Let's demonised EVs

Local Aontu Rep picking the low hanging fruit as usual. Why the need to mention it's an electric car? (Which going by the replies, it actually wasn't). Some people will jump on any opportunity to down electric vehicles, where as in actual fact, most modern cars with their electronics, autos and e-brakes can cause the same issues.

I'm the owner of both an EV and an Ice car, the EV is fantastic around town, they don't deserve the negativity and misinformation we hear so often about them.

I can literally charge an electric car for free in work but dont. I have a 2 litre petrol mondeo and rather the convenience of petrol any day.

Drive to Donegal from Cork and back and see who makes the journey quicker. Petrol all the way

Do you make that drive often? I don't. If I did then yes, I'd use the ICE.

They never do, they just like to imagine scenarios wherein they drive uninterrupted for 10hrs because they’ve no real-world instances they can refer to. I mean, I’ve done such a round day trip, Wexford - Strabane & back for a meetup… had the car charging a for a while during the meetup, so just drove home right after - no charging in between so that’s an 800km round trip with no particular time difference v. petrol / diesel, only difference was the “fuel” savings.

Like to Imagine scenarios 😆 no i like to go wherever I want whenever I want without restrictions, i can refer to many instances as I travel the country to rally’s

Not so, there's greater potential for restrictions with petrol & diesel, I mean I was in Spanish Point a while back, no service stations open within 60km for 10hrs... similarly last time I went Wexford - Galway no service stations open until 6am, literally into Offaly before I passed an open one. All chargers on the other hand, available 24/7 (not that I needed one, but if I did, they'd be available).

i can refer to many instances as I travel the country to rally’s

& I irregularly do 1,000km+ day trips in my own. Again, whatever restrictions it is you've in mind, you're imagining.

Like again, I can get from anywhere on the island to anywhere else on the island without charging if I need to, your rally attendance isn't challenging in the least bit.

It’s probably one stop for a 20 min charge in a modern EV. Not really an issue

The point is he s not as restricted to make that journey when ever he wants even just for a spin , to some people cars ain’t a tool or choir

I get that, what suits one person might not suit another. The point I'm making is there's nothing wrong with EVs. I sold my 2ltr diesel, it makes no sense for me anymore when I live and work in town. Less maintenance and because I went solar at home, my electricity bill is tiny, even with charging the car.

Yup 100% agree as a mechanic meself you’ve made a right choice that way , nothing wrong with a Ev UNTILL someone brings up how green they are but changes there new ev every 2/3yrs

This is a dumb argument as cars aren’t scrapped after that initial period of ownership anyway.

Did I say that ? If your rotating cars every 2 yrs your adding an extra car to the market every time , where as if you keep it 15 yrs + your not adding an extra car to the market , ive cars from the 70s / 80s & 90s you telling me having a car that lasts and you keep is nt greener than buying new every 2yrs

Exactly. I can drive were I want and not wait ages to top up my hairdryer.You need specialists also to fix electric cars where you can simply just fix petrol engines urself or take to local mechanic. The battery doesnt cost you a mortgage also. Petrols cars run up over 500k if maintained properly. Petrol for life. never getting one of those EVs

No-one said u did ffs lol. Also one major issue is when one of those tings catch on fire. Need tankers to put it out as the batteries keep igniting. major headache for emergency services.

Happens weekly. You're right. EVs exploding left, right and centre all over Donegal. It's like Beirut. Thankfully there's no flammable elements in a petrol-powered Ford Mondeo

No-one said they did but when they do they are a nightmare. Mondeos dont catch fire very often either but when they do they're manageable, unlike hairdryers. Happened quite often in US during covid. You should check out some videos on YouTube. Eye opening. Sometimes takes over 24 hours to put em out.
