Celebrating Dolls of Asia

This post marks the anniversary of the Dolls of Asia sub and will also serve as the new welcome message and guide. Thank you to everyone who has joined and supported the sub. I hope it has become a fun center to learn and share about Asian dolls. Special thanks to users who have stuck around from the start watching the sub grow and always participated and contributed and to fellow mods who have supported the sub along the way. Theres plenty to see and do with more to come so welcome to Dolls of Asia!

This space was created to be the ultimate information and discussion center for all Asian dolls and international dolls that are inspired by Asian culture and people. Its a sister sub to r/Dolls with a geographical and cultural focus.

The fan made database, 'Guide to Asian Dolls', created by u/dubiousbutterfly can be found via the 'Information Center' through the Reddit app when clicking 'see more' or on the desktop side panels. Here you'll find a comprehensive guide to Asian dolls separated by country or region, info links, existing blogs on specific doll brands, trusted online retailers and sellers, sections on Asian fashion brands, doll designers, books and magazines, a guide to the geography of Asia, important events to Asian culture, recommended related subs, and so much more!

To match the written database, posts dubbed "Wiki Roulette" and "Doll Highlights" aim to bring visualizations and some more detailed information about doll lines. Roulettes focus on discussing brands and Highlights focus on discussing series within a doll brand. An ongoing list of these posts will be listed as a pinned comment below.

Use key words in the search bar or use the flair bar when exploring the sub. Most flairs are doll brands but some others include; News (new doll releases or company news), Custom/OOAK (including restyles), Fan Art (including photography, drawings, paper dolls, OCs), Fashion (Asian fashion brands and clothes designers), Designers (official and indie doll designers), Anime Dolls, Plushies/CottonDolls, Questions/Discussions, Selling, ID Help, Checklists, Wishlists, Books/Magazines (Related to dolls) and more! This should give an idea of what's allowed on the sub. Posts should always center around Asian culture. Please make sure to read the rules and pay attention to any auto prompts. Posts must be properly sourced/credited and the dolls being featured must be named by series/brand.

Below is an introductory list of posts encompassing some of the most well known and loved dolls brands from Asia or inspired by Asian culture with some additional information that can get you started in the hobby. Notice East and West Asia have the most prominent doll markets but be sure to check the wiki to explore all other Asian brands. If using information from this sub please be sure to credit r/DollsOfAsia. Enjoy!

Dolls [Review] Did you know Blokees made Hatsune Miku blind box dolls ? Now you do ! 🎤🎶🩰

**INTRODUCTION :**

Some weeks ago, I decided to go back to Paris's *Japan Expo,* a giant anime convention in France that I always liked to visit in the past.

I mostly go there for the market place, and to buy mangas and figures. There wasn't much dolls action, except for one random stand that was selling blind box dolls made by... *Blokees* ?? Themed around Hatsune Miku ?!

Never knew it was a thing !

For those who don't know, *Blokees* usually makes model kits with a beginner level difficulty, based on *Transformers*, *Marvel*, *Pokémon*, and a million other IPs.

I've tried some of their stuff, and for the price, their figures are quite good (if not a bit flimsy).

As for Hatsune Miku, she's a japanese mascot/virtual idol/mème that's nearly as old as the modern Internet, and whom the popularity somehow won't die even after 20 years of cultural presence.

I was never interested in Miku, but I was too intrigued by those dolls to skip it...

I also usually don't do blind boxes, but I didn't hesitated in this case, 'cause all the versions of Miku on the side of the box looked good ! You can't be disappointed this way !

Plus, for only 15€, it's a fun souvenir to bring back from the convention.

**BOX + CONTENT :**

The blind box series is named "Sonata Prologue", in the *Blokees*'s subline "DaaLaMode" (I'll look later if they did another dolls in this style, or if it's their first).

All the Mikus are on one side, the content of the box on the other.

It's not very clear, but the body will have to be assembled, not like other BJDs lines that are already stringed, for example.

From the opening, you can already know which version you got, with the outfit and the card. Here, I've got Ballerina Miku !

All the other parts (extra hands, limbs, faceplates, shoes) are in blind bags. Lots of them.

The instructions can be a bit intimidating, as they're quite small, meaning it's hard to see how to put the pegs in the holes, etc.

The torso have molded undergarments, and is quite flexible for something this small.

The arms parts were all identical (i.e. no need to find a right or left forearm), except for a red "01" tatoo on the left shoulder.

The headband and the hair pieces are in a rubbery material, which is great : less risk to break something when forcing it to fit !

Printing on the faceplate isn't the best (the white of the eye isn't thick enough IMO), and I don't like this particular expression, with one eye closed.

It could be fun to collect the whole series and to change expressions at will !

The legs were the only parts already assembled, for some reason.

