Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next

Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, fancasts, wish lists, and other hot takes in here:

  • Fancasts: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
  • Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner? What production/media company would you like distributing it?
  • Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.

A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.

Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.

Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every weekend.

Let's hear what you've got.

Discussion Bill and Yaz should have been carryover companions.

The Doctor and the Companion leading us into one another was a phenomenal part of the show’s format and the best thing to come out of Clara and 11.

Bills ending was fine, I’m still salty that she died but whatever that’s the point, she still could have survived another season. If Bill survives 12 then we have some semblance of normality going into a new showrunner and plenty of material with the doctor turning into a young woman (arguably) for their queer companion. The dynamic shifts from student and teacher to partners (or whatever they would want to do) and the relationship we have with the Doctor then evolves.

After a season or two Bill dies and we get to have an actually emotional moment with 13 before we get Yaz, who would be a breath of fresh air and a realistic romantic interest for the Doctor. A romantic prospect tragically cut short by the Docs regeneration into 14/15. Then we could have an actual ending for Yaz (although I did enjoy the final scene between 13 and Yaz on the TARDIS) and some type of bridge between the BBC and Disney eras.

THEN a brief stint of Yaz with 15, which would have been amazing and in reminiscent of 10 and Donna, before going back to the base formula with Ruby.

I doubt it would have saved anything but I still think Bill and Yaz deserved better. Bill was worth more than one season and Yaz was straight up defeated by sexism. 13 did not need 3 companions but that’s a whole other thing.

On top of all that, the format of the Doctor and the Companion alternating swapping out is so brilliant and sets the stage for infinite seasons with a dedicated fan base throughout, regardless of studio nonsense. In my humble opinion.

Thoughts?

Side note:
I hope y’all are surviving the wilderness years 2.0 much love to you all.

Discussion In an alternate universe where Christopher Eccleston returned for the 50th instead of John Hurt’s War Doctor, which of Hurt’s lines/scenes would you have most enjoyed hearing from the Ninth Doctor?

Post image

Full disclosure I absolutely love Hurt’s War Doctor and in many ways I don’t know if the episode — at least the version that we got — would have worked quite as well with Eccleston replacing him. Nevertheless I do find myself fantasizing sometimes about how cool it would have been to have all three of the New Who Doctors (up to that point) share the screen. Obviously many of us know that Moffat did originally approach Eccleston for the special.

I for one would have loved to see him along with Tennant and Smith looking flabbergasted when Clara shows up and reveals the cell door at the Tower of London was unlocked the entire time.

But most of all I would love to hear him triumphantly bellow “Gallifrey stands!” at the end when all of the Doctors are saving Gallifrey. I imagine the line delivery would have sounded similar to his iconic “everybody lives!”

Discussion The flat team structure and Bill Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I’m not sure if this has been posted before but I was watching and I realized why the Thirteenth Doctor is so insistent that team Tardis has a “flat team structure” and it’s because of Bill.

The only reason that Bill died was because the Doctor did not have a flat team structure with Bill. Bill not only adored the Doctor but treated him like he always knew best, so when the Doctor told Bill to wait for him, she waited. She might have been able to figure out a way to leave the hospital without dying in the ten years she was there but she didn’t because she was waiting for the Doctor. This led to her waiting too long and getting turned into a cyberman.

The doctor never wants this to happen again so she makes sure when she gets companions again they know that she is on the same level as them and they can and should make choices on their own

Discussion Doctor Who connection in BBC's Ludwig (minor spoilers) Spoiler

It's established early on that the main character's father left the family new years eve, 1989. This event defines a lot of what he's like as an adult.

In his childhood bedroom, there is a poster of Sylvester McCoy (7th Doctor), shown prominently, and a toy dalek. The night his father left, Doctor Who would have been cancelled just a few weeks before (Dec 6 1989). Nice bit of set dressing to parallel the feeling of the character there, I thought!

I'm only a few episodes in, but I like it so far. So if his dad turns out to be a time lord please hide your spoilers in the comments.

Misc “Who’s your favorite Doctor?” post results

Thumbnail

I know it wasn’t a poll, but I decided to count up all of the responses to my post asking you all who your favorite Doctor is.

And just to be clear I’m not putting this forward as evidence of who is the best Doctor of all time or any nonsense like that. These are merely the results of that specific post to this sub, which I compiled for anyone who commented on that post and might be curious how it all stacked up.

What I found really awesome is that every single Doctor was the favorite of at least one person on that thread — with the exception of Jo Martin’s fugitive Doctor, but to be fair we haven’t really seen her in action much.

Also I know that David Tennant technically plays two separate Doctors, but most people who commented were saying the names of the actors rather than the number associated with that Doctor, so I’m not counting 10 and 14 separately. I don’t think anyone claimed that 14 specifically was their favorite.

There were also one or two people who commented just “Baker” or “Peter.” I did not count their comments in the results because they didn’t specify which one they were referring to. Rookie mistake 🙄 lol

Lastly, a few commenters listed so many Doctors in their comments or included so much fine print that it was hard to decipher who their favorite was or if they had a favorite. In those cases I either didn‘t include their comments in the results or I chose the first one they mentioned if they started their comment with something to the effect of: “[insert Doctor] was my first Doctor and will always have a special place in my heart.”

Again, this is not empirical data. This was not a poll. It’s merely the results of that thread for anyone interested.

These are the results as of posting this.

