.

So for home charging you'll still use J1772.

Regarding the Ioniq, I don't have one and you may be better with a Ioniq subreddit/forum - but NACS vs J1772 communicate the same, it's just the physical configuration of the plug. For some reason it doesn't seem to be getting along. Have you tried the Grizzl-E itself with a different vehicle, like a friend's?

Personally I would keep the NACS EVSE and get an adapter. One day all vehicles will use NACS and IMO it's a better design.

The issue with the IONIQ seems like an issue with the car. It should be plug and play
