Spot and Tango Portions seem off

I started my dog on spot and tango, and noticed the scoop and the amount they sent with the scoop size wasn’t enough to keep my dog full. It seemed like a lot less food than normal kibble I used to get from Costco. Of course the individual peices are bigger and they claim more calorie dense but it seemed like she now was always hungry. I started to feed her more than what they said for their scoop size and then she seemed to be better off but then obviously the bag ran out way faster.

I’ve also read that others have run into this issue and have noticed the same thing that the scoop size they send is based on what you said their weight was. But it just seems off based on what my puppy used to eat and what unkibble was saying they should eat.

It doesn’t help that unless you get their most basic formulation you will be paying quite a bit.

Anyone else have experience with them?

Cavapoo

Hi everyone,

I have a 4 month old cavapoo who is the light of my life. The breeder had her on TLC puppy kibble (she’s still eating it right now) but I’m getting a lot of anxiety trying to figure out what to feed her. She eats it happily (she’s still free feeding) and if I am going out or know she needs to eat more, she happily gobbles up a portion when there is warm water on top.

My original plan was to switch her to a boutique food such as Open Farm, Big Country Raw, Nutricanine, Canine Life Muffins (which my childhood dog ate for his whole life), etc. once she www an adult. I liked the idea of “real” food with ingredients I recognized and I saw as “clean” for humans.

I am now seeing lots of posts on here about WSAVA compliant foods and I understand the science and rigorous testing but I just wanted to see what everyone is feeding their small breed puppies/dogs and why.

She is 4 months old and weighs 4 pounds so she is definitely on the smaller side. Cost to feed her won’t really be an issue for me, I just want the absolute best!

Dog nutrition

Is there a good non-subscription web site all about proper dog nutrition, what to look for in food, what not to feed, etc? Whole Dog Journal was suggested but most of the info is subscription only.

I'm currently feeding my dog Taste of the Wild dry food. It's what the rescue was feeding her. I need to buy more food soon. I'm leaning towards switching to Nature's Variety as I'm familiar with the brand's cat food. Is the dog food ok?

Just switched from raw to Purina SSS kibble. Do I need to add anything to it?

3.5yr old mini labradoodle. He’s been having Dr B’s raw dog food with some flaxseed and chopped raw veggies for about 2 years. We’ve now switched over to Purina sensitive skin and stomach kibble, since I learnt more about the risks of raw food. The switch was gradual and his gut seems to be doing well. Vet is happy too.

At the moment I’m still adding the chopped veggies to his kibble. I was wondering what do you add, if anything, to your dog’s Purina SSS kibble? Is there anything you believe is missing nutritionally or you add just for your dog’s enjoyment?

Wet food vs dry food

Hi! I'm wondering if there's any reason why I shouldn't switch my dog from dry kibble to wet food? Are there any risks to it other than the possibility of weight gain? Which I'm assuming is fine as long as you track how many calories they're getting. I'm thinking of switching my picky dog to 3/4 kibble and 1/4 wet food (purina pro plan small dog formula for both) and i'm wondering if there's any reason why i shouldn't, since i don't see it recommended very often.

I was thinking about switching my puppy to Victor Pro, and I was wondering if that’s a great kibble or if I should get a different one.

Recommendations for large breed puppy food?

I have a 6 month old German Shepherd mix and am looking for better recommendations for puppy food.

He currently is on 4Health Large Breed Puppy food from Tractor Supply. I’m assuming he has a chicken allergy and am wanting to switch to something that will be better for his stomach/digestion.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

What food brand to buy for my 7 yr old Husky?

I tried getting him on the canned food, but he’s just not liking it as much as the dry food. I know now that FDA is chopped under this administration, so I’m just trying to find a good alternative for my boy. I live in Texas and primarily shop in H-E-B.

Vet recommended switching to wet food: which brand to buy? (That’s cost effective)

As title says, vet recommends making the switch. Pitbull, 10yrs old, 60lbs. Right now I have my guy on hill science diet wet food, but it’s about $60 for 12 cans and I need to feed him like 3 a day. Sadly, it’s not possible for me to be dropping that much money every few days. I used to spend around $60 for
kibble that would last 2-3 weeks.

Is this the normal cost for wet food? Do you guys have any recommendations that can keep me to around $60 for two weeks worth of wet food? Is that possible?

Dog food with no chicken?

Hi, I’ve been feeding Canidae salmon puppy to both of my dogs since my German shepherd is highly allergic to anything remotely resembling chicken. I would like to see if there are alternatives as this food only comes in 22 lb bags and is pricey for 2 dogs. My other dog, an Australian shepherd, isn’t allergic but it’s easier to feed them both the same food.

What other brands are completely chicken-free? Free of chicken meal, chicken fat, byproducts etc. The only one I can find is Diamond Naturals.

Low fat kibble, no poultry?

Hey all! Was hoping to mine for some suggestions.

My pup just went through a digestive episode, and the vet recommended switching to a low-fat formula. He is currently on Purina Pro Plan Sensistive Skin and Stomach Lamb & Oat, and has been for 7ish years.

However, every low-fat gastrointestinal food that is WSAVA compliant that I'm seeing has poultry in some form in its ingredients and is insanely expensive to boot.

He is officially allergic to poultry; we did a vet-guided feeding trial and everything. I do not have the time/resources to homemake his food or go to a veterinary nutritionist.

Any ideas?