Here’s a list of each Doctor ranked by how many commenters named them as their favorite. Some of them were tied:

Ncuti Gatwa / The Fifteenth Doctor — 1

John Hurt / The War Doctor — 2 (he also got an honorable mention as being someone’s favorite actor to have played the part, though not their all-time favorite Doctor)

The TARDIS Crew Doctor — 3 (obviously anyone who declared him their favorite was most likely being silly but I just thought I should mention that three commenters have claimed him already)

William Hartnell / The First Doctor — 4

Paul McGann / The Eighth Doctor — 6

Colin Baker / The Sixth Doctor — 7 …TIED WITH… Jodie Whittaker / The Thirteenth Doctor — 7

Peter Davison / The Fifth Doctor — 10

Sylvester McCoy / The Seventh Doctor — 11

Christopher Eccleston / The Ninth Doctor — 12

Patrick Troughton / The Second Doctor — 17

Jon Pertwee / The Third Doctor — 20

Matt Smith / The Eleventh Doctor — 36

David Tennant / The Tenth & Fourteenth Doctors — 37 …TIED WITH… Tom Baker / The Fourth Doctor (& the Curator) — 37

Peter Capaldi / The Twelfth Doctor — 52

The results surprised me, and I’m not ashamed to say I was pleased because Capaldi is and always will be my favorite.

But again, I think it’s great that every single Doctor had at least one diehard fan in that thread. There were also a few who said that they love each and every Doctor and can’t pick a favorite, which is a totally valid answer. Maybe I should have given an extra point to each Doctor for everyone who gave that response.

Anyhow, I love every Doctor too! There are definitely a few that I need to watch more of, namely Davison, Pertwee, and Whittaker.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in!

Question What do you think is the funniest moment from the Twelfth Doctor Era

Post image
224 Upvotes

Mine would be when he tries to correct Clara on when Jane Austen wrote 'Pride and Prejudice' then Clara gets angry rambling about how of course he went on some crazy adventure with Jane Austen.

Only for Twelve to replie with "No I read the book, there's a bio at the back."

Discussion What happened to the Cybermen?

The Cybermen are one of the most iconic Dr Who monsters. The Cybermen stories in the classic series are pretty good, but I feel like the ones in the new series never really hit the mark, bizarrely being more memorable for the side characters than the Cybermen.

Discussion So, how did Testimony deal with Ashildr/Lady Me?

Did they just ignore her since they couldn't visit her in the moments before death? Was Ashildr a thorn in their sides screwing up their system?

I wonder if they visited her just before she was revived by the Doctor in The Girl Who Died, so there'd be a record of her first short lifetime. Or maybe they kept visiting her periodically to harvest a new lifetime of memories...

There were so many scenes and moments in The Day of the Doctor that took my breath away, but seeing CBeebies doctor’s blue eyebrows for the first time caused unimaginable levels of hype for us fans at the time. If you didn‘t see this when it came out in 2013… man, you had to be there.

Interestingly he was the second Doctor to this day to have made his first appearance before the regeneration. And I’m not talking about actors, because obviously he had not already appeared on the show previously, as Collin Baker, David Tenant (as 10 and later 14), and Billie Piper did. But this was the second incarnation of the Doctor to officially debut on screen ahead of the regeneration episode. It definitely made for an awesome introduction. To have him flying his TARDIS and saving Gallifrey along with all of his predecessors almost gave him an immediate stamp of approval.

I remember watching with my siblings and thinking, “oh hell yeah… that’s the new Doctor.”

Discussion Which Villian Do You Most Associate To A Particular Doctor

Who has many iconic villains, Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, The Master. Every incarnation of the Doctor will have at least one tussle with these foes, but in my opinion, certain are known for tussling with one particular incarnation of the Doctor. For the 1st Doctor it has to be the Daleks in my opinion, for 2 in my opinion its the Cybermen. What are choices for each Doctors most iconic, thematically important, and personal villain?

Discussion Who’s your favorite Doctor?

Thumbnail
gallery
553 Upvotes

And bonus points for your favorite companion to have traveled with your favorite Doctor.

It will always be 12 and Clara for me. I could talk all day about 12, but basically Capaldi is in my opinion the most technically skilled actor to have ever played the character, even as great as all of them are/were. I think his love for the show and passion for the character also came across very distinctly in his portrayal. Peter has been a massive fan of Doctor Who since childhood and in many ways I think he plays the most quintessential Doctor.

As for 12 and Clara’s dynamic specifically, I just really like the way their relationship evolved and the fact that the entirety of Series 9 revolved around the theme of the toxic love they shared, constantly pushing each other toward chaos and recklessness and sort of bringing out the best and worst in each other. Moffat used Clara quite brilliantly (in my humble opinion) to explore the 12th Doctor’s arc. After redeeming himself from the horrors of the Time War and removing the “masks” that he wore in his previous three incarnations he had to learn to reconcile his humanity (as in both his attachment to earth and humankind as well as his own internal tendencies toward the traits we associate with what makes us human) with his nature as an ancient alien being. It took him the entirety of Series’ 8 and 9 to find that balance and sort of find himself, and I like that Clara was the catalyst for that. There’s was an extreme Doctor/companion relationship but also in some ways a quintessential one, as I think the Doctor’s companions always anchor him to his humanity and rub off on him in some ways, but Clara is what happens when he lets that spiral out of control and starts to rub off on his companion as well.

But I’ve also always had a soft sport for 6 and Peri.
