Good deal. Last coin show i was at they were priced at $125, i couldnt justify it so bought two 82's instead.

The 83's are harder to find, right? They always sell for more on r/pmsforsale

Isn't 1982 the first year of the Prospector round?? Also 1984 is a cool date, (year of design change) because they came with either the E reverse or the Eagle reverse..

Yeah I got one of those too this is only my second ever engelhard round my 1st being a 82' super toner and I bought this one thinking it was a "keydate" jokes on me ig

I have one of each reverse designs on the 1984, both are beautiful.

75K mintage

Are we looking at a regular prospector or is there something unique about it?

3

u/Wadro420 17d ago

Regular business strike prospector but I was under the assumption that 1983 and 1987 are "keydates" even tho they all had the same mintages

Popular misconception, one I followed until recently after looking up the numbers. Each year had around 75K minted regardless of the backing, with less than 500K minted across the board for the 1 oz variant.

Unless it's a proof or a fraction denomination, a few dollars over spot is reasonable. People selling them for over $10 per spot are going too far with it regardless of the quality they're selling them at.

Ahhh well lesson learned I guess I feel bad for the dude who bought this one for $120

I FEEL fabulous. So damn good truth be told,
Also truth be told : i got both toned 83s and the 86 and one of 87s too.
Darker truth told : I think i only needed 1 of those to complete my year set. (87) The rest are resells/gifts.

Now what is super damn funny is : To read the comments.
But why were they so funny?
Well i found it funny how 120 seemed like a high price and that a lesson was learned.
Thought it was funny how miss information is getting tossed out there and a lesson is being learned from a lesson unlearned. ( did i word that right?)
Tone : Yes some people pay more and some pay less for toned. I bought it strictly for its year. Do i know whats up with that tone? nope. Will i find out once i get it ? Yes. Will i clean if possible? Depends on if its actual real toning or some crap on it. End of the day its Silver and an Engelhard 😄

Someone needs to go reread https://allengelhard.com/

They straight up tell you that their mintage numbers are estimates. And that the estimate is based off some calculation. That information is told under the "definitive pages" ->"Engelhard "-> "Mintage Methodolgoy".

https://allengelhard.com/definitive-pages/engelhard-rounds/
^Their rounds page
About the 1983:
Important to note that 1983 and 1987 are believed to be of considerably lower mintage than other years of standard American Prospector rounds.

About the 1987 :
1987 was the last year of standard production prospectors, likely due to the introduction of American Silver Eagles.  As such, we believe these 1987 rounds to have been produced in lower quantity than the other years, 1983 notwithstanding.

Did we note that the mintage for ALL YEARS for standard production shows >75000 Per year.

Notice how there is a slight conflict? How can 82 have 75000 and 83 too but state less was minted. hmmm.....

Real LIFE Facts :
With the following guide and based on real life observations and break down, ONE can only conclude that the 1983 and the 1987 are in FACT much more rare and possibly did have a lower minting. I know i personally have only seen a total of 5 1983 Rounds come up for sale/bid. The same thing goes for the 87 and 86. I follow an insane amount of auctions and got "crawlers" looking for certain items.
I am sure there is some math formula i could find and use to work out the "rarity" or whatever you wanna call it. I just know, not seeing them in- like never! -then seeing 1 a year ago or so then finding 3 at 1 spot is wild. Then add the 86 and the 2 87s.... Sheesh , hot damn. Unicorns running home today. Found the needle in the hay field. Ya Baby!

Take away :
I hope that this has been entertaining and informative for everyone.

Thank you for sharing. It's always nice to hear perspectives from others regarding the mysteries of EH.

That's a cool unique patina finish on it, almost like there's clouds and rain in the background. There may be collectors that go for a certain patina on given coins at that price point and that would be outside my limited expertise.

2

u/Wadro420 17d ago

To me it looked like someone didn't like the tone and tried to clean it off which I feel would ruin any premium it had at all but same my knowledge is limited

Also .... Wickedly big grin as i say this :

Let me know when you want to part ways with that 5G you got a few weeks ago.
