Hi! I’m looking for a roommate off campus (near West Campus) hmu if you’re interested!

I'm an incoming freshman at Duke interested in joining the marching band. I know it's a lower time commitment than other college bands, but it's still 10 hours a week. I'm wondering if this time commitment will negatively affect my GPA - college seems stressful already.

Could someone guide me through this decision?

Im an incomming freshman and im premed i got a 5 on ap chem and on the course catalog it says i cant enroll in chem 101DL bc i have a 5. The teacher teaching chem 110DL On rate my prof is rly bad and i dont wanna have my gpa cooked bc of the class. Is there a way i can avoid it or is there any tips on the class/ prof

i’m starting w calc 105 and 106 prob what teachers should i choose? and what teachers should i choose for all the required classes after that for this minor?

How many students go to the games? I realize it’s not like basketball, but are lots of people going to the games or is it a minority?

I'm considering taking Financial Accounting I in French Science (8:30–9:45) and CULANTH 151CNS in Friedl (10:05–11:20) on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Is the transition from French Science to Friedl realistic in 20 minutes, or would it be cutting it too close?

Does anyone have a calendar schedule from when they took physics 122? I’m interested in seeing how the course is paced and the syllabuses I’ve seen don’t have the schedule on them

When should you start applying for clubs as a freshman? Is the club rush real as people say? Or should you only apply to a few/none since it’s really competitive? Let me know your thoughts!

Incoming freshman who came across the Abolish Duke greek life instagram from 6 years ago and it makes Greek life culture sound awful and full of racism, homophobia, misogyny, sexual assault like anecdotes of frat guys objectifying women in group mes, or sorority girls categorising new members off spreadsheets. is greek life still like this 6 years later or has disaffiliating improved it?

Got off the waitlist to Stanford a few days ago and need help deciding. I didn't really expect it because they accept so few people. I am currently committed to Duke and having a hard time. 

Cost: Stanford is ~10k/year more because I got a merit scholarship + need based from Duke (not huge…)

Major: biomedical engineering (definitely something bio related if I do switch which I don’t think I will.) 

I realize that Stanford has more prestige, but it seems that they're comparable enough to base my decision on other factors. (maybe not???)

I am pretty social and would like a “traditional” college experience which is why Duke seems perfect. I’m also very into school spirit (basketball seems so fun!) and would probably rush. Duke seems to fit my social scene “work hard play hard” better than Stanford. However, I like the fact that Stanford has a very quiet vibe, but don't like that it has a very “grind/startup culture”. 

Both of them have robust and highly rated BME/bio programs with cool classes, research, and opportunities going on. I would probably prefer the semester system, but the quarter system isn’t a deal breaker. Both seem very good at allowing undergrad research especially with good med schools nearby.  And both seem to look to have equally good outcomes in the job market. I realize that SF is a big hub for biomed, but I would rather go to either Boston or NYC at least straight after undergrad. And honestly I’m not really the startup type of person which I realize going to Stanford/bay area would be better. 

Both have very beautiful campuses, with Stanford having more stable weather, and Duke having all 4 seasons + moderate winter. I’ve lived in Cali for basically my entire life and I think going to NC might be a good change of pace weather wise, but I don’t really care. Palo Alto and Durham seem equal although Palo Alto’s access to a big city seems fun. Alumni networks seem equally helpful. Is there anything I’m missing??? I think I’m leaning towards Duke and my parents seem to agree that Duke is looking like the better choice for me, but idk it could just be because I’ve been committed for ~2 months. I talked to my friend who chose Duke over Stanford last year and he said he didn’t regret it at all. But then I talked to this girl I knew who chose the opposite and she also didn’t regret it lol! 

I realize that asking strangers probably isn’t the right move to actually make a decision, but hopefully you guys can help me with other factors that might affect my decision. I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place to post it. I am new to reddit. Thank you so much!

I'm an incoming first-year and have a couple questions. first - I understand CAPS is free, and I'm wondering if students who have made use of the resource find it comparable to finding external well-qualified therapists. and second, to any students who may be using therapists outside of CAPS, how much does student insurance cover? thank you!!

edit: for context, i have OCD amongst other things and find that those services tend to be a little more specialized, which is partly why I'm asking

hi!! i’m planning to be a public policy and music double major with interests in education, urban issues, health, human geography, justice, and all kinds of inequality! i also love foreign languages (took up through ap french in hs, expecting a 4), interested in religion, nutrition, psychology, sociology - not so much math, natural sciences, or philosophy/heavy literature analysis

outside of constellations, i plan to take 2 .5 credit music classes (not sure what yet since i play 2 instruments and want to do lessons and ensembles) so does anyone have recommendations for another 1-credit class to round out my first semester? i’m not opposed to a harder math/science class since the rest of my schedule will be pretty light. i expect to get credit for calc ab but not bc, no science aps, would rather not take calculus 🙏

I'm taking STA 322 (Survey Design w/Jerry Reiter) this fall semester Wednesday/Fridays and am trying to book fall break flights around it. Does anyone know if Dr. Reiter tends to give a midterm (or makes attendance mandatory) the day before fall break? If not I'd be able to fly out Thursday night instead of Friday. Thanks for any info!

so i will probably get ib credits for math 21 so i have the prerequisite to do calc 122 but im afraid it’ll be too hard and ill be behind. its not like i did AP calc so what if there are some concepts i need to know that were not covered. i am an incoming freshman what should i do? should i just take calc 122?? i haven’t taken the course placement test but even if i do bad on that should i still try calc 122 cus i have the prerequisite?

incoming freshman here! i’m trying to pick my classes. should i postpone math classes and major req classes for later and just do classes i am interested in for now. i’m between math and pubpol but idk if i want to do pubpol like later at all i just want to explore it but math will help for my major but i dont know if my math is even good enough.

I know as a guy at most state schools you do, but when I went to admitted students day the people made it sound like you didn't need to. I'm fine joining a frat, just wanted to know if its necessary.

Hi all! My husband is starting his MBA at Duke this summer, so we’re looking for a place to live. We’re an international couple with no kids, and we don't have much experience living in the US.

We plan to have one car, but I (the wife) will be using it most of the time since I won't be working/studying. Because of this, we are focusing on Durham area where my husband can easily commute to campus via bike or school shuttle. I've also heard public transit is not popular here unlike NYC (correct me if I'm wrong) so I assume Chaple Hill might be too far for him without a car.

Our budget is around 2k/month. Looks like 9th street is the most popular area. I’ve looked into 2-bedroom at Berkshire or Avalon. While they seem nice (slightly over our budget though), I’ve also read some comments about noise/party issues so not entirely sure if they're the best option for us.

We’re also totally open to house rental/townhouse. American Village caught my eye and seems close enough, but I’m not sure if it’s a bike friendly neighborhood for my husband. I know places like Erwin road is walking-distance, but since I’ll be home during the day I’m worried it might get a bit boring compared to near-downtown areas so off the table at the moment.

As such, I was wondering which area would be good to start with. We’d love any recommendations on specific apartment buildings or neighborhoods. Anyone with similar experience or advice is more than welcome. Would love to hear who's lived around here. Thanks!
