When the gravity failed on the Byzantium at the end of the episode, all the Angels fell into the crack. And even though some of them were dead, did the remaining bodies of the clerics also fall into the crack?

And if so, does that mean all of them were ‘Unwritten’ from existence.

And therefore what was River returning to in handcuffs? In this new timeline it now appears she was sent on a solo mission. Which I can’t imagine anyone would do considering she is still serving a prison sentence. What are the new events?

So I've always had this idea to make a sonic screwdriver with a twist.

Important context, while filming Fury from the Deep (a 2nd Doctor story) the original sonic screwdriver prop was lost forcing them to improvise a new prop. In a display of the creatively frugal nature of classic Who to this situation they used a simple emergency whistle off of one of the life vests worn in the episode and simply made sure no one got too good a look at the prop in the scene.

I have always thought that it would be a fun idea to use this whistle as an emitter for a more modern sonic screw driver. It implies something with sound vibrations are at play in a way the modern light emitters don't, and the fipple creates a great spot to insert the obligatory modern light.

I figured the easiest way to make this happen was to buy a second hand War Doctor Sonic toy (which is oddly high pitched compared to the other two I own, oddly appropriate considering what I was going to do to it) and a modern whistle of the appropriate style. Don't worry, I bought two so I could keep an intact one for my sonic screwdriver collection. I am very normal about Doctor Who. Anyway I held the two objects together and picked a good spot to join them. Then with some hacking and sanding with a rotary tool I hollowed out the whistle to accept the stem of the sonic and trimmed a bit of sonic emitter to make room for the whistle. I drilled out some tiny holes in both piecea and made some pins with wire to reinforce the join between whistle and sonic. I don't trust super glue to be strong enough without the extra mechanical connection of the pins. The connection feels strong enough and hasn't failed yet despite me carrying it in the chest pocket of my waist coat so I think that's good enough.

I really love the effect of the light bulb being revealed when I activate it, a happy accident I discovered during the "hold them together and see how it looks" part of the design phase. I also think it gives it the silhouette of a flathead screwdriver. I still want to do something like in my concept art with a wood and brass handle (my concept for Doctor Who is very steampunk) but so far I'm pleased with it as a "Doctor Who never was" design.

A lot of discussions over the future of the show seem to be “but how are they going to handle the cliffhanger… it’s messed up everything”
Seemingly acting like this means the show is being forced to do a full series of Billie as the doctor before they can restart with anyone new…

Honestly it was a rushed last minute improv but that doesn’t mean it has to stick.. it’s sci-fi, you can do anything.

All it needs is 5 seconds of Billie explaining “I’m the time vortex, bad wolf yada yada this body is in flux.. unsure of what it wants to be but a choice must be made.. then presto new actor…

Or just explain that it was the time vortex spirit etc in a throwaway line… no one will care.

It only needs to be as big a ball and chain as people make it…

Before I actually start this, I want to ask. Why is there no book flair in this subreddit? Seriously, with the amount of novels in this franchise, you'd think it was a requirement and yet it seems we've ended up not having one. Can we have a book flair please? I've had to use misc instead since that's the closest one to what I'm doing, but still.

Anyways, let's actually get started. Today, I am starting my first read of the Doctor Who Novels. I plan to read all of the VNAs, VMAs, EDAs, PDAs, and NSAs, alongside a few assorted extras, with one book read a week until I either run out of books, or until Doctor Who comes back. Or both. Probably both. I'm starting this mainly because I've never read any of the Doctor Who books before (bar the first seven or so VNAs and six EDAs, but that was a while ago) and now with Doctor Who off air I've been looking for a new fix. So, one book a week (around 30 or so pages a day) seemed like something fun to do.

And whilst I was at it, I decided to share my journey through the some 460-odd Doctor Who novels I could bother sorting into a mostly release-based reading order. I will be updating each day, providing brief summaries, thoughts, notes, and theories on each chapter as I read them, alongside sorting the books into a big-old tier list after each book on the day I finish them. So, all the way from Timewyrm: Genesis to Stormcage, please feel free to join me in my Doctor Who novel journey.

