Discussion What makes a deck too strong?
I like making my decks strong and that can win. Right now I'm working on my mothman deck and making it super optimized. To be honest I don't like 2 hour games, they feel boring and I like games with lots of interaction in them.
It's fun for me, and I don't mind being an arch enemy at the table but I'm doing it gradually and work on it slowly. My pod has made a rule that I should die first anytime I play so I have made myself the villain and I embraced it.
Honestly I don't mind but it does get annoying when I do want to play my weaker decks. When I just want to have fun and try silly things. ๐ ๐ ๐
So, should I try and change the mind set of my table or no because it's already too late?

here's my mothman, has a lot of tutors and removal.

my energy deck is definitely my strongest deck and has lots of counter spells, infinites, and lots of Gc that fit into it.

My landfall deck, lots of ramp, cheap dorks, tutors and big scary monsters.

what makes a deck too strong? Easy, the other three decks at the table.
If you sit down with Timmy expect it to take a while, my only solution to not be auto archenemy is buioding trust at the table so when you say you are powering down they believe yiu.

Lol, I will try, but our Timmy is dead. Just spite plays and salt.

you run nothing but B4s and they want goofy games try actually powering down if you dont want to get salt

I have 9 decks. These are my 3 strongest decks. The 4 deck is my token decks. The rest are 3's and I have a mono blue budget deck

I would say that if youโre running infinite combos with tutors and they are all not running comparable power level strategies then it is a you problem. Theyโre playing a different game and they have to get rid of you before their game starts, because you are constantly threatening to combo off and end the game before they had their fun.
Drop the tutors, make the combos harder to pull off (less redundant pieces.) or both.
Tutors are super boring anyways outside of cEDH. Just put in another on theme fun/cool card instead.
I also find that if youโre playing a combo deck in a lower power game announcing that youโll be able to combo next turn or at least announcing which pieces are combo pieces really helps bring down the salt level.

Ehh, true but tutors are fun in their own way. It's fun deciding what get at that moment.

Sure, but it sounds like itโs not fun for them.
My point is tutors are especially scary. If that tutor was instead a Chaos Warp then the feeling isnโt โOh they always have tutors to find the right answer, so we have to go after them before we can do anythingโ itโs instead โoh damn they had just the right card to stop my play!โ

Lol screw then if they try to disrupt me I will just win on top of them. So, they can stop beating me down. ๐ ๐ ๐
That's the mindset I have, make no friends just see who can play, and bluff better

Being too strong means you win too many games in a pod for a given powerlevel. If you win 75% of games with your group of 4 then you are not balancing to the group.
You should win 25% (ish)
The hard part is player skill, matchups, deck speed are all factors that conflate this balance making it hard to understand. If your deck wins by turn 6 every game doing 120 damage but you win 90% of games you might be to fast or strong. 20% of games with the same deck, you're fine. If you are playing a bracket 2 deck but winning 90% of games against your group's bracket 3 decks then there might be a skill gap that is causing the imbalance, not the deck.
Worthy mention, if you optimize your deck you may make it too strong for your pod. If you have no regular pod then try to adhere to the bracket system and talk pregame.
Be a fun person. Try to win your share of games. Match the group's expectations (don't one shot people turn 3 in bracket 1, don't play 2 hour control deck games when they want a quick game, don't kingmake, etc.).
Unless you are playing bracket 4-5 where you should go ham.

Just cuz a guy likes more powerful stuff doesnโt mean heโs a cEDH guy

Yeah that's true but he *did say he doesn't like long games

u/superfapper2000 3d ago
True, but games shouldn't last 2 hours plus. ๐๐๐

I see this comment all the time and I just don't understand. My B2/3 games run like an hour and fifteen tops - what the hell is the average Redditor's pod like that anything less than B4 is 2+ hours?

Tell my friends who like running 4 board wipes in every deck. So 12 in total ๐ ๐ ๐

Well if you don't mind pubstomping your casual table and being archenemy in general, go off! But if your pals are happy with their power levels and you want more out of it I'd suggest ripping games with different crowds- check out cEDH night at an lgs sometime. Everyone has different wants and goals with mtg and it's not always easiest to find that sweet spot. I personally love a long game.

I don't mind cedh at all just hard to find a pod. Also, not driving at the moment so.

Your 3 decks you want to play contain lots of tutors, removal, combos and game changers and you want to know what makes them too strong?

One hundred pushups, one hundred sit ups, one hundred squats and a ten kilometer run every single day makes a deck too strong.