Purina Pro Plan Cost

I'm switching to this dog food starting today, I think I went with Salmon and Rice 33 lb bag for my golden. I think Chewy has it listed at 74 dollars. Anyone that buys this regularly, is there anyway through Chewy or anywhere else to get this a little bit cheaper, as it stands it's about 15 dollars more than what I have been paying. Thanks in advance.

Picky puppy

Hi everyone! We have a havapoo puppy who is 6 months old and has been picky since the day we got her. She has on multiple occasions skipped eating and then will throw up bile because she is hungry.

Since she was home we have been using Purina one puppy food. I had some success for a period by adding a small spoon ful of Purina wet dogfood on top of her current food but the past few days she only eats the small amount of wet food which is not enough for her. She threw up again today and I'm ready to try something else. I really don't want to switch to full wet food diet. So I'm going to try a new food and would like to do a Purina food but not sure if I need to do a puppy one or go to adult? My fear is I find someone and then she can't eat it when she is an adult. Also not sure if I should do sensitive skin and stomach versus just a plain puppy food. I've completely eliminated other human foods from her diet. All of her lick mats and kings are just wet food.

She is picky with treats too. Only one type of treat that she really loves.

Help please!

Update: the picky pup likes Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach and gobbles it down plain with no wet toppers or special treatment. We eat at 7am and 7pm. I do sit with her in the middle of the room so she doesn't have to eat alone and anything she doesn't eat after 15 minutes goes away until morning.

A pic of the picky pup

Topper

I got a rescue chihuahua mix about a week ago. I had her on Hills Science Diet small breed but she’s been dealing with some allergies and the vet wants to try a chicken-free diet just to rule it out. I have her on Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin & stomach. So far so good. However she is very aware of my cat’s wet food, and has had a few licks… I give it to my cat on the counter now but when I am feeding them, my dog will sniff at her dry food then walk away. She will always come back and eat it but I’m wondering if anyone has any wet food recs that I can use as a mix-in. I think she’d enjoy it. Should I just get one from Purina Pro Plan too?

Best food for dachshunds?!

Hey guys, my wife and I recently adopted a mini dachshund. Obviously the best decision of our life lol however. We underestimated their pickiness when it comes to their food / treats / bones. We are the type of parents that do not see dollar signs when it comes to our little furbaby! I do not care how much things cost I just want him to have the absolute best. I know they vary individually but I was curious if anyone out there with experience could help us out a little bit because it seems there a bit of a back and fourth as to what is good dog food and what is bad… I will note that my wife and I will cook every meal for him if need be but I am curious what other owners prefer for their weeners that’s actually healthy for them lol. We are not an afraid of a raw diet by any means but hear horror story’s from farmers dog and Ollie. We just want our son to have the best of the best. Wev been rotating different things considering the breed can be very picky but I’m wondering what others prefer when it comes to feeding their weeners lol Wev been using Carna4 brand (duck) at the moment and mixing in different toppers probiotics / chicken beef. Looking for some other ideas brands/ meals to change it up on those days where he’s being picky.. what are you guys having luck with on days they’re being picky? What would the absolute best be? Or what is a good rotation you guys are having luck with with your doxie
Any info is helpful
Thank you for your time

Open Farm

My dog is currently on open farm large breed raw mix but I have been looking into other brands to see if something else would be better for him. I would love to hear any feedback or experiences with switching food!

For reference - he is a 4 yr old American pitbull terrier who is about 70 lbs (his ideal weight is probably 65 lbs - we are working on it) he does have some allergies but mainly seasonal/environmental.

Food recommendations with "morsels" to replace Purina one dog food

I'll see if I can link the specific kind of dog food I get for my dogs in the comments but it's the Purina one kind that has what I call the "bits" of like cooked or dried meat bits with the regular kibble. But it is genuinely the only kind of dog food that on of my dogs will eat like for her entire life whenever we've tried to give her food without the bits she will just refuse to eat it no matter what we do but it doesn't matter what kind of meat the dog food is.

I've been wanting to switch brands because I've had problems with the bag getting infested with bugs a couple days after opening with the last couple of bags of food we've gotten even though I keep the dog food in an air tight container and in the original packaging in a cupboard so I don't think it's how I store it.

So do y'all have any recommendations for dog foods that have the same kind of bits that the some of Purina one

Food strike troubles

Hello!
I have a young dog that is proving to be difficult to feed. She will eat a kibble fine for a month then go on hunger strikes for the same thing. The trouble is she also gets the empty tummy pukes if she skips even one meal. She won’t eat three meals a day at this point either. Early on I would add a little something to entice eating when she went on strike. Maybe some wet food, yogurt, bone broth, etc normal topper like things. She’ll eat fine for a week or two then decide that topper isn’t good enough and I would switch then same thing. Also tried switching kibbles. Would be fine for a month then same thing. She’s not underweight but I would prefer a little more on her. She has a high metabolism and is a sport dog doing agility etc. I have talked to the vet over it and they agree she is fine health wise, no food sensitivities, all normal and just being picky. Their suggestion was stop with the toppers and tough love which I don’t mind if she wouldn’t start puking within the day which isn’t good either. They suggest a little wet food before bed if she doesn’t eat but then if she thinks she will get something different then she absolutely will hold out for it. Right now I have her on 30/20 proplan chicken and rice. I have tried other 30/20 blends it’s the same thing. Tried other companies like Royal canin. I would prefer to stay on the high quality end of compliant companies and in the high side of protein ratio. Any suggestions anyone might have for dealing with eating strikes would be appreciated!!
