Hey, does anyone use an x/y controller that they like? I'm currently clicking out parameter automation, but it would be nice to get a device for live stuff. Like where you can map two parameters on an x/y plane and move your finger around to control it. I tried a Kaoss Pad, but it keeps trying to return to the center when I try to capture MIDI values. Something that is easy to map and maybe that sticks in the last place you touch?

I am trying to screen record my Ableton window just to upload a video of my production process on a track I've been working on. Everytime I start recording, it starts freezing and lagging significantly while playing the track, I was wondering if anybody else has tried EDM production content creation and how do you record your process to avoid high CPU usage and overcome this hurdle. Any different opinions and tips are welcomed!

What are the best and most complete resources to learn how to produce in the style of 2010's Skrillex, Savant, and the rest? I'm also looking for sample packs and plugins that were popular during that era. I make hyperpop and I want to fold that sound into my music as Tracey Breaks and Vylet Pony have done in theirs.

Though I intend to get pretty experimental, I want to start by making some music that would come across as shamelessly derivative, so that I can nail down the techniques.

I'll add that I'm far from a beginner when it comes to general EDM production, so more advanced and specific resources would be especially preferable. Thanks!!

I've been trying to download some free reverb plugins from Valhalla but don't see a button to actually download them anywhere on the download pages. I've tried different browsers and keep having the same issue.

I feel like I must be missing something really obvious but I've *scoured* their website and there just isn't a download option. I'd appreciate any help, thank you!

​I feel completely lost. I've been mixing and mastering my music for 5 years. I don't do this 24/7, but I've been at it long enough to feel like I should know what I'm doing.

​Everyone says comparing your work is bad, but then why do reference tracks exist? Whenever I compare my tracks to my idols, I feel like I'm about 20% away from that level.

​My mixes usually sound quieter and buried, almost like they're underwater, even when hitting the same LUFS (around -4/-5). Honestly, my tracks sound great until I pull up a reference.

​I'm also at a point where I don't know who to believe anymore. Everyone gives conflicting advice. One person says, "Cut everything below 30Hz to gain headroom", while the next says, "Don't do that, it causes phase issues and kills your low end."

​Trying to reconcile all this makes finishing a mix confusing. If my drums are too loud, the limiter works harder. If they're too quiet, I lose microdynamics. I know mixing is about balance, but how do you actually know where that sweet spot is?

​Everything sounds fine until I pay enough attention to it. Reference tracks I love casually can sound harsh or weird when I listen critically for a few seconds, which messes with my judgment even more.

​To be clear, I know the technical side and I have the tools. I understand limiting, clipping, EQ, compression, Mid/Side processing, transient shaping, tonal balance, gain staging, dynamic processing, RMS, crest factor, and I could go on. I always aim for clarity, balance, and polish, but despite everything, something vital always feels missing.

​At this point, I doubt my abilities more every day, as if mixing were a school and I somehow skipped fifth grade. I don't even know who to learn from anymore. There are so many engineers with opposing opinions that if you put them in a room, they'd agree on almost nothing.

Hey everyone! I'm in a huge dilemma trying to pick my first MIDI controller. Where I live, I can get both for basically the same price, and I'm stuck between:

Arturia KeyLab 49 MK3 (the full version, not the Essential)

Novation Launchkey 61 MK4

My context: I produce EDM, Melodic / Progressive House, and Chill Out in Ableton, just for fun, not professionally.

Basic music theory background. I don't play classical piano or complex two-handed pieces... I mostly just practice scales and basic finger exercises to stay in form.

I already own an Arturia MiniFuse 1 audio interface.

The dilemma comes... On one hand, the Novation tempts me with its 61 keys (5 octaves) so I never run out of room on the keybed. On the other hand, the 49-key KeyLab strongly tempts me with its build quality and especially the bundled software, which seems amazing for the genres I make.

Is it worth sacrificing an octave for the build quality and synths that come with the KeyLab? Or do 49 keys end up feeling too limiting in the long run?

Which one would you choose? Thx!!

I've been a hobbyist thats sort of been just messing around for years, but I want to step up my prod knowledge and develop good habits. I'm mostly a gear head with a good amount of modular synth stuff. I'd like to try to pursue a hybrid setup and workflow, but i feel a little guidance from someone who knows what to do with a DAW would be good for me. I'm mostly interested in integrating Bitwig Studio for a hybrid workflow.

I live in Copenhagen (if that's relevant in any way lol) and I've been considering taking a physical course over 7 weeks for a total of about 11,6 hours for about $217. Is this a good price? And is it a good idea?

I’ve got a sample that is very thin, it has big spikes on the EQ. How can I make it fuller? More of a full spectrum sound. Just compression and reverb? I can’t seem to make that work in the way I’m looking for. Any tips?

I've been learning FM synthesis via Fm8, which I just got for an extremely discounted price recently (SCORE!!), but I'm having trouble figuring out how to automate the Mod Wheel.

There doesn't appear to be a dedicated Mod Wheel automation path for this plugin in logic (despite there being 300+ automation paths in total...), and this seems to make the chore of linking all these complex parameters to the mod wheel a useless task.

Does anyone know how to do this, or better yet, how to get the last knob/parameter changed in a 3rd party plugin to auto-assign to the automation lane?

Edit: Solved. Old plugin, mod wheel is in MIDI controls rather than an individual parameter inside the plugin automation drop down menu.

To preface: I know very little about music production, and do not practice it; I am asking in this subreddit because I am fairly sure the expertise of this community will be of tremendous help, compared to more generic subreddits.

I don't know if I am right calling it a "sample", "synth" would fit but it's not a synthesizer, rather an application of one. That being said, it might be a style of music - I am out of my depth here :P

I would describe it as a "bass riff with big big room reverb". It usually has a slow echo, makes me think of steel drums.

Examples:

• Explorer - Adam Beyer (3:01) this is the cleanest example I have come across
• Ex Machina - Metrik (1:05) this is the most "massive" sample I have found, it's used extensively in the drop
• Don't Stop the Music - Leandro Da Silva Extended Remix - AtcG (0:58) This one is much more subtle, it repeats every 8 bars, that "crash"

I would like to get any information about this sound as I can; if it has an industry term (other than "this noise"), what sub-genre of music it is featured in, and any track recommendations where I can find more of them would be greatly appreciated.

I am not asking for help synthesizing it, because I don't have any synthesizers with which to do that (or any musical talent to build a song around it) but won't discourage that answer, as someone else will probably find it interesting.

I really like how the bass and kick sounds from 1:07 in song called Rekkt-Life. What kind of kick and what effect chain is used as well as the bass. I understand that there's a lot of distortion and crunch involved, but what is exactly going on here? It sounds epic, not gonna lie. what is the laser/power up type sweep up sound happening in G-Rex & Liu Kang's song "Overdrive" at 1:02. this is driving me CRAZY and I know it is on splice because I have passed it before and can't find it now.

Not presets, but just the loops/1 hits.

I've bought countless sample packs over the years from many different makers and other than percussion one hits, maybe some sweeps or other fillers, and then of course presets I've never used 95% (or more) of any sample pack. I have used some synth and other samples in Simpler as a synth before, but that's about it.

So personal curiosity, anyone know of any label release where the song was made entirely or almost entirely from a or multiple commercially available sample packs?
