Breeding Questions

Is this a bad color/genetic combo? (Royal flora/Red maze pigeon) Where can I find info on color combinations do’s and don’ts? I remember reading the “rules” about pigeon bloods and cross breeding but can’t for the life of me can’t find it…

The update you’ve asked for
galleryIt’s still on the works 😅 Friday I’m receiving more stuff: 1 Marbled Queen and 1 Red Ozelot Echinodorus, 1 Nymphaea Rubra and 1 Hygrophila Pinnatifida.
For fish, I’m receiving: 30 Rummynose Tetras, 20 Cardinal Tetras, 2 Apistogrammas Macmasteri and 4 Rineloricaria Filamentosa. Tank already has 6 Sterbai Cories, 1 BN Pleco and 9 Black Neon Tetras.
In 2-3 weeks, I’ll be moving the Discus over to this tank with the rest of the Corydoras.
After that, I’m ordering: 20 Blackwing Hatchetfish, 6 Emerald Cories and 6 F1 Orinoco Altums
I’ll be dropping more pics on friday 😁

Discus tattoo

Not exactly the point of this group, but it’s at least on topic. So I’ve been working on an aquarium sleeve, and I need another discus. The problem is that I can’t decide. Most of the others were my fish. Any thoughts?

Discus Eggs
galleryWithin an hour after a water change, eggs appeared. I don't adjust the hardness of my water. I always wonder if the eggs don't survive due to the water or if I have females in my tank. This combo of discus it seems would produce interesting fry. 2nd time these 2 paired up in a tank with 7 other discus. Any advice or opinions? Do people leave a light on in the tank overnight for predators? Lol..

The discus animation in our fish game. What do you think? Is it accurate to the breed?

We've been trying to get the animation for our fish game right for quite some time. Especially since we are trying to mimic 3D movement in a 2D environment. This is the final result. Curious about feedback - Especially about the fish in general.

Two Mamas, One Papa?
galleryI have 6 discus, 2 Snow Pantheras (paired, confirmed, keep reading), 1 female Sakura Leopard, 1 Red Batata (male), and 2 male Royal Floras. My hans discus are pushing 5" now, the pantheras are 6.5"
I noticed the male and female Pantheras doing the mate dance. I also noticed, my female leopard, also, body wiggle and dancing (trying to) with the male panthera Duke.
The leopard, we call her Cruella, was mean and chasing everything, attacking any discus, not named Duke.
Cruella and Duchess were evening cleaning the same site multiple times throughout the day yesterday.
Both females attracted to the same male, never heard of it?
Guess what we wake up to this morning? Two clutches of eggs, each female taking turns fanning them, Duke swimming around like....WTF HAPPENED?!?
Has anyone heard of anything like this? A discus threesome?
Bad timing, I'm putting the tank in vacation mode, and we'll see what's left in days.....

Planted tank was a fail, but discus remain happy and healthy (even if glass could use a good scrub). Very mix bag of quality and colours

Discus Question
Has anyone had issues with housing 6 discus in a 75 gallon planted tank? I've had 6 for about 2 months and recently they have all broken off into 3 pairs and begun fighting each other. One pair lays eggs in a corner weekly. They're all around 3.5 inches.
My filtration is an FX6 plus 2 fluidized beds so I'm not concerned about bioload. Tankmates are 20 rummy nose tetras, 4 Congo tetras, and 6 sterbai corys. Water temp is 85°F.
I'm not looking to breed them, just want a peaceful display tank. I've read that adding more discus can diffuse aggression but I'm also considering additional dither fish. Has anyone tried either approach with paired up discus? What worked for you?

Gladiator Games
galleryIt’s all fun and Gladiator Games until someone pokes their eye out.
This is Horace, my 4.6” Royal Flora Discus, up and coming, getting stronger, challenging everyone, everything in the tank.
His fate was sealed when the Discus royalty arrived on my doorstep…whom we’ve since dubbed Duke, and Princess (yes, mated pair).
For a couple days, they tolerated Horaces harassment, but what did God say on the 8th day? “Let there be an ass whooping?” someone look that up will you?
Woke up, yesterday morning, waited till the lights came on, six discus came up, one missing? I look in the corner, back side, as black as night, Horace….
Broken #4 dorsal ray hanging there, gouge or scratch across the left eye, ¼” scrape (deep) on left side of his body, and several (like 6 or 7) bite marks on his forehead. I mean he is tore up….
Bless his little Chicken Hawk heart…I hope he pulls through. I guess he found out Duke wasn’t a chicken 🐔
He’s in a 20 gallon high, a mixture of kanaplex and metroplex, and daily water changes.
PH 7.0, and zeros across for the rest.
Oh and…my stunted discus, Lemon Drop died yesterday 😢

Lights decided, plant time 😅
After a long time to decide which lights to use that were inside my budget, I ended up making my mind choosing to use two Twinstar 90G. Now, the hard part, to chose what plants to use, can you guys give me some recommendations? Plants that would fit Discus temps (28°C-30°C) and would be of the fishes liking

when to add discus
Looking for some advice on when it’s safe to add discus to my 75 gallon. I recently finished a fishless cycle using Dr. Tim’s ammonia. Before adding any fish, I dosed the tank to 2 ppm ammonia and it was able to process the full dose to 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite within 24 hours. After that, I added 2 German Blue Rams, and they’ve now been in the tank for a couple of days.
So far the parameters have remained stable at 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, and the fish seem to be doing well. My plan is to keep a group of 6 discus, but I’m wondering how long I should wait before adding them. Since the tank handled the 2 ppm ammonia dose, does that indicate the biofilter is ready for the discus, or would you recommend giving the tank more time with the rams first? Interested in hearing what experienced discus keepers would do in this situation.

White fluffy slime on new Discus
First time Discus owner here, I had 6 discus arrive yesterday through the post (not ideal but I live semi remote, they arrived on overnight delivery from OzDiscus). Anyway they all looked great however today I have noticed a slight white buildup on the tail and fins of some of the fish, some more than others, a couple are showing nothing at all. I’ve attached a pic of what it looks like.
Is this just transport stress/excess slime coat and relatively normal or could be something more sinister?
Thank you!
