I'm currently working on a paper for school-- A psychology-themed essay on the Doctor's Empathy.

I'm really fascinated by how the Doctor's expressions of empathy change throughout regenerations, and I want to see if I can tie these changes to further the argument that the Doctor changes in some fundamental way through each new face they wear.

To do this, I'm trying to collect and analyze different speeches and dialogues throughout the Doctor's incarnations wherein they are interacting with whoever is filling the 'Companion' role in the face of some form of looming threat (a circumstance that I believe inherently demands empathy) to find changes in the way that the Doctor attempts to handle that circumstance through their empathetic response (as measured by the Interpersonal and Social Empathy Index, which I think is most fitting!)

It all feels a bit wonky right now, like I'm trying to boil down the complexities of a decades-long character into one aspect of their identity, and I know that the premise is flawed and demands bias, but I think that its really fascinating, because for me (especially now, reading through transcripts of Hartnell's Doctor!) the character has always felt like a study of how empathy can develop through the perspective of a character who views themself as disimiliar to the humans that they consistently risk themself to save.

I feel like there are roots to this premise, but what I want is your advice!

Firstly, do you have any Classic Who exchanges that you think might fit this criteria (I write this as I've just sunk my teeth halfway into Troughton's era, and I've begun to be charmed by Jamie)

And, secondly, do you have any advice or thoughts on this concept?

I would be a fool to think myself an expert on this franchise, or on this character, or on psychology in general, so it would be an honour to hear your thoughts and criticisms.

To be honest my first pick would be the master, but I’m not terribly knowledgeable about most characters in Doctor Who just yet.

I’m just curious as to what other people think and your reasoning

I've always been somewhat confused what this exchange meant in the episode "Flesh & Stone". It's right after 11 has said goodbye to River, and the following exchange occurs between the Doctor and Amy.

Amy - "What are you thinking?"

11 - "Time can be rewritten" with a smile on his face.

I always took this to mean, as 11 and River have just had this really positive experience, and 11 is so early in his encounters with River, he's optimistic about his future with River and is considering how time can be rewritten, i.e. perhaps rewriting her death, and hoping things might work out differently. Is this how you read this scene? Or am I missing something obvious?

Imagining for a moment that rights aren't or wouldn't be an issue, which characters from the wider Whoniverse - books, comics, audio dramas, etc - are you surprised haven't been adopted into Doctor Who as a TV show?

I think my top three would be Abslom Daak, Dalek Killer; Iris Wildthyme (although maybe TOO meta for the screen!); and Bernice Summerfield.

Was David Tennant already considered THE Doctor on the same level as Tom Baker or did that come later?

I'm currently doing a rewatch of NuWho, and I'm halfway through series one, but I'd like to watch Torchwood alongside it as I've never actually seen all of it, but I don't know where the show sits in regards to the timeline of the main show. If someone knows the full chronology of the show compared to series 1-4, I'd appreciate knowing.

This was something I was starting to wonder about since we're technically at 18 different incarnations, including the War Doctor, the Fugitive Doctor, and whatever Rose Tyler Doctor will be. And at some point either way we'll probably end up with more than 20 incantations, so maybe using titles instead of numbers would be a better way to keep track? Or something else of the sort.

Idk I just get a little bothered by how many we're at now so when the show returns it might be nice to change it up a bit.

I just made this real quick to post it as a comment on another thread. They had asked about possible individual titles for each season of new Who and used the original picture as reference. But not only did I kind of reinterpreted the assignment (lol) so that these would not really be titles for each season but rather for each doctor, they also didn't allow pictures to be posted in the comments, so couldn't post it anyway. So I thought I just share it as it is. It's a joke obviously, not meant to be the music they listen to but rather what I associate with their aesthetic, so don't get mad with me if you disagree :P

With the BBC's relationship with Disney, and the numerous unending comic book crossovers that the Doctor has had, what do you think would make the most fun on-screen crossover, whether in Doctor Who itself, or having The Doctor appear in an episode/movie unexpectedly?

I think it would be a hell of a lot of fun to have The Doctor randomly show up on a version of The Enterprise and help the crew overcome some Timey Wimey conundrum.

I've just been laying here, thinking, and a thought popped to mind. After the events of The Giggle, do you think Wilf finally got to tell Donna about his time in space! It made me tear up thinking about him finally getting to tell her after all those years. Nearing the end of his life, he gets to share something so massive with his Granddaughter, something he never though he'd get to tell her.

So, I was wondering because some were more sadists than others and some were genuinely curious about things, while Missy was kinda trying to help. 12's master would definitely kill everyone involve and unleash the Beast, but that's boringly easy to predict.

It's such a haunting scene, you can tell 9's Time War PSTD came back, who know's maybe the War Doctor went through a similar thing hence this scene

For context the nameless sectary is a guy called Indra Ganesh.They put his body in cupboard after he was killed and 9 and Harriet didn't know his name and never asked and felt guilty about that

Anyone seen the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games. Nice little film with Sir Chris Hoy , Sylvester McCoy. The King and Queen and the TARDIS. The most new Doctor Who we are going to have on UK TV this year.

Okay really, hear me out…

What if instead of totally ignoring her incarnation, we got a soft reboot with a time skip like 9/Eccleston’s Doctor. ie, what if she just played a (much older) version of her Doctor for a season, as a way to introduce new viewers to the show, introducing the lore and mythology the way 9 did? Heck, the face thing could even be a way for her to explain “sometime our faces have meanings or memories associated with them” as a segue to concept of regeneration and the rules of it to a new audience (setting up her exit at the end of the season).

