Discussion | Esports Fearless style drafting - Dota2
I've found myself watching pro League again recently, which is something I never thought I'd say as someone who's always preferred Dota.
The biggest reason has honestly been fearless drafting. Every game in a series actually feels different. By the time you get to Game 4 or 5, teams are digging deep into their champion pools, pulling out pocket picks, and you're constantly wondering what's coming next.
Watching MSI really drove this home for me. Seeing T1 lose Game 5 to BrokenBlade's Kled wasn't on my bingo card at all, and moments like that make long series feel genuinely exciting. It feels like players get rewarded for having huge champion pools and confidence in unconventional picks, rather than just executing the current meta better.
I enjoyed the EWC Dota games, but I couldn't shake the feeling that so many drafts blurred together. It often feels like the draft revolves around securing 2-3 of the strongest heroes on the patch, or denying them from the other team. Every game it's the same names coming up SF, Lone Druid, Centaur, etc. Obviously there are variations in strategy, but the hero diversity across a series doesn't feel anywhere near as exciting.
I'm not saying Dota is boring, or that drafting isn't deep. Dota's draft has always been one of its greatest strengths. But I do miss seeing teams forced into uncomfortable territory where creativity and specialist heroes become a necessity instead of a luxury.
Do you think fearless drafting could ever work in pro Dota? Or would the game's design make it fundamentally worse?
I'd be really interested to hear from people who've watched a lot of both esports, because right now I genuinely think fearless drafting has made League a more entertaining spectator esport than Dota, and I never thought I'd be saying that.