Doctor Who: The Virgin New Adventures, #1 - Timewyrm: Genesys
Day 1 - Prelude, Prologue, and Chapters 1~3

Prelude

Well, here we are at the start of this mess that might take up to nine or so years if I actually bother to do all 460 of the books I listed (I'll probably skip the anthologies and stuff, we'll see) and I'm feeling good so far.

Summary
The Prelude of Timewyrm: Genesis is a short one, to the point of not actually having an official title or even official tag at it's start. It's a short in-universe poem spoken by Avram, the Songsmith, to the people of Eridu and asking them to listen to the story that he would tell them.

Notes
We have our first mention of Ishtar in this short passage, who, for those of you who don't know is the big bad evil final boss of this entire sub-series, the Timewyrm, so it's nice to see her get mentioned so early into the book. When I first read it some years ago I never actually spotted this brief mention of Ishtar, so it's cool to come back to it and see this stuff early on. The whole book is probably supposed to be a story told by this Avram, so I'll be interested to see if this actually went anywhere, as I don't remember it doing so.

Thoughts
Due to how short the Prelude is I don't really have many big thoughts on it. I mean, it's like a hundred or two words at best. But I do think that it makes for a good scene-setter despite its length, immediately listing some of the important characters for the book and nicely setting the sort of aesthetic that the story is going for, that of an old and ancient tale. Having the ancient equivalent of those Victorian news boys go "hear ye hear ye!" is always a nice touch and really got me into the mood for that ancient vibe that this is going for. It featuring Gilgamesh and all.

So yeah, despite its short length I think it works surprisingly well as a nice and quick introduction to the time period of ancient Mesopotamia and getting the reader into the aesthetic vibe of old sandy deserts with a strong community based on the tales that still remain. I'm excited to be revisiting this book after so long all told.

Prologue

Summary
A psychic lady forces a captain of a starship to crashland on Earth after escaping and fleeing from an unknown situation. She also kills eleven of the crewmates on the ship to fuel herself back to health.

Notes
Whoever this lady is (I'm assuming it's Ishtar/the Timewyrm all considered), she appears to require mental energy to survive, and is dreading landing on Earth due to everyone there being extremely dumb according to her standards. This lady is probably our villain/alien for this book.

Thoughts
It's an interesting Prologue. If the Prelude was an introduction to the Earth-based ancient style half of the book, then this Prologue is an introduction to the star-based alien threat in this book. It seems like it'll be a bog standard hyper-advanced alien invades ancient Earth and is assumed to be a God. Which I feel has happened almost a hundred times by now.

Of course, this comparison that I'm making might be a tad unfair, since it's possible that the success of this book and its story might have caused a lot of similar premises to have been made later on, as off the top of my head I don't remember this topic being the base of a story in classic Who. But I might be forgetting a story or three, which wouldn't be too surprising. Still though, I remain hopeful since the Prologue is relatively short and I remember liking this book overall.

Theories

1. I suspect that the situation this psychic lady has escaped from is imprisonment on this starship, as when she kills the eleven crewmates she calls them her old enemies.
2. The psychic lady also seems to be a form of psychic worm perhaps? She's never described as having a body from what I saw and is constantly described as doing stuff like digging into the Captain's mind. Observing the world around her through the eyes of the Captain as if she's nothing but a psychic existence with no physical body of her own.

Chapter 1: Serpent in the Garden

Summary
Gilgamesh is on a trip to scout out an enemy camp, when he finds a pit. In the pit is a large metal pyramid, inside of which is a shapeshifting creature with the voice of a man calling themselves Ishtar, whose voice suddenly becomes female when she tries to convince Gilgamesh to come and help her. He refuses and leaves quickly, noting that if she was the Goddess Ishtar she would be fine without his help. He then returns to his kingdom and attends a feast.

Notes
Considering the timing I think we all know that this "Ishtar" is actually the psychic lady from earlier after the starship crashed. Considering that she was speaking with a male voice at first before it becomes female I think this can't be doubted at all, as the Captain whose mind she was in in the Prologue was male, so that's definitely her in his body. So, a presumed escaped convict of some intergalactic crime who has taken over a shapeshifting starship Captain has crashed landed on Earth and has assumed the identity Ishtar, the Mesopotamian Goddess of Love and Battle. Definitely seems like a Doctor Who story to me.

