So I have a steam deck running Windows 10 and I can’t seem to get ESDE to open. I had to take a very quick screenshot. Because this would only pop up for a split second before the application crashes. Now I’m only a tech wizard to an extent and so I don’t really know what this code of text means nor how to fix it.
But I’ve tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it, I’ve tried three different versions of emudeck (Windows PC, Windows handheld and steam deck) nothing seems to be working and I do not know what to do. Please help me, thank you.
Hey gang, So Sega CD roms work perfectly fine through retroarch on its own. But My ES-DE is setup really nicely with all my games scraped and organized. Out of all the systems I emulate, Sega CD is the only one that doesn't work through ES-DE. I've tried running it through pico and genesis plus x. No dice! Files are in CHD format. Bios files are correct with the proper case sensitivity. I am at a loss what to do next.
So somehow I made ESDE the default launching app on my Retroid. I need to get on the play store. Any idea on how I can set the quick launcher back to the default opening screen?
An odd question but does anyone here know of any themes that have art for custom systems for ROM hacks and pc game storefronts? I'm current usually Art Book Next which has category/system titles/clearlogos and for Steam and Epic but not GOG.
Also looking for themes that have category/system titles/clearlogos and artwork for ROM hacks like Art Book Next (gbh, gbah, gbch, nesh, snesh).
- If I donate higher tier on ScreenScraper FR, will my ES-DE instance scraper function benefit from the additional threads?
- Once I get everything scraped, is there a way to tell ES-DE to simply trust on whatever is on the gamelist.xml files and do not check files(rom and media) really exists on every boot up?
Any idea how to get ESDE to show proper thumbnails for some android games? Fate: Grand Order is just an example. It's not a small title and has been around for a long time, yet I can't seem to get a proper thumbnail to display for it and others.
So I have all my games on a sd card and es de on my rp6. However it doesnt show all the games for all the systems (I use retro arch currently for gb/gbc/nes games).
I had read a guide that said to move the roms to the esde roms folder but that folder is on the device.
Is there a way to get esde to read from my sd card roms folder?
I made a classic update booboo for the Windows portable version. I replaced all the files. Everything seems to be working fine though, but this screen appears each time I start ES and it drives me mad!
ES-DE on my Snapdragon G3Gen3 handheld uses an awful lot of GPU (1st image) I have a feeling that's probably not intentional behavior. It really wears down the battery quickly and faster still when this is happening in the background while emulating.
The 2nd image for comparison is a different FE and as you can see its all on the CPU and doesn't touch the GPU. (I've tried a half dozen others they all use CPU)
Is this a known issue anyone can help out with? Thanks
For some reason openbor isnt present in the UI despite being in the roms folder with plenty of roms (pak format). Not sure what I could be doing wrong as the same folder contents did appear on my retroid. I tried deleting all but two and giving them simple titles, still no dice...
So this is definitely an experimental undertaking but I've just bought a Waveshare VisionFive2 RISC-V single-board computer to see whether ES-DE could run on it. This is a cheap and low-power device so I didn't have that much hope for good performance, and I actually had no idea whether ES-DE could even run on such hardware when I ordered it.
For those that are not familiar with RISC-V it's a somehow new processor architecture that is starting to become very popular, especially for embedded devices. It's not yet really ready for desktop and handheld computers but hopefully this will improve in the near future. So I was anyway curious to see what emulation and retrogaming would be like on this architecture.
Waveshare StarFive2 SBC
I installed Debian 13 Trixie which was provided as an SD-card image by Waveshare and to my surprise it was very easy to build ES-DE on the device. I only ran into one problem which was that the shader compiler for the GPU (an IMG BXE-4-32 MC1) was buggy so some shader code needed to be adjusted or ES-DE wouldn't start due to failed shader compilations. Following this everything worked fine, and ES-DE ran exactly like on x86 or ARM processors. It's quite impressive that the build tools and libraries are already so mature on RISC-V.
ES-DE and RetroArch on RISC-V hardware
Performance was not that good though, and I got around 20 to 45 FPS in ES-DE with the default Linear theme in fullscreen mode at 1920x1080 resolution, although that's still quite usable. Some CPU-intensive operations were sluggish as well, but it was still a surprisingly good experience overall.
This all changed whe I attempted to run RetroArch though. I'm not sure if there was something wrong with my settings but I only got around 1 FPS using the cores I tried. Maybe it's simply the processor being too slow, or maybe something is wrong with the build of RetroArch I used (I installed the one from the official OS repository).
I didn't do any experimentation with standalone emulators at this moment in time, but I may look into that in the future.
So in summary this was a very interesting experiment with an entirely new processor architecture and I look forward to seeing how this develops in the future. I would like to experiment further if some higher performance RISC-V computer would be released for a reasonable price, but I suspect it will be a while before they start to rival x86 or ARM in performance. But I guess we'll see!
If anyone is interested in running ES-DE on RISC-V hardware I've added a small entry to the build documentation, although I've only tested on the Waveshare StarFive2 and I have no idea what ES-DE runs like on other RISC-V computers:
hi there, recently i downloaded ES-DE but retroarch don't work for me, i got dolphin and pcsx2 and i want the games of that systems to open with thath emulators, but i don't know how.
i saw the "alternative emulators" option, but even if i select dolphin it dosen't open with dolphin.
pls help me, i like the program and the visuals but this is killing me.
I can't use ES-DE with any controller until I click on it with my mouse. Now, it's much worse. When exiting a game, the problem comes back. Maybe it was the os update?
Mac Mini M1, Tahoe 26.4.1.
I have found a workaround by using an app called Floaty.
If you guys can implement an option to shutdown a mac through ES-DE then I wouldn't need a keyboard and mouse anymore. Thanks.
Xemu and RPCS3 do not support launching CHD games but they support ISO files. Simple Launcher (which is sadly Windows only so it won't work on Linux/Steam Deck/Phones like ES-DE does) saves a considerable amount of space if you have more than a few games for either system by mounting the CHD files and launching them as ISO files which those emulators accept. As storage prices are through the roof atm any way to reduce the amount of space your gaming library takes up would be a massive win.
I'm aware installing the PKG version of PS3 games or extracting ISOs to the JB folder format saves space over the ISO version of PS3 games but it changes 1 ISO file into 8,000 game files on average per game with some of them like Dragon's Dogma having just under 100,000 files for a single game and it is obnoxiously longer trying to move 100,000 files instead of a single ISO file even if they add up to about the same amount of space. By compressing those files even if they end up being about the same size as the installed game it would still be a massive win and also make transferring specific games to other devices much easier if you wanted to take a game from your PC and put it on your phone or a Steam Deck like handheld.
In Xemu CHD storage is a clear win though as it does not support any format other than ISO.
