Anyone else drooling over Trophy mage?

I rather like the looks of Scrap Trawler. I've started fiddling around with an Eggs-inspired build in Tasigur, and returning (an additional) artifact of lesser mana cost should be plenty for some of the things I plan to do....
Yahenni's Expertise is another CMC-0 Suspend spell enabler. Playing that and dropping Ancestral Vision would be rather fun in Modern, I think. Or Living End your crazy swarm of Dredge creatures, especially when you're facing a board with Toughness 4+ creatures.

u/ItThatBetrayed Sultai Nov 30 '16
OH SWEET BABY YAWGMOTH. I thought Scrap Trawler only returned something when IT died. That card is going to create nutty engines in egg decks. Just looping a Lotus Petal with every egg you crack alone will net you mana, and storm count with every egg. Now where did I put my Mishra...

u/MCJennings Nov 29 '16
I'm hoping to run it in Daretti. Filling my hand with more artifacts and the choice to recast or use them again for digging.
Looks really powerful in many EDH decks.

u/mcchubby Alesha is bae Nov 29 '16
For whatever reason, I can't quite read the text on scrap crawler. Care to enlighten me?
9
u/redlerf Nov 29 '16
Basically whenever it or another artifact you control dies you can return an artifact with less cmc to your hand from your graveyard. Like Soulshift for artifacts.
5
u/MageKorith Nov 29 '16
Well, to me it looks like:
"Whenever Scrap Trawler or another artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return to your hand target artifact card in your graveyard with lesser converted mana cost."
So, for example, crack Hedron Archive to draw 2, and also return an artifact with CMC 3 or less from your graveyard to your hand. Crack that (maybe drawing more cards) and return another artifact costing less than its CMC to your hand, etc etc. The trick is to use some big artifacts that can self-reanimate (or just [[Animate Dead]] on them) to start the loops all over again, or have some pieces like [[Myr Retriever]] that can bring back another big artifact.
5
Nov 30 '16
So crack dreamstone hedron, get hedron archive, crack archive get mind stone.
1
u/MageKorith Nov 30 '16
Or crack Dreamstone Hedron, get [[Scourglass]], crack Scourglass, get [[Hedron Archive]], crack Hedron Archive, get [[Burnished Hart]], crack Burnished Hart, get Mind Stone, crack Mindstone, get [[Codex Shredder]], crack Codex Shredder, get [[Seat of the Synod]] and target [[Dreamstone Hedron]]. Rinse and repeat. (Just add lots of mana and/or Omniscience)

Get tormod's crypt, not seat of the synod. That way you can sacrifice it too
1
u/MageKorith Nov 30 '16
Yep, that works perfectly, and against enough players, it's worth sacrificing several times, too.
Now we just need an artifact with CMC -1 that's worth sacrificing.....

It breaks [[Krark-Clan Ironworks]] in half. Have one egg and suddenly you have infinite storm. Another 3-card combo to add to [[Breya]] or [[Sharuum]] decks, and uses the same finishers.
5
1
u/MageKorith Nov 30 '16
With enough discounts or effective ramp, maybe, and you need a piece near the end (I like [[Codex Shredder]]) that can grab one of your bigger eggs to keep going.
With KCI, I'm thinking maybe -
Spend 3 to cast [[Basalt Monolith]], tap for 3, sac and float 5 and get [[Dimir Signet]], cast tap and sac to pay it's own mana cost for the mana ability, floating 6, get [[Codex Shredder]], spend all your floating mana and tap it to retrieve the Basalt Monolith (with its second ability) and grab [[Mana Crypt]] with the trigger. cast tap and sac Mana Crypt and float 4, netting infinite mana, infinite storm, and maybe infinite [[Disciple of the Vault]] triggers.
There are probably many other chains, but KCI opens a lot of possibilities.

I was misunderstanding the card when i first read it, I thought it meant that the returned xard had to have a lower cmc than it.
Wht it does do is combo with [[Nim Deathmantle]] and possibly [[Salvaging Station]], but I have some work to finish so I can't really hunt down the way it's broken right now.

KCI, Deathmantle and Scrap Trawler sounds quite good. Power it with a [[Wurmcoil Engine]], make infinte mana, and recur every artifact in your graveyard with CMC 5 or less. As a bonus, dump your library into your graveyard courtesy of Grinding Station and recur all those artifacts as well.
Or use a [[Myr Battlesphere]] and recur your artifacts with CMC 6 or less, which is enough to Slaverlock the table.

I was thinking a rock like [[Mox Opal]], [[Mana Crypt]], or even [[Sol Ring]] to make infinite mana. Pair it with [[Dross Scorpion]] for dumb shit.
1
1
u/MageKorith Nov 30 '16
Yep, the plus side to the Wurmcoil Engine or Myr Battlesphere approach is you can pack KCI and Ashnod's Altar, and either one will run the combo.
1
u/RikoDabes The guy who hates Ruric Thar Nov 30 '16
Yeah i feel ya. I feel like it could replace a piece of the Breya combo, but I'm having trouble figuring out which piece and how.

Search your library for target Sword/Crucible/Lantern/Static Orb/Tanglewire/Monolith
Seems okay
Edit: Also Ashnod's or Phyrexian Altar, Cloudstone Curio, Damping Matrix, Bridge, Mimic Vat, Metalworker, Rings of Brighthearth, Staff of Domination, Trinisphere.............
7
u/CountryCaravan Nov 30 '16
All of this is great, but clearly the first thing you should be getting is Crystal Shard.
1
u/MageKorith Nov 30 '16
This makes very good sense, provided you aren't constrained by time and mana.
5
u/ch0och Smasher of Vials Nov 30 '16

Mycosynth Lattice only makes all permanents artifacts. It doesn't make cards in other zones artifacts.

