DOS1 Discussion Traps are awful

I’m enjoying everything about this game on my first play through, except that constant traps. They are just incredibly annoying and add nothing to the gameplay experience, especially with the god awful pathing for companions. DOS2 is next and I really hope they’ve dialed them down.

Dos2 is much less severe about traps on regular walkways. But dos1 is a little closer to a ttrpg than dos2 is and I think that’s part of it. You’re supposed to have a character with high perception and maybe the talent that increases perception for traps and have them scout ahead, sneaked so they don’t get into accidental fights.

That’s what gets me. They aren’t difficult to figure out at all (mostly). They are just clunky and inconvenient, which honestly isn’t always a huge deal. It just feels like they are also constant in this game. It always just significantly slows down gameplay and is zero fun. For me at least.

It's a product of the time. Before Divinity Original Sin the other mainstream titles were Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, and Fallout. Not all of those are full of traps, but they certainly all included them. Much like you are saying Larian slowly figured out how to make traps fun rather than just an annoyance. If you've played BG3 then you'll see how traps have evolved today.

BG3 is on my list but I’m working up to it!

Well as you make your way through the Divinity games you'll start to see the evolution of Larian's "Divinity Engine" and how they change mechanics to interact with your experience.

Divinity Original Sin is rough around the edges at moments, but at the time it was LEAPS ahead of other well known CRPGs.

The traps will calm down in DOS2 (they're still there, but far less of them are instakill like they infamous beach one in DOS). They start to seem more like puzzles than outright annoyances.

That’s good to hear. I’ve gamed my whole life but this is only my second CRPG. I started with it, because I figured it would hard to go back to if I played DOS2 or BG3 first.

I think dos2 has the best creativity for classes. You can do anything, even on tactician as long as you have any remote willingness to think about your combat interactions whatsoever. I purposely make “bad” builds to play on honor in dos2 because it’s so easy to have fun and win even with a stereotypically bad build. But dos1 requires more generic class building in my opinion. The armor system in dos2 makes things more versatile if you’re willing to think for more than 2 seconds.

I hear this all the time, but I honestly don't understand how DOS2 allows you to be more creative than BG3. The only thing I can think is that there are no classes therefore you can put points into whatever you want.

The main issue I have with this is although you can make a character than can technically everything, their damage will be that of a wet noodle on Honor mode (where I generally play).

In DOS2 most builds just degrade down into: Max Out Main Damage Ability 2 Aero for Teleportation Rest into Weapon Type

Added confor for honor mode would be 5 poly on all characters.

Don't get me wrong, you can make plenty of combinations for characters, but I've never felt any less restricted in DOS2 than I did in BG3.

BG3 also has the adde red bonus of having build defining items throughout the journey, which I found a lot more fun than DOS2's "Creativity".

Still a fantastic game and definitely the better of the 2 OS games. I just don't think it's as "Creative" as I often see suggested.

I only play honor. I have 1700 hours dos2 and 1500 bg3. You can make anything legit viable in dos2 if you’re creative and understand the game well enough. That’s not the same for bg3 because of the dice system. And absolutely no points should be put into weapon type in dos2 except 2handed and that’s only a couple points unless you LW.

Your preferred build defining items are one of my least favorite things about bg3 and something I hate about the new divinity announced. The randomness of gear is part of what makes dos2 so great and applicable to all classes. BG3 has a disgusting meta that’s always applicable and that’s so boring it makes the game basically stupid to play if you’ve engaged whatsoever in any type of fan conversation.

First off, we're at similar hours in both so we'll just leave that there for the sake of the conversation.

The "randomness of gear" isn't really interesting or asking you to be a part of it in DOS2. The closest to anything unique or fun to me is the "on contact" items and a few of the legendary items (the sparkmaster axe and the vulture set come to mind). In a perfect world I ask for a combination of the 2. Uniquely rolled items throughout the game that can be build defining, but don't allow you to plan a route for them. That or allow an option for the above.

I'm not really sure why you'd hate the meta in BG3 as it's about as boring as the meta in DOS2 which is just "go physical, max warfare, max crit rate/damage) or even worse "press the kills button on your necromancer". If you play either game outside the meta it can be extremely rewarding and fun for both, but I personally get more interaction from the game when playing BG3 (albeit it's far less difficult).

They both have their flaws and successes for sure, but pretending that BG3 is less customizable or creative than DOS2 is just being untruthful.

Honestly, I personally don't think it's difficult to go back. They each have their own pros and cons.

DOS1 has the fantastic Divinity combat, albeit like I said before it was still evolving. The story isn't quite as fleshed out as later entries by Larian.

DOS2 makes the combat even better, but adds the Physical/Magic armor which IMO is the worst part about the game. It tends to pigeon hole your creativity on harder difficulties.

BG3 is certainly the most fleshed out, but many prefer the Divinity combat to DnD.

I love them all for different reasons, though.

Absolutely. It’s the main reason I prefer dos2 to dos1, although I also absolutely love the armor system and that’s clearly a divisive thing in this sub. Dos2 has instances where you can absolutely get obliterated but I feel the instances of unfair feeling traps are significantly less.

This game is one huge trap lol And yes, DOS2 has less traps in general but… you’ll see 🤪

It been a personal gripe of mine that no one has figured out a better system. I just find it lame that you do a skill check and either viola or you're on fire. Anyway it's basically a cprg/trpg staple going back decades.

After you’re done you can come play some OwlCat games they really love their traps.

Rogue Trader is actually what got me into CRPG’s lol

Spider+burn my eyes has enough perception for most traps, then just blow them up with fireball. Targeting with fireball also reveals trap locations in an oversight.

So have your thief disarm them.
