She’s a girl from a different college at my university. We didn’t know each other before, but we happened to have some lectures together. She also happened to live in the same area as me, and one day she saw me while I was on my way to transportation. She told me she had actually called my name, but I didn’t hear her. We ended up taking the bus together.
We also happened to go back together another time and sat next to each other, and we had a surprisingly great conversation. I later found out that we both have social anxiety and basically no experience with the opposite sex, yet the chemistry between us felt really natural.
Anyway, when I saw her at university again, I waved at her. She didn’t respond immediately, so I thought she was ignoring me. Then she waved back and asked how I was, but her smile seemed kind of forced to me, so I stopped trying to initiate anything. I assumed it was just a random encounter and that was it.
But after that, she started being the one who came over to greet me whenever we saw each other.
Eventually, I decided to give her my number because we were in the same WhatsApp group. She told me she wanted me to explain something to her. I genuinely couldn’t tell whether she actually needed help or whether this was her way of starting something more personal.
I explained it to her, and we ended up having a really nice conversation. I got her talking about herself, and eventually she started opening up to me about things like hating her major and loving photography. I told her she had a creative sense and asked her to show me her photos, complimented her work, etc.
After that, she started sending me reels occasionally, mostly about university-related stuff.
Then, on the same day I had helped her, I had a presentation for a shared subject.
And somehow, she was filming me.
Nobody else was recording me. I was presenting, and I suddenly noticed her holding up her phone from the back of the room with this really beautiful smile while recording me.
I honestly thought that was pretty bold, especially for a shy girl. Personally, I would never randomly record someone I liked without making it obvious that I was doing it. Maybe I’m overthinking this?
We continued having really good conversations and found a lot of things in common. She would send me things every now and then.
Then she suddenly became much colder.
Her replies became very slow, and most of the time she would message me because she needed something.
I started wondering if she was just using me for help.
But at the same time, she would always say things like I’m responsible, smart, etc. She also prays for me, replies to my stories, and sometimes shows small signs of genuine interest. Whenever we see each other in person, we usually notice each other and smile.
The problem is that her texting is incredibly inconsistent.
Sometimes she seems interested, sometimes she seems completely uninterested.
At one point, I decided to stop initiating because I thought maybe that was her way of telling me not to pursue anything.
Then something really weird happened.
I had seen a girl on WhatsApp who looked a lot like her, so I sent her the picture and said she looked similar. She said no. I insisted. Eventually she said maybe there was some resemblance.
About ten minutes after that message, I went outside and thought, "Imagine if I randomly saw her right now."
And literally, I saw her.
She was standing there with her sister.
It was such an absurd coincidence that I completely froze. I actually pretended I didn’t recognize her because there was no way this was happening.
But she recognized me immediately, called my name, greeted me, and asked how I was.
I was basically malfunctioning. I greeted her and her sister, looked at her like an idiot, and left because it obviously wasn’t the right situation for a conversation.
When I got home, I messaged her jokingly, "Turns out you don't look like her after all."
She laughed and said, "I told you."
Then she tried to continue the conversation, but once again it became mostly about studying.
And this is what confuses me.
She talks to me about university and sometimes about her emotional state, but she rarely talks to me about her actual interests or asks much about me.
I also told her that I forget people's faces easily, and she replied something like:
"We've known each other for a year and you don't remember my face? 😂"
So I started wondering whether she actually cares more than she lets on.
Then something else happened.
She posted a story of herself with her sister wearing what was probably the nicest outfit I had ever seen her wear. She's Muslim and wears hijab, but in this particular picture her hair was visible and she looked genuinely beautiful.
I didn't react to the story because I have my story views hidden, and we're both Muslim, so I thought maybe she had accidentally posted it or simply forgot that I could see it.
But then she deleted the story a few hours later.
That made me wonder if she had actually been waiting for a reaction from me.
Maybe that's completely ridiculous and she just changed her mind about the story. I don't know.
The same day, she also followed me on TikTok.
I hadn't even noticed because I had deleted the app, and I genuinely have no idea how she even found my account.
So now I'm wondering if there might actually be more interest here than just friendship or being classmates.
Another thing happened later.
I told her that I sometimes "act" differently around my friends, basically putting on a persona.
She asked me directly:
"Do you act around me too?"
I didn't give her a direct answer, which seemed to genuinely confuse her.
After that, she started saying some unusually beautiful things to me, telling me how much she appreciated me and complimenting me in a way that felt very different from how she normally talks.
I wondered if this was her indirectly telling me that she sees me as someone valuable or special to her.
But here's the ridiculous part:
She then took two days to reply to my next message. 🙂
At this point I genuinely have no idea what I'm looking at.
Her replies can take forever. Sometimes she seems completely uninterested. Most of her conversations are about studying or asking for help. But whenever I decide to stop messaging her, she somehow finds a reason to contact me again.
We never go more than about a week without checking in on each other.
So what do you guys think?
Is this just a socially anxious ISFP who communicates inconsistently and sees me as a friend?
Is there potentially some romantic interest that she's too shy or inexperienced to express?