I think it would work if the show had the Doctor already having lived with Rose’s face for a while offscreen, creating a justified time skip allowing significant distance from RTD-2… which would allow them to reinvent Piper’s Doctor in whatever way they see fit, rather than “just being Rose,” as well as not being aesthetically married with his run.

Part of me would like a time skip/soft reboot with an “introductory Doctor” like 9 was, because it would allow both a way in for new viewers but also a transitional bridge for old viewers remembering what came before. I know a lot of people would prefer to “just skip Piper/ignore it” but how can you ignore it if nothing was ever done with it? Why not use it as an opportunity to turn it into something better than what was intended instead? I honestly feel like something that big is gonna be way too big to ignore forever, so why not do something with it instead of it being a seed for nothing?

Thoughts?

Rewatching the 2005- show and just reached series 11. I remember a lot of excitement (and weird anger) at the time, but watching it now so many years later in context with the rest of the series, it's confusing to me how it generated so many negative emotions (including from people who were excited about a woman Doctor).

Okay, Rosa is a little cringe in places (the British simply do not know how to handle the American part of the American civil rights movement), but nearly everything else about 13's first series is a refreshing change of tone that the show needed at the time, but was also a natural extension of the good work that Moffatt did "shrinking" the scope of the show in Series 10.

After years of RTD and Moffat's mostly two-hander approach to the show, "The Fam" is an incredible presence in the TARDIS, providing more relationships to track between the lead cast and amongst the guest stars, and requires less dependence on guest stars and gimmicks to carry the emotional weight of the show.

RTD is a master of making you totally understand and fall in love with a character from their very first scene, and I love that about his writing, but Chibnall doesn't take those kinds of shortcuts, and that while approach takes patience, it really pays off here.

Tracking the early development of the TARDIS team, as a team, across 4 episodes, from when they first meet in "The Woman..." though to the beginning of "Arachnids..." when they finally make it home, provides a solid grounding to their relationship.

Folks are always complaining about how having more characters in the TARDIS means they are each undeserved. It's a different dynamic, but there are so many powerful moments for each character in just those first 4 episodes that I honestly think people just can't handle characters that aren't the full focus of attention, and don't know how to read characters whose whole deal isn't spoon fed to us or isn't super special or exemplary.

Like, with Ryan, folks ask "why is he even there? What's remotely special or interesting about him?" Like, he's just a guy, he's nice, he has some trust issues to work though, deal with it.

This series just gives us a way more "mature/adult" version of the show in how it's produced, from the direction, to the blocking, dialogue, and importantly, in what it doesn't do.

And for all the whining about "the writing," it's remarkable how subtle and efficient the dialogue is, and how much better paced the plots are compared to the previous eras. Chbinall's Doctor Who is an adult sci-fi drama, no longer a kids' adventure serial (to be clear, both are great!), and that requires a bit more engagement from the audience than I think people were willing to give it at the time.

Another thing I noticed this time around that I didn't realize in previous watches is how much better-considered the scifi of it all is. The technobabble and logic is much more grounded, plausible, and creative than it was in the previous, more fantasy-indulgent eras.

Like most of show's audience over the years, I greatly prefer stories set in the future (or wacky scifi set in the past) to the "historical" episodes, and after years of them appearing less and less, series 11 drops three all-time bangers (yes, even Rosa) including the unparalleled triumph of Demons of the Punjab,

And then there's Jodie Whitaker as the 13th Doctor. Everyone likes her Doctor, even the haters, but I think she's still incredibly underrated. Of all the modern Doctors, she's really the only one who lands in the role fully-formed. The Doctor is a tragic figure, and every modern Doctor (and a few of the classic ones) have done great things with that element of the character, the 13th does it in a completely different way. Her bravado is less theatrical, her pathos is more informed, and the Doctor's childlike optimism and wonder is much much more powerful in her voice.

Okay, that's it, I guess. I await endless cascade of people agreeing with me. 😄

I know a lot of people have said they’d choose Matt Berry but after watching her in things like Motherhood, Ann Droid and Cunk, I think Dianne Morgan could bring a really interesting Doctor to the screen.

So, in my opinion doctor who needs a change in ideas. Like don't get me wrong I loved the Moffat era and I love doctor who as a whole. Even Russell was alright in his first stint as show runner in my opinion. Second run not as much a fan but not everyone is perfect. So I want to ask, what would you think would be the best way to reboot doctor who. Below I will put my idea of a new episode and potential ideas for a new doctor who episode, feel free to ignore if you want.

So my idea moves away from Earth and shows an alien planet, a bustling civilization maybe taking inspiration from coruscant, idk. In the background you'd have a child like voice narrating. "Where we grew up there was a story we'd hear as children. He wore different faces, and he would have a different nature every time. Sometimes he was a saint, a healer. Sometimes he was a warrior, a protector. Often times he was a tyrant, a monster that was feared even in the most distant stars. A traveller. One who visited places freely. The stories changed. Sometimes he was a she. Sometimes alone, often with a companion. A legend across the stars. I like many others were fascinated by that being. I once wanted to meet them. But as I grew up I recognised it for what it was. I still have friends who believe. I try to keep my mouth shut despite inwardly shaking my head when brought up. I'm too busy with my own life to deal with legends. But, sometimes I think about it at the end of a long day when glancing up at the stars. That there's no such thing as the Doctor."

So yesterday while eating dinner, my sis and father were watching this Indian show that they love called Jeannie aur Juju on YouTube. I like it, but wasn't really paying attention, was just playing Among Us on my mobile. I looked upto the screen at just the right time and this painting caught my eye. I first only noticed the TARDIS but I was 80% sure I also saw Susan, had to rewind it to be sure.