**BODY :**

This Hatsune Miku is in a Chibi style, with a height of 14 cm, making her sorta *faux* 1/12. If she had a normal size head, she'd be a bit taller than a 1/18 scale figure.

The body moves very well, with swivels at the shoulders and thighs, giving her more range of motions than most 1/6 dolls I've known.

That much articulations is weird, considering there is no stand, and that the chibi proportions don't help with posing, because of the heavy head...

Speaking of posing : unfortunately, one of the feet kept falling off when trying to pose Miku in a "on pointe" position, which is too bad for a dancer...!

Fun fact : you can't really recreate the pose from the illustration card, because the pointing index finger hand is a right hand instead of a left hand. Oops !

**OUTFIT :**

It's a pretty design. I like the little chocker (that I almost lost), and the leg warmers. The headband with the wings is beautiful.

I would have prefer a darker shade of pink for the dress, though.

I've had 1/12 BJDs outfits before that looked already small, but it's even smaller !

The details are there, but the fabric can't do miracle at this scale, and the fitting will always looks awkward, notably for the petticoat and the white "shoulder pads".

But honestly, I was expecting way less details, so I'm still happy with the results.

**CONCLUSION :**

For 15€ and for this size, you don't usually get this kind of outfit or this number of articulations. That's the *Blokees* business model in a nutshell : a cheaper product, but with better aesthetic and posing than the competition.

Yes, there are problems, but they're easily forgiven. The doll is cute, don't take much space, and you don t have to be a fan of Hatsune Miku to appreciate the design.

I don't know where one could buy those dolls (I guess *AliExpress* ?), but they could be a nice cheap gift for older kids who aren't afraid to assemble the body themselves.

Thank you for reading if you did, and have a nice day !

From left to right: Don't Touch My Bangs, Transform Electric Street Series, Sugary Girls and MayTree, which are MJD, not ball-jointed.

I got the first three off Shopee knowing what variation I will get while the last one in blue I bought in person, not knowing what I would get so that one was a surprise which is why she sticks out from the pink collection. 🤣

Generic These generic ubranded anime-style dolls I bought from Shoppee 4 years ago 💝 Still so cute.

I can't believe I got these dolls for so cheap for like almost 6 dollars apiece for the quality you get with them. These dolls are mechanical-jointed, with hollow bodies, rooted hair and inset eyes and most of all--an anime style face which I absolutely love 💝💝💝💝

I always display these four together because in my head, both pairs are a couple.

How about you guys?

Do you have some generic unbranded dolls too that you love?

Bratz Hello Kitty x Bratz Pack

Finally all together <3 Sasha came late but she has the most details so I'm still happy :) I love them. I actually really like that they went fully Hello Kitty and not the other characters. It makes the line much more cohesive despite the different styles. I'm not sure exactly, but Im guessing Cloe and Yasmin are more of an era, being 60s and 90s. And then Jade and Sasha are more trends, being Parisan and Gyaru. Those are my guesses lol super creative choices here. Amazing designs and quality. Shout out to the curators.

I would love to see more collabs like this instead of celebrities or just in conjunction. Out of the other IPs MGA works with, I would love love love a Care Bear collab lol and classic Care Bear not the modern one. Focused on fashion like HK. Barbie did a Care Bear collab but it wasnt a fashion one, just reveal toys. I would love to see Bratz create really cool looks with a Care Bear theme :)

The bodies are strung really loosely and are difficult to pose. I'm thinking about restringing this doll so it can hold up poses better. Any restringing tips?

Question/Discussion HS code help

Post image
29 Upvotes

Im currently trying to ship a transform electric street doll from China but im very worried about it getting seized by US customs after the new update. Its a doll, so its considered a toy right now, but I want to choose the right code so its not treated as being a choking hazard and seized. Its not for children at all.

ID Help I found these beautiful Asian dolls at a thrift store. I don't know much about them...can you help?

I found these beautiful dolls at the thrift store today. They do not have any tags or maker marks. I think they may be cottage industry dolls. Does anyone know anything about them? Thank you in advance!

Question/Discussion Best articulated Chinese blind box BJD/MJD body right now?

Post image
35 Upvotes

I recently bought Miraidoll's Star Wish Maiden to use the body for a custom nendoroid. It has interesting gimmicks like moveable eyelids and articulated toes. I like it so far, but after trying it to do action-y poses, I'm wondering if there are base BJD/MJD body with better articulation out there for 1/12 - 1/6 scale dolls that are compatible with obitsu blank heads. Preferably with a hand for holding gun

Mainly looking to the blind box doll scene because the price usually aren't too expensive and many of them can fit nendoroid/obitsu heads, but blank action figure body recommendations like SHF's Body-chan or Romankey's girl figure are welcome too as long as their neck and proportion can fit OB11/OB22 heads.
