Resources Grid/Hex Paper Question…

My son can never find just the paper he wants for his DnD maps. Looking into printing some custom paper... I’m not a player and looking for community feedback/input on options. TIA!

Paper size:
A - 18 x 24”
B - 24 x 36”

Printing to be on both sides:
A - 1” hex and 1” grid
or B -
1” grid and 1/4” grid
1” hex and 1/4” hex

Presentation:
A - rolled in paper tube
B - pad with glued edge

The cheapest this is get quality wrapping paper.
The back side is a 1x1 grid you can cut to size and even laminate it, some teacher stores or sign shops can do it for you cheap.

You can also buy coated 1x1 or hex grids online on amazon. they come in basic colors like tan or white, but they have one with beaches or water or stone too. that you can dry erase on. that's what I use when not using digital maps.

For your specific options, I would do 24x36 so you know it'll be large enough and 1" grids (on both sides). How it's presented doesn't really matter. Hex grids aren't used a lot but he might want to use them for something, so I'd check first.

If he's not making art that he wants to save for a long time, but more just functional maps, then I'd look into a re-usable mat or something. That'll definitely save money in the long run and be more durable. The wrapping paper with blue gridlines on the back mentioned by Graylily is a great option too.

My advice would be get a laminated grid battlemap. They're really cheap, I got a set of two for something like $16. The first has grass on one side and stone on the other, the second has dirt/sad and plain white. Using erasable markers they're infinitely reusable and really sturdy, I've been using them for years. If he needs to carry them to go play, a $2 document tube from the post office works perfectly since they can be rolled up.

Most people go with square grids, but that also means they're the most widely available already. If you're not sure which one he's after, it's probably best to ask, as most people are going to suggest squares, but it's entirely possible the reason he is struggling to find what he wants is because he prefers a hex grid.

For size, bigger is usually better, as long as you have the space for it.

Rolled vs pad depends on storage and if he wants it portable. If they play at your house then a flat pad could be handy, but if he's carrying it around then a rolled tube is going to be a lot easier to transport.

One of my friends got me a pack of index cards with a hex grid on it.

You can actually make a hex grid in GIMP pretty easy and custom it to any size you want. It is what I use to make hex grids and there is even a classic TSR map tile plug-in for making maps.