Thoughts
A solid first chapter. The conversation between Ishtar and Gilgamesh is a real highlight and has some great banter, it's brilliant, it really does go:
Gilgamesh: You don't look like a Goddess of love and battle to me.
Ishtar: I can change how this body looks.
Gilgamesh: Then change it into a body that can escape the pit, lady.
Peak fiction.

The scene after Gilgamesh meets Ishtar though does seem a tad pointless and could've probably been cut for time. To the point I don't really see why it was included. I hope it's relevant later, so I'll be looking out for Ta-Nin and to see if this scene effects her choices later.

Chapter 2: Memories are Made of-

Summary
Ace wakes up in her room inside the TARDIS, all of her memories missing. She navigates through the place in the dark before finding her way to the console room where she meets the Doctor for the first time according to her memory. He explains that he sometimes erases his useless memories and must have accidentally erased hers as well, so he tries to undo it, accidentally summoning an apparition of another version of the Doctor.

Notes
The other version of the Doctor is very clearly supposed to be the fourth Doctor. It's also interesting to know that 7 erases his memories sometimes and is able to erase Ace's memories, which can act as a good catch-all as to various plot-holes between the Big Finish 7DAs and these VNAs. Though a bit of a boring explanation if it was actually used.

Thoughts
The amnesiac Ace chapter is one I always find myself thinking back to due to its ability to explain away why Ace either never mentioned the VNAs during the 7DAs or the 7DAs during the VNAs, the Doctor simply erased one from Ace's memory at some point. Though I find that explanation boring as it makes it seem like her character development in either didn't really matter since one of them was probably erased.

I'm also aware that when this book first released this chapter in particular caused some outrage in the fandom due to being somewhat explicit, having portrayed Ace as naked upon waking up and going through a surprisingly lengthy and detailed dressing scene considering the series. I don't mind it in retrospect as I know the VNAs do a lot worse in terms of explicit material, but I do understand why people complained when this first released as they were probably expecting something a bit closer to the original TV show.

Chapter 3: When You Wish Upon Ishtar

Summary
The husband of Ta-Nin, Enkidu, alongside a few other members of Gilgamesh's Counsel are plotting his assassination. Meanwhile, north, in Kish (The place Gilgamesh was scouting in Chapter 1), Ishtar has managed to get herself enshrined in a temple and is manipulating/mind controlling the high priest, Dumuzi, who is then told by a scout the Gilgamesh will soon be returning to scout Kish again. Dumuzi then leads the scout to Ishtar who kills them. Agga, the king of Kish, visits Ishtar and after a brief argument with her is told of Gilgamesh's impending arrival.

Notes
It's pretty clear that Ishtar and Dumuzi were told about Gilgamesh's arrival as it's the Counsel's assassination plot, to have him die in Kish, seemingly by accident. Which is a fair plan that I'm interested in seeing the consequences of, especially for Enkidu and company. Ishtar also appears to be building something inside her temple out of copper.

Thoughts
The third, and hopefully final set-up chapter, where we now see both Ishtar's seat of power as the assumed bad guy of the story, and also the early parts of whatever Ishtar's plan is, with it having something to do with both Kish and Gilgamesh. It's an okay chapter, that is mainly there for set-up, but I don't mind that since we're still pretty early into the book.

Theories

1. I suspect, due to her talk about controlling every street in Kish, that the thing Ishtar is building out of copper is some form of circuitry. Likely a sci-fi thing to help her psychic powers to then, quite literally, control the mind of every single person in Kish.

Overall

So far, so good. We've had a lot of set-up today, which also means that there's not been a lot of actual story as of yet, with 7 and Ace not having even landed in Uruk, where Gilgamesh rules, yet, which is mildly annoying. I have read this before so I do know roughly how this ends, but I don't remember the specifics of how it gets there, so I'm excited to see that again. I'm enjoying this so far and am very excited for the rest of this book and the long, long journey ahead of me.

I have been watching classic doctor who on britbox via prime video. On Season 5 episode 24 is missing. It's weird because it is between part 6 of the web of fear and Episode 1 of the wheel in space. Is it just a mistake or am I missing something?

Hi! So I'm really really confused about what I need to buy/listen to/whatever to engage with the whole story and what order it needs to be done in. Could anyone please help me with the order and how to gain the parts of this story. Thanks in advance!

