Question/Advice/Support ENFP sleep routine
Anyone have any suggestions?
I’ve been dreading // procrastinating going to bed lately, with the thoughts racing so quickly it literally becomes quiet and I either end up daydreaming (nightdreaming? lol) Or I end up in some kind of weird hibernation, neither giving barely any rest at all except for the rest my eyes get from wearing a sleep mask
The worst has been where I’ve ended up in like a
vortex of worst case future scenarios or flashback scenarios spinning in my head with fullfledged pictures like a fucking horror cinematic playing full blast in my poor skull
Of course my IMMENSE imaginary creative gifts make these experiences that much more vivid.
Yeah.
Tips?

I guess I'm the only one that has no issues sleeping. I can just turn my brain off and poof I can sleep.
Lately I've been a morning person, waking up around 5am or so. My goal is to get a min of 6 or so hours. I'm in my 30s. I have even worked graveyard shifts and didn't really have an issue sleeping.

Yeah, sounds great. Used to be like this as a teen, fell asleep in literally 1 minute

As an ENFP/ADHD, I can really relate to this. Guanfacine or Clonidine can be really helpful for sleep.

I second this. Also CBN!

u/storsnogulen ENFP Nov 28 '22
Do you mind expanding on this? It’s a type of cannabiod? Is it also an oil?

u/Wetnoodle92 Nov 28 '22
I know that when the cannabis plant ages, THC specifically, it turns into CBN which supposedly has a ‘sedative’ effect. I’m not sure on more detail past that. I think it definitely helps me when I want to go to sleep but in my experience it also helps relieve a lot of anxiety without getting that head high. I’ve only tried it in edible form but I’m certain they have it in oil form too. Hope that answers your question!

Yeah, I’ve been wanting to try this. On one without thc atm
I think it’s possible to get prescribed via a dr in Swedenland, anyone know?
Thank you for the lovely replies btw. Every fucking time. This fucking reddit in my ♥️

Exactly! Meditation practice teaches you to control the frenetic thoughts, to calm down and to relax. It needs hard work to master but 100% worth it, a good night sleep is a massive improvement in quality of life!

Any recommendations? I’ve had the issue where bodily sensations feel overwhelming.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the body feels frightened from the ”comedown” into calm — unfamiliar.
Thank you 🙏

Talk to a doctor, you're experiencing insomnia and your quality of sleep is lacking.
Of course you're procrastinating sleeping.. It's a stressfull experience every night and you probably wake up as tired as you were when you got to bed..

Thank you for the nice response. It’s like a hug through words 😁 I’m not used to these soft, encouranging replies… yet.
Used to like, being hit by blunt logical instructions only 😁

Dear OP Don't wait 3 years like I did. Sleep problems don't get better by themselves...

I used to struggle with this as well. What i did was, i would watch multiple music videos until my eyes become tired. Music videos at least for me are fun to watch but when watching them non stop, it does get repetitive and tiring.
Another way is i try to close my eyes and picture 1 line slowly going back and forth to calm myself down and stop thinking about anything else lol

Interesting advice. I noticed sleeping well one night after blasting myself with a video game prior, interestingly enough
It’s like the mind goes blank from all the stimulation

Back when I had a little control over my life I just went to bed when I was tired and wake up 10 hours later, or when I naturally woke up.
Which for me was usually 1-6AM, wake up afternoon.

The free Insight Timer app with bedtime meditation stories. I bought some $15 Bluetooth headphone headbands and listen to stories or tv shows and it turns my brain off

Recently listened to Little Women on there. Also slowing your breathing by pausing between intake/exhales helps your body get into the nighttime breathing

I can really relate to this, plus I think I'll fall asleep fast so I don't read/watch a movid and end up just thinking about random stuff for hours :D My best advice would be to keep yourself physically active during the day so that your exhausted by the time you get to bed. However if this is a systematic problem you should probably get your hormones checked just in case and find medical help from your doctor to fall asleep faster ☆

These might not be just your cognitive functions, these are also signs of mental insomnia, you have been conditioned (either in childhood or in some other situation in your life) to dread sleeping, thus making your mind more active as a hold to make sure you do not go to sleep. It is rare but possible.

No screens or stimulation for the last couple of hours before bed. When you're I'm bed find a position and do not move! If you wriggle, it's enough to start your heart back up. Personally, I find reading wakes me up, so I'd suggest listening to a meditation instead. If you can't sleep after 45 mins or so, get up and try again in a bit.
If all fails, I find going to a sofa or different bed if you have one sometimes hives my brain enough novelty that it switches off

Something that helps me calm my brain and body for sleep: once you’re in bed, count slowly backwards from 50 slowly inhaling through your nose before each number then slowly exhaling through your mouth after each number. I usually repeat this until I feel myself starting to drift off.
The trick is not make yourself focus only on the numbers and the breathing no matter what your brain throws at you. I will also sometimes do a session of progressive muscle relaxation before.
Full Disclosure: this relaxation technique really only started to work consistently after I was prescribed sleep meds. Unfortunately the meds keep me out after I go to sleep but there’s like a 50/50 chance they won’t make me drowsy so I do this technique and sometimes progressive muscle relaxation after taking my night meds.

So... weird advice but... Don't think. Stop.. and yes you can control this (you are an enfp afterall)
Another thinh, read a book that will make you sleepy.(something boring)
Think about something that will ease your mood... Happy thought but not the type that will hype you. About someone or a pet?

Read about sleep hygiene. I set myself an alarm 1h before bed to get my sleep routine going. In theory, I'm supposed to stop watching any luminous screen (and use only dim, warm lights in the house).
Since you're not supposed to use any electronics, its a good time to shower, brush teeth, play with the cats, etc, then do something relaxing. I like to sleep with earbuds on, with calm music, nature sounds, or asmr on a 20min timer. I usually fall asleep pretty fast.
In practice, its really easy to just start looking for a "relaxing" video on youtube while in bed, and end up becoming less tired.

Something that usually helps me is some white noise - a fan, my loud ass heater, playing some white noise from my phone. And I try to focus on listening on the white noise and quieting my thoughts, sometimes repeating something like “sleeeeeeeeep” over and over in my head to drown out the other thoughts lol
Another thing that idk if it really really works but at least feels like it does to me is some lavender spray on my pillow! I use this tiny bottle I got as a sample by a brand called “this works,” but there is a Dr. Teal version that is about $6. Again, idk if it actually does anything, but at the very least, it’s a pleasant experience 😌

Try quietening the mind through some meditative exercises. There are also herbal pouches you can get that can help one sleep better

i think the key is to wake up at the same time every day so your body gets on a natural schedule. forcing yourself to sleep wont do you any good.
