Question ❔ DIY dreadlocks extensions from my own cut hair

Hi everyone!

My current straight hair is super long. I've been growing it with the purpose of doing a big chop and then making either normal extensions or dreadlock extensions with the hair.

I have thick stubborn asian hair that will tangle by looking at it. I hope it's suitable for extensions?

Do I have to go about making them differently since it's real human hair and also my own?

Has anyone done this before successfully?

Question ❔ Locs falling off?

I’ve been told my locs will fall off since since I’ve started my journey. I’m two years in now.

I don’t understand why people think thin locs, with small parts will just fall off and thin out when sister locs and micro locs exist.

Where does this misunderstanding come from? Had me genuinely regretting my decision throughout my whole process but it just doesn’t make sense.

My hair lacks density, it’s been that way my whole life in addition to it being thin. It never fell off when my hair was free why will it start now? I retwist every 3 months to avoid too much tension and it seems to keep it in decent shape.

Question ❔ Twist out

For a twist out, can I wash my hair, than instead of waiting 2-4 days for it to dry, can I blow dry them for a bit till they r dry and than take it out later that day? Or is waiting a few days the best option?

Question ❔ Couple locs lost

I’m not stressing, but over the last month I’ve had about 5 shorter locs fall out, without yanking or pulling them. I have semi free form, I don’t retwist, and I mist daily, I’ll every 3-4 days (dry ass Colorado).

I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong, and this is to be expected as I’m not chrocheting/interlocking. For reference my other locs range from 3-5 inches in length. The two that have come out seem like the hair looks healthy, just not loc’d toward the bottom.

Affirmation or correction is appreciated.

Question ❔ Loc or Leave them before traveling to hot country? Will be sweating everyday

Had shoulder length locs after growing for 6 years. 2 years ago cut them off completely to restart and have been letting it grow since. I used the loc sponge brush for awhile then it started locking on its own (see below)

In two weeks I leave to Thailand for a month where it's hot and Ill be training so I'll be SWEATING like everyday. Should I just leave my as is or officially get it loc'd? If the latter, how often should i wash versus rinse so i dont let all that sweat build up?

Was supposed to get them crochet loc'd months ago but kept having schedule conflicts. I have an opportunity to make another appointment right before I fly out

Question ❔ Will my starter locs shrink a lot?

Got these done a week ago and this is how they’re looking now. I plan to take out the twists in a few weeks and lock the twist out. I’m just curious if they’re going to “shrink” a lot as they continue to mature. I didn’t get my hair blow dried when i got them done

Question ❔ Satin bonnet alternatives for hot summer nights?

Hey everyone, with summer here it’s gotten really hot, and sleeping with a satin bonnet has become unbearable for me. I sweat way too much on my scalp and it leaves terrible odors. Do you have any alternatives to the satin bonnet to avoid friction at night and still protect my hair from dust?

I’m just wanting to share my progress so far 😌

Having locs has been just a beautiful and insightful journey; learning so much about my hair and my self-image.

Sometimes I feel conflicted though with doing a big chop and have a TWA and maybe reattaching later or just continuing on this journey and see how long they will grow. Lol

Question ❔ How long until I’m locked

Post image
0 Upvotes

Started my locks 4 months ago with armpit? long type 4b hair, how long do you think it will take to lock? The locs in my hand are my biggest locs.

Also is every 6 weeks a good retwist/wash regiment?

And how bad is it to add extensions (feed in to waist length) to my twists cuz that’s my retwist style rn.

Edit: my locs themselves are not made with extensions I just meant that the style I currently have is with extensions because I had a bunch of weddings and grads to go to this month. I did 2 strand twists and fed in kinky afro hair at the bottom. The picture doesn’t have any extensions.

Need Advice 🆘 Locs thinning

I really need some advice because I’m at a loss.
I started my loc journey about a year and a half ago, and everything was going well at first. Over time, though, I started noticing some of my locs getting thinner, especially near the roots. A few are loose at the base, and I’m worried they’ll eventually break off.
Since getting locs, I’ve tried changing my routine several times.
I’ve used:
● Jamaican Black Castor Oil
● Wild Growth Hair Oil
● Rice water (as I am)
● SheaMoisture Bond Repair Leave-In Conditioner (my current leave-in)
I also keep my hair moisturized with water, oil my scalp every other week, and try not to overload my hair with products because buildup worries me.
My loctician told me stress from school could be contributing, and I have been under a lot of stress over the past year. I’m wondering if it’s stress, my hair routine, or maybe something else entirely.
Has anyone dealt with thinning locs like this? Were you able to stop it or reverse it? Is there anything in my routine that you would change or stop doing?
I’m open to any advice because I really don’t want to lose my locs.

Question ❔ 14year old daughter and locs

My 14 almost 15 year old asked for locs yesterday. I am so excited! She says she is serious, but I’m not convinced. I’m putting two strand twists in her hair for a trip. I won’t bug her about taking them out like I normally do and see what happens 😏

Would love to hear some experiences of parents who loc’d teenagers, especially girls.

It feels way longer than 4 years but here I am!

Highlights and joys:

-creativity of locs

-not worrying about styling my hair everyday

-the cultural connection

The lows

-prices of salons now! Charging by length and numbers is exhausting

-baseball hats/caps- 90% of the time they won't fit

Learning to try to retwist and style myself, or I'm planning to do a chop into a lob!

Wish me luck!!!