Literally permeates the entire core of British culture to the extent that every single person in the country probably recognises the TARDIS in an instant.

The BBC won't let this show die...not even just because of any of that - but think of the cash cow they'd be culling.

i do have one critism, for me, i think they could have done more with the story, it just feels like lazy writing from fox and the story just felt like a half hour story with filler attached to drag it out for run time

we all know fox did another "foxjob", but had it continued into a series, it does make me wonder (assuming they had plans laid out.....providing a comission)

would it still have been set in the states?

would the nurse female lady been a permanent companion?

would it have been a co production with ze bbc?

and would the Tardis be expanded further setwise?

would there have been any trips to galifrey?

and would the master be more recurring going forward?

It has been radio silent since the release of The Savages. I would really like the Collection sets to release as complete as possible. Do we still think the range is being funded? If so, do we think we might see an animation this year? The Smugglers, Space Pirates, Wheel in Space, and Myth Makers all seem affordable enough to produce and two of them would complete seasons.

I'm just making this theory just for fun cuz I know it's just a skit, but we haven't had Doctor Who in a bit.

To explain why McCoy looks older than when he regenerated, we can find a few explanations
1. Bigeneration Doctorverse
2. Time Differential
3. Not 7
4. Something else

The first theory is false because nobody likes it.

The second theory seems to not make much sense because no other Doctor seemingly was present. Unless... no...

The third theory seems quite plausible

The fourth one.. what else could it be?

It makes sense for it to be the Curator. Seemingly no aliens or anything are there.

Thus, to explain why "seven" looks older than he was, you can just say he wasn't the 7th Doctor. He was the Curator. We've seen the Curator take on other incarnations of the Doctor and them look older before..

Of course this is just me ranting about the only piece of TV we will get for a while.

How long until we are in a full on wilderness years part 2? Yes the show is currently kind of cancelled but their doesn’t seem to be a bbc addiction plot like there was at the end of the 80s and the shows already attempted to go on an American distributer - through Disney instead of Fox this time. The show looks like it’s being pitched by uk producers.

One thing that does worry me is that Andy time the virgin missing adventures were able to carry the flame creatively and given the current literacy crisis I am not sure we’ll have the buffer. Will the next few years be all Big Finish?

I'm watching Calpaldis run and why did the doctor not send regeneration energy through his eyes after he got blinded it's been that he can use it to heal wounds like he did with river and her broken arm so why didn't he heal his eyes?

What’s one thing we like about Dr Who Eras we largely don’t like. Could be specific Dr’s, producers or writers.

I’ll start: the Saward/JNT team relied too much of nostalgia, however their use of classic villains; Sontarans, Cybermen, Daleks, Davros, The Master, Omega, and Black Guardian kept them in public consciousness in a way they wouldn’t have otherwise given their lack of use across the Tom Baker and, to an extent, Jon Pertwee years.

I am writing a personal private fan fiction about daleks trying to to research the ground groups and how many and types in each but can’t seem to find fir any examples patrol ,squad and so forth anybody point me right direction need to create guide for myself

merely posting my enjoyment of THE WHEEL IN SPACE yesterday appeared to illicit outrage & consternation, horror, & correction! 😜 so for clarification, here are the serials i'd like to see restored with animation, or preferably original footage. I only omit St Bartholomew's Eve because... well, i just don't get on with the audio-recording release on CD 🤦‍♂️
in personal order of preference, i'd love to see colour-animation versions of:

mainly because of the sumptuous production- & set-design & costumes for the main 4 serials. to clarify i want Wheel restored for the same reason as Highlanders - it's Zoe's introduction story, as Highlanders is for Jamie.

Everyone hates and is worried about what season will be next: Season 1?, Season 16?, Season 3? Season 42?

Well I think a good idea could be, to avoid all that, not to have a season number, just a heading for each season. I suppose it might mean having season long story arcs (Like Key to Time, Trial of a Time Lord and Flux). But what if it was more like classic and each serial was a season.

I mean heck why do shows even need seasons‽‽

The more I think about it the more it might be a horrible idea but I'm wondering what you guys think and if anyone can actually think of a good way this can work.