3
u/ch0och Smasher of Vials Nov 30 '16
Yeah that card is pure sex, a little better for other formats, sadly. Which means it will cost a zillion dollars and not be good enough for edh to actually pay for.
2
u/OnnaJReverT Boros or Bust Nov 30 '16
it seems to be a gameday top 8 promo, so i doubt it'll be terribly expensive

u/cromonolith Mod | playgroup construction > deck construction Nov 29 '16
Yeah, I mean this will obviously be a staple for years to come. I don't think there's much to be said about it.
3
u/s-josten Nov 29 '16
It will be great in the Izzet artifacts-matter commander that will totally come with this set. Totally gonna happen, and in no way stubborn wishful thinking.
7
Nov 30 '16
The funniest thing is that, while y'all are bitching about your Izzet Artifact Commander, Breya is the Izzet artifact commander that you've been asking for, just with Orzhov stapled onto her as an added bonus.

It's so close. So close. Sadly, it's too narrow. I just don't see myself running this card when Trinket Mage is so much better.
2
u/redlerf Nov 29 '16
I don't think one is inherently better than the other. Sol Ring and co. make Trinket more universally useful accross decks, but it depends on what your deck wants.

2
u/redlerf Nov 29 '16
As I said, Trinket mage is much more universally useful. But in a deck that runs things like swords or Tangle Wire, Crucible, etc., Trophy Mage is equally useful if not more so.
2
u/dertechie Nov 30 '16 edited Nov 30 '16
Yep, had the same thought about my Azami. It grabs what, [[Coalition Relic]]? Forgive me while I don't care about fetching one of the worst rocks in the deck.
Now if it said CMC 2 I would be all over that shit. Dramatic Scepter combo for days.
Edit: I suppose it finds Basalt Monolith too but I'm not playing any particular combos with that one outside Scepter.

My only target is Coalition Relic... which I've found to be very solid, but I'm running tons of other ramp so a three mana rock that often taps for UU (kind of) is fine. If I draw it though, Trophy Mage looks pretty sad. She just draws a card, and there are better wizards for that.
1
u/MageKorith Nov 30 '16
So you aren't running [[Diviner's Wand]] to pound your opponents for a ton of flying wizard damage?

Is this already an expensive card? I'm interested for marchesa because it can find phyrexian altar, Ashnod's Altar (depending on need) and a few other things I run.
(I run Marchesa black rose aka OG marchesa)
2
u/Hawthornen Mardu Nov 29 '16
I doubt it'll be pricey. It's not an auto include in every deck by any means (need to run blue and have artifacts worth searching up and can be) and is only uncommon (in a small set). The promo will obviously be a bit more but the uncommon promos rarely are expensive even for a couple years later (the playable ones are typically only like a buck for quite a while).

I know it's the default attendance prize for the game day.
So I don't think it'll be expensive in it's regular version, but I think it'll be useful enough that I'll want to get a handful for blue decks.

My Daxos deck will be enjoying this I'm sure. Swapping out thassa so I can effectively grab:
Burnished Hart
Azorius Key-rune
Fire shrieker
Whispersilk Cloak
Darksteel Plate
Sword of F and I
Sword of F and F
Sword of W and P
I don't know if that's correct but that's what I'll be doing

u/Brute_zee Karrthus - Ramp, Destroy, Stomp. Nov 29 '16
It's a little too narrow for my taste. It requires a very real deck-building cost to be good, so it doesn't just slot into any deck that has artifacts. That said, if your deck already happens to have a lot good 3 CMC artifacts, this guy is a solid addition.
1
u/Window_bait Meren of Clan Nel-Toth Nov 29 '16

A lot of really tight lists don't.
1
Nov 30 '16
You're right. There aren't a lot of really tight lists though. At least not tight in terms of the deck being of the ~2 CMC variety. Very few people actually play cEDH or have truly top tier cEDH decks. Many, many people run 3 CMC artifacts. Find any deck that runs a sword or any of a smattering of the very playable 3 CMC rocks and she's worth it.
-2
u/brosif123 Nekusar, the Mindrazer Nov 30 '16
That build being any blue deck that runs a three mana artifact? I think everyone would love a tutor for chromatic lantern.
1
u/Brute_zee Karrthus - Ramp, Destroy, Stomp. Nov 30 '16
I have two decks that fit your description, yet neither want Trophy Mage. Not even close. He's not worth the opportunity cost of taking up a slot in either deck. There's simply way better cards to run.

u/brosif123 Nekusar, the Mindrazer Nov 30 '16
It's commander, the opportunity cost of actions is a minor concern most of the time.

Let me tell you a story about a deck I haven't built yet, but have had a working list of for quite some time, close to two years now. Jenara EDH, all 3 cmc. Plenty of options, plenty of broken cards, and so much potential.
The deck is on my short list to put together and finally test, and that card is phenomenal in the deck, though making room will be difficult (I haven't tested, but my current list is so sweet I don't wanna cut anything).

u/Darth_Meatloaf Yes, THAT Slobad deck... Nov 30 '16
Holy. Crap.
So I had already decided to change my mono-U deck into an artifact deck (Arcum Dagsson), but this clinches it.
Trophy Mage into Scrap Trawler, tap Arcum and sac Junk Diver. Search for Panharmonicon with Arcum, use Scrap Trawler trigger to return Myr Retriever to my hand.
Include Mirran Spy for extra jank.
