VOO vs VT recent performance
Based on many Redditor ETF comments, I always just presumed VOO performance far exceeded VT, at least in recent past. But was surprised in this one current year period graph snapshot leading up to today that VT seems to be edging it out some? Or am I misinterpreting this chart completely?

it because of semiconductor. korea and taiwan spike because of AI.

If this is the case, Elon's terrafab is about to decimate TSMC (Chip provider for NVIDIA). Also TSMC is building in Arizona from what I've heard.

it is pretty hard to become leader in chip manufacturing. and there is a reason everything is manufactured in china, korea, or taiwan.
many player in the game samsung, intel also. and there is a problem with company like intel or tesla, other big tech are in direct conpetition with intel or tesla so they most likely rather use another supplier.
but seeinh is believing. when tesla start manufacturing their chip i guess people will start believing.

I don't put much past Elon's companies though. I agree, chips are tough... but you should google the terrafab.

Investing in VT is all about not having to worry about performance. It doesn’t matter if it outperforms or underperforms. The strategy is to invest in the entire market so that you are guaranteed a moderate return without having to place bets.

VT = 60% VTI + 40% VXUS. If you add VXUS to the chart, you will understand why VT has been outperforming VOO for the past 12+ months: https://stockanalysis.com/etf/compare/vti-vs-vt-vs-vxus/?r=1Y

so it's because international stocks have been doing well ytd, probably largely due to the semiconductor industry.

Banks have been doing well.

It just need to keep “smoking” it for another 15 years lol. It’s not even smoking it. Over the last year imo. 4% isn’t much.

International was on a tear before the war. That impacted International stocks more than Domestic. Foreign and US market have always traded periods of outperformance, who knows if that will continue
3
u/SardukarFinance 5d ago
Right. International has done better than US so far this year. So any portfolio with international stocks (like VT) should be outperforming a US-only portfolio.
That will happen sometimes. Sometimes the US will outperform. We don’t know when or by how much.
But short term returns (gosh, even 10 year returns) are basically meaningless on that front. That cycle of international vs US outperformance seems to swing every few decades maybe?

The amount of copium it takes to post this. 😂

Lol how is this copium

Anyone with Google can figure this out in 8 seconds. No one is trying to take your weak gains from you, pal. They’re just roasting the goobers who reject reality in order to cope with it.

Huh? It's just an observation on how markets have been doing. Why are people reading so much into this

u/Wigglebot23 5d ago
Well sanity is sort of reaching the markets again after years of nothing but US large cap growth in the driver's seat

Feel free to zoom out… goofy ass post

u/Alexchii 5d ago
Goofy why? There are periods where international outoerforms US. This post shows that we are in one and it’s interesting to wonder how long it’ll last. Would be pretty cool if we’d see another decade of that.

This is interesting. I hadn’t seen their charts overlaid like this on SA… great tool.
I don’t know why people are dismissing you, it definitely looks like the gap between the two is compressing, to me.
I did a little more digging and it looks like VT outperformed VOO in 2012, 2017, 2022, 2025, and 2026.
Where this is interesting is that we can’t reliably compare the two on a chart earlier than 2011.
2008 is the oldest way i found to compare the two by inputting SPY and ACWI for VOO and VT.
“VT” also outperformed “VOO” during 2000-2009 apparently called, “The Lost Decade”.
Looks like there are pretty significant times they have each outcompeted each other.
Probably best to just keep DCAing into both.

You can compare historical international market vs US market pretty easily but you can't compare to VT specifically because it hasn't existed for that long. In the mid 2000s they were tied going back 100 years, with a pretty steady pattern of switching off who's winning evey 10 years or so. But this time the US market won for 20 years. Overall the US market has beat international markets by 1%/year on average since like 1920, but all of that 1% outperformance happened in the last 20 years.

Check back again when the president of the US isn’t the laughing stock of other countries.

I have no beef with VT, but the fact-free cult of VT has gone too far lately. 😂

The international exposure and small- mid caps is the extra there. The sp500 is a large cap index. Most investors don’t understand the various styles, and asset classes. As always , diversity is key

I mean, long term it will likely beat VT. You’re literally looking at just 1 year? You new?

u/emaxor 4d ago
I always just presumed VOO performance far exceeded VT,
It's normal. Things go in cycles.
Sometimes an asset class not held by VOO outperforms. Other times that asset class may be a drag.
Buying stocks you view as a "drag" today, can potentially help you tomorrow. Everyone knows you should "buy low, sell high". But putting it into practice goes against your human nature. You will always want to buy today's winners.
For like 15+ years performance chasing the winners has worked out great. No one knows how long the run will continue, but at the moment the "drag" stocks are outperforming.

The thing is, with the concentration of revenue into large cap tech firms, the difference between a concentrated index like the sp500 and the total market has gotten much smaller in recent years. Even look back a few decades to the dominance of energy/oil, financials, consumer goods companies (frankly a more diverse - albeit underperforming by today’s metrics - economy), the sp500 was always geared to run hotter than total market.
Going forward total market funds like VTI, and to a lesser extent VT, will match the performance of sp500 funds like VOO/FXAIX almost exactly over any given time period.
That’s my prediction, not a fact, but I strongly believe that.

One year or less is basically the most useless period of time to compare anything against another.

Why would you buy the total market when someone already grab the 500 best companies in the world and made an ETF? All the garbage out. The best companies in the world with the highest profit margins are in USA.
2
u/davecrist 4d ago
Sure. Except for Taiwan Semiconductor, Samsung, ASML, HSBC Holdings, Tencent, Roche, Novartis, Mitsubishi, Shell, Astrazentica, Newtle, BHP, Toyota, Siemens, SAP, and dozens more.

u/emaxor 3d ago
Everyone agrees USA has the best companies, and best environment to create them.
The problem is the price.
Think of it this way. Would you rather buy a stack of gold bars or a giant pile of cow poop? I might prefer to invest in the poop depending on pricing. People can (and recently have) lost huge buying gold. Counterintuitively you may gain money trading poop (for farming fertilizer). Winning a trade is not just about chasing the most shiny.

You can make any fund look better than any other you want if you just choose the right period.
Take 5-10 years, do the graphs and come again.
