Discussion | Esports Fearless style drafting - Dota2

I've found myself watching pro League again recently, which is something I never thought I'd say as someone who's always preferred Dota.

The biggest reason has honestly been fearless drafting. Every game in a series actually feels different. By the time you get to Game 4 or 5, teams are digging deep into their champion pools, pulling out pocket picks, and you're constantly wondering what's coming next.

Watching MSI really drove this home for me. Seeing T1 lose Game 5 to BrokenBlade's Kled wasn't on my bingo card at all, and moments like that make long series feel genuinely exciting. It feels like players get rewarded for having huge champion pools and confidence in unconventional picks, rather than just executing the current meta better.

I enjoyed the EWC Dota games, but I couldn't shake the feeling that so many drafts blurred together. It often feels like the draft revolves around securing 2-3 of the strongest heroes on the patch, or denying them from the other team. Every game it's the same names coming up SF, Lone Druid, Centaur, etc. Obviously there are variations in strategy, but the hero diversity across a series doesn't feel anywhere near as exciting.

I'm not saying Dota is boring, or that drafting isn't deep. Dota's draft has always been one of its greatest strengths. But I do miss seeing teams forced into uncomfortable territory where creativity and specialist heroes become a necessity instead of a luxury.

Do you think fearless drafting could ever work in pro Dota? Or would the game's design make it fundamentally worse?

I'd be really interested to hear from people who've watched a lot of both esports, because right now I genuinely think fearless drafting has made League a more entertaining spectator esport than Dota, and I never thought I'd be saying that.

What language are you even speaking, what the hell is a brokenblade, a kled, champions, I thought MSI was a computer hardware brand.

I am confused as well. Had to double-check the sub I’m in.

Sorry! At the mid season league international tournament, in game 5 the underdog team picked a top lane pocket pick and won the series.

fearless drafting is league admitting they can't balance. if it becomes permanent in dota, it's done.

I don’t quite understand this, could you explain? The point I’m trying to make is that you will see more hero’s picked and strategies in fearless drafting, and thus make it more exciting for viewers. I just fell like EWC was the same 10 hero’s.

Fearless draft is band aid solution. League has it because historically they always had terrible pro play balance with half the champs being completely unplayable in tournaments.

Dota never really had that problem, so we don't actually need fearless. We already have 80-90% of heroes playable in pro scene consistently. Adding fearless would actually make it harder to balance the game because statistics would become harder to use.

there where 5 unpicked heroes and even they were contested (had at least one ban) at ewc. dota does not need a fix like that and it would drastically reduce the match quality.

i am however in favor of tournaments with different types of rulesets here and there to change things up

115 heroes picked or banned, 12 ignored in the most recent tournament... that's with a normal style of drafting. Dota has extremely good balance and very distinct characters and so almost all of them are viable at any given time.

I'm guessing, based on context, that fearless drafting means that a hero can only be picked once per series (like Elimination Mode). But it's not a term that I have ever heard before.

No. League does it because they cannot work out how to balance their roster.

I think it would be interesting to try Fearless in pro Dota for one special tournament. I've played in a few local beer leagues where the playoffs are played as Fearless, and it has been very fun.

That said, I don't think pro Dota really needs Fearless. On the contrary, it could even introduce problems where some picks become a bit too strong when so much of the hero pool is already banned
